This is just about the only anime I’ve ever liked. No whiny teenage protags, no thirst traps, no magic or born heroes, no katanas cutting through solid stone. Just a man with good armor, a machine gun, and ptsd.

That’s not the final bit, though. The scene ends with the guy with the mustache lowering his gun, observing from afar. It shows even the other wolves didn’t know whether he’s a human. It’s all complicated by the fact that he very likely knew that he was being observed, and she was dead anyway, along with him if he spared her. This echoes the girl’s “what choice did I have?”

I think it is supposed to be ambiguous who actually shoots her. We don't see a muzzle flash, only hear the shot. There is no blood so we can't tell where the shot came from. Even at the end of the story the viewer doesn't know whether he is a wolf or not.

What really got me were the little details in that final.. well.. massacre. Like how even though the agents were there to kill Fusei he'd still only shoot after they shot first and it'd be a quick "precise" (by MG42 standards) burst to the chest, then when he reaches his friend that betrays him instead of a quick burst he just about empties a whole belt into him. Or how the music during the whole thing would sound more and more desperate after each guy was gunned down. Thing was a work of art I'd say.

Thank you for explaining the plot in a way that kind of makes sense. The first time I watched Jin Roh, I couldn't understand why different police departments are shooting at each other because of an accident in the sewers. It's worth mentioning that Japan has a history of a very intense inter-service rivalry between the navy and the army where they refused to help each other while squabbling for resources. Staging an incident to frame the other is not out of the question.

@@georgyekimov4577This remids me about a book "Aquarium" by traitor Suvorov. One of his first missions was to travel unseen and write something weird on a school wall to make another Intelligence Agency look bad. It also reminds me of how Adolf Hitler run things. He had multiple organizations doing roughly the same thing (army and Waffen SS; Gestapo, SS and police), so that no one could consolidate enough power to threaten him and his underlings would fight for his favor and priority access to resources. The regional governors could meet at most 4 at a time and were banned from having a big conference. In I, Claudius, a big problem for Emperors and the Senate was that the man in charge of Praetorian Guard had 4000 overpaid veterans under his command and that was enough to be a de facto shadow ruler. The only way to oust him was to corrupt his second in command into arresting him, but the problem remained. Eventually an Emperor abolished the Praetorians and had a much smaller and more specialized Palatial Guard, while City Garrison was a separate organization and it solved the problem. Finally, even modern Democracy is all about checks and balances and separation of powers and the organizations fight for influence, but cooperate too.

Lots of really good anime stories have metaphorical undertones. These are often used in literature to send coded information to the reader without the author being arrested, or it can be used as an Easter egg. For those with short-attention-span disorder, it can seem tedious, but then a gourmet meal can seem tedious to someone who just wants to scarf down a Big Mac and some fries.

The Red Riding Hood stuff is actually very integral to what the movie is about. It's meant to show a distinct difference between how stories are usually told and how things actually go. You have RRH who's the good side and the wolf as the bad side in the book. In Jin-Roh, both RRH and the wolf are the good guy and both of them are the bad guy. Life isn't like a story, even less so a fairy tale. Sometimes there are no happy endings and good and evil are always a matter of perspective. That's why the movie concludes with the fairy tale book lying in a dirty puddle at the end.

Important comment. Jin-Roh is less of a fantasy than using real world psychological principles to great effect. There is no good or bad, black or white, it's all grey and *everyone* is struggling. That's especially true for its rather realistically crafted political scenario. It fits very well into the "alternative history" genre, more than most sci-fi and fantasy.

I watched JinRoh a few times...and the reason the characters are shallow is because...thats how war is. Thats how conflict turns everyone involved, from the middle managers to the individual warriors. Everyone's emotions stop mattering. Do you really know the bros you deploy with when they dont have the uniform on? No, not really. Do you know who your killing? No. Does the organization you serve care who you are? No. Do they really care who your killing? Unless they are a key mover in a tactically/ strategically important area, No. You, the individual warrior, go into survival mode and you shove your emotions deep down until later...much later. Because conflict is literally a factory of death and destruction aimed at bending the will of the opposing sides of whatever organization you happen to be a part of. As the individual warrior, these people you are killing and getting killed by are not your personal enemies. You don't know them and they don't know you, and its just a huge train wreck of individuals being lead by individuals and those leading individuals being lead by others until there is an "Us" vs "Them". JinRoh is an exploration on how conflict turns everyone into numbers, cogs, and parts in the meat grinder that is war. It is about how noone actually fighting in the conflict actually matters individually to the conflict. Noone actively fighting in the conflict knows why they are actually killing that other person in the conflict besides that that person is on the "other" side. Its an exploration on how there are people who write the orders and there are people who do the orders and those two people live generally different lives. Its an action packed, anti war film. Because in real conflict EVERYONE is mentally and emotionally destroyed. Once you know what you know, you cant unknow it. Also, the metaphor for red riding hood is the wolf is any organization that uses people for their own aim, and they act like they are your friends, family, etc. to engender you to use everything you are and could become to their ends but really they will eat you up and spit you out and find another in a heart beat.

