The Devadasi system has been a part of India’s culture for a longer period now. Once a position of nobility, has now turned into a mere act of prostitution to which many lower caste women fall prey every year. They begin their journey as a devadasi in a temple, but end up in the brothels of cities like Mumbai and Kolkata.

This is soo heart breaking to know that the system which as HIGHLY honorable, was dedicated to art, culture and women considered nearly a goddess during ancient times will damage to such extent during 19th century bec of invaders, temple breaking and no funds that they will be called as prostitutes! Those who used to be soo literate, rich, highly talented and powerful will become complete opposite of that. Really these invaders have caused MUCH damage to culture and art than we think!! I once work closely with devdasis who were brought to goa baina beach. It breaks my heart to hear their stories on how they were offered to yellamma and how pimps convince their parents by offering few thousands. Once they reach goa its the politician's and law holder who exploits them first. May this never happen to other daughters. Being a woman myself i was not able to work professionally. If gods are there...i do hope they will bring changes.

I cannot fathom why God needs entertainment from us. In the Gita, Lord Govinda clearly said that He is satisfied even if someone offers Him a small leaf (Tulasi). It's all about devotion and love for God. Then why do we need the Devdasi system? Yes, if women take their own decision on becoming Devdasis, that's fine but why force them from their childhood?

Agreed The real meaning gets lost and systems become corrupted because the society stops studying its own religion. Our culture evolves with time which is both good and bad. Good because beliefs remain acceptable to the society and Bad because , if we don't keep an eye on it , some people may start corrupting the culture to best suit their own agendas or benefits. This similar thing happened to our culture and to stop this we have to make sure that we and our children, study our culture and remain relevant with it so that these malpractices can never become norms in our society.

May be some states having these issues, I already reserch about this case. But in odisha it's very different. As Devdasi of Lord Jaganath, they are respected as Godess Maa Laxmi. They used to dance in odishi, and sing Gita Govind. So we are worshiping like Godess.

This video didnt cover many things as well. It missed many other musical maestros of India who learnt music dance etc in ancient times thru devdasi culture. Balasaraswati, Subalaxmi to name a few. Its also a misinformation that devdasi cant marry. Doordarshan aired a documentary long back which showed many dvdasis got married to noble men of society as well and also sometime the musicians who performed with them in temple. Temple demolition and abrahamic rulers made them change their song and dance from religious kirtan to romantic sensual ras filled rendition bcoz kirtans were connected to idolators which abrahamics were dead against with. Dhrupad song history gives us a good idea about how music changed from bhaktigiti to mujra in mughal court for musicians who survived by presenting their arts.

I am an Indian classical dancer, and I have a question for you. According to whatever research you are showing about active devdasis, are they practicing classical dance??? Not at all. How come they are still devdasis? Whatever ritual they are following have turned into prostitution. Remember that, indian classical music is more than science, and foreigners understood this so deep, that they have put so much efforts to destroy the image of classical music & dance. And bollywood has played a vital role to continue the invaders' plans, cz classical music is still not much accepted by the people. Blaming God for this ritual is same as people offering 'Bali pratha' in which they themselves have greed to eat the meat later.

In Puri Jagannath Tample the devdashi were called as Mahari(Mahan Nari) . They use to dance and sing before the gods at night and different occasions of the temple. There was a rule in Mahari system that Only girls born in upper caste form the age of 7 before they attain maturity should be given the status of Devdashi ... they were called as pila kanya(child bride).... Any random girl cant become a Devdashi to Jagannath

@@satyajitpatra6225 It wasn't stopped by any act but since the devdashi of puri temple then didn't adopted any girl child to continue the pratha after independence.... so the last surviving devdashi of lord jagannath devi Parashamani Mahari died in the year 2021 and the devdashi lineage vanished with her....In the 2015 Devi Sashimani mahari died who had actually performed the Mahari seva in the temple....These 2 were the last surviving Devdashi of Odisha🙏🏻

What this show's is how powerful ones belief system is. It can either uplift you if your aware enough to do so or it can make you and people associated with you a hell. It's so sad to hear the story of dev dasi. Very much similar, I heard the story of harijans. Which today in North India became a separate caste and facing the huge discrimination in the society. If anything can trouble shoot this problem is education and government support.

Devdasi system, in principle is very pious and sacred. In practice, due to Islamic invasions, British Invasions we were forced to change the definitions... Proper Education on what the Devdasi System is , how it is to be implemented... what are the perks of it, if a woman opts for it like Agnipath Scheme enables culture elevation. Mantra chanting enables the connect with God... system is not to be abolished because the practices are not good. Here, it is to be understood and implemented properly.

another devadasi account is that of the first vaishnava chera king,Kulshekhara Azhwar.It was said that his daughter,Ilai loved Lord Ranganatha(Vishnu,who is also called 'Azhagiya Manavalan',or the handsome groom)so deeply that The Azhwar arranged for her marriage to the deity.She is still worshipped to date.We cannot forget one of the famous female azhwar,Andal Nachiyar.She also married the same lord,and is believed to be the incarnation of Bhudevi,the earth goddess,who is an aspect of goddess Lakshmi.

Andal was not devadasi, she was a saint just like meerabai she used to sing prabandams on vishnu and dream hereself as wife of krishna just like meera. After it is said she merged into rangamannar(meaning dead("dead" term is not used on saints/gods in hinduism just like anno domini in christianity or saying reached vaikunta in Vaishnavism). Same goes to kulasekara azhwar daughter chera kulattu Valli. Even some male azhwars themselves imagined themselves as Gopis and sung divyaprabandam and are said to be merged with God. As they are somehow related to vishnu. In tamilnadu devadasis were the ones who excels in sadir(bharatam) and spent whole time in temples and forts with temples. Andal and cherakulathu Valli aren't dancers they are saints. Saints too dedicate their whole lives to the gods but they are not devadasis. Saints and devadasis are different eventhough both dedicate their lives to gods because devadasis follow orders of priest/dharmakarta of temples but saints are independent they don't follow any orders. devadasis were mainly temple dancers in India but saints were not.

All in all women are exploited by all over the globe by one means or another. 1. Women in Nazi Germany were Raped after Hitler was defeated and were shot in head. 2. In India the right to ancestral property for Hindu woman was allowed in 2005, many Hindu Scholars in Vedic period talked about the property of women, but no Hindu ruler, even before the invasion of Islam codified it and gave those rights to woman. So there are uncountable cases of inequality, violence and discrimination against women.

And, Hinduism gets the blame for denigrating women, who were treated as Goddesses when the Devdasis were initiated. I am sick of the adulteration of our civilization by Islam and Christianity. Do you know, the re-establishment of the Nalanda University after 815 years, is the new rumour Mullahs and Maulvis in West Bengal are spreading. They are telling their congregation that a Masjids was destroyed to build the university. Much worse than their previous rumour that the Brahmins had burnt it down.