I know this anime, and damn did i love it! the constant thrill of "who outplays who", that "odd" but special "love"-relationship... and also especially the artstyle, the amounts of detail the animators brought into this one was so astonishing, seeing all these german weapons, vehicles, "armor" included... i was and still am amazed

Anime does not deserve to be compared to Mamoru Oshii's masterpieces. Ghost in the Shell, Patlabor 1 and 2, Jin-Roh, Angel's Egg, etc. Are incredible movies period. Not just anime, not just animated movies, not just Japanese movies... They're incredible movies. Whoever has any interest in science fiction or animation needs to watch them.

Jin Roh started as a live action movies adaptation of a book I believe.
@boi1133

@@mozambiquehere5903 It took inspiration from the first chapter of the manga 'Kerberos Panzer Cops' which is set in the same universe and was released after The Red Spectacles. Oshii had written that. But Jin-Roh is far more complex than this one chapter of the manga. I guess it's a result of Jin-Roh being at first a 6 episode OVA adaptation of the manga.

4:52 this also happens in air gear, where they say something and make it the whole entire idea. like naruto and wanting to be hokage, but worse. In Air Gear one character will create a metaphor in their mind and somehow the whole fucking cast knows it too. Example, the side character, Kazu, has a moment were he realizes he often hides behind the sidelines and attacks when no one notices. His metaphor for this is "If I wait for the person to unlock their front door, I will sneak behind them to get in" THIS IS ALL IN HIS HEAD BTW. He makes a point (in his head) that he shouldn't wait anymore and should budge open. All of a sudden his opponent Nike fucking dares him to open his door. (Something like that I haven't read air gear in a while). And this metaphor goes on for fucking EVERRRRRRRRR. ANOTHER EXAMPLE! Ikki, main character, explains that using air trecks (Electric rollerblades) feels like being a bird spreading their wings and that the world is his sky or something like that (This comment he made to himself) AND NOW EVERYONE IN THE MANGA WONT SHUT UP ABOUT IT. BIRD THIS BIRD THAT OH LOOK AT ME I'M IN THE FUCKING SKYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY I BELIEVE I CAN FLY, I BELIEVE I CAN TOUCH THE SKY - (Jontron) Honestly Air Gear has some bad moments, the main villain doesn't even make sense. But does that mean Air Gear is terrible? No. Air Gear is an Anime/Manga to turn your brain off to, it's art and character designs are interesting and the fight scenes are so fun to watch/look at. But sometimes I wish it wasn't an ecchi, serious moments can get hard to get into or taken seriously because some girl has her tits bouncing n shit. Oh and one last thing Onigiri has to be the absolute worst character that makes me feel so uncomfortable. You can watch some of the episodes on youtube but the rest is on hulu and Kindle has the manga. Sorry for the rant, this video is about Jin Roh, not Air Gear

Don't forget the Red Spectacles, it's prequel, Stray Dog: Kerberos Panzer Cop, and Jin Roh is it's prequel. Jin Roh was also remade as a live action movie, set in Korea this time (Illang: The Wolf Brigade, aka Inrang). The first two are quite surrealistic, and not as violent as you might expect. All in all, a beautiful sequence of stories.

Among movies like howl's moving castle and a bunch of other studio ghibli animated movies this was one of them and man did this bring me back. This is my number one Anime movie, "Jin-Roh: The Wolf Brigade Stands Alone" even compare to its origin manga and to its live action movie adaptations because it is the continuity of centuries of old fairy-tale tradition at its best... You cannot simply read the original Brothers Grimm's Little Red Riding Hood to children just because of its brutality as you cannot watch Hiroyuki Okiura's Jin-Roh just for its brutality... it is indeed a masterpiece! Click bait title or not, I don't agree with "...Nobody Knows About", it inspired video games, movies and remakes like Netflix's "Illang: The Wolf Brigade" (2018) and its Korean, its not that good but it still shows Jin-Roh is popular, maybe not popular as Akira but still known very well imo...
