You mentioned the length of the Manga. It's humongous and has some real depth and the antithesis of Shonen Bullcrap that was already present at the time. Akira is one of the few "read the effin manga first otherwise you'll be sol" anime masterpieces that justifies reading the manga before and after.

Before I watched Akira my buddy told me that it's pretty easy to follow in the beginning but to comprehend the latter half of the film I'd probably require some adderall washed down with McDonald's Sprite, to this day that is the second most accurate description of watching an anime I've heard

I saw this on acid I was definitely one of the craziest experiences. I have seen the movie a few times before that but on acid was on a whole nother level considering the way the animation was done that's what really got me.

My dad put me on Anime even tho he doesn’t look the type. This and Fist of the North Star, Cowboy Bebop etc was ALWAYS playing bro and I’m so thankful I got to grow up the way I did. The beauty of older anime is that sensation of a wild wild west of themes and stories...like Akira..but the downside of some of the old series are the incomplete stories and concepts.

You should read the manga brotha, the movie was great but holy shit, you’re in for a trip with the manga, that shit gets cranked to a million! Story wise it is so much better than the movie. Katsuhiro Otomo announced a few years ago that there was a modern Akira anime in the worlds that would be made by sunrise. Hopefully they release it.

The protagonist of that use Kai who you showed wasn’t bad after all It has a complex story about being bullied and being so insecure about your body, that guy didn’t even exit from his own room when his parent’s died. And when i got reincarnated in another body , in rare occasions his mind projected his souls as his real naked body. The grown up version, and he was disgusted from his body because he has only bad memories about that

if you loved this movie, you GOTTA read the manga. it improves on literally everything the movie does well, and stretches and fleshes it out from 2 hours to 2500 pages. GOOD GOD its a masterpiece

How can anyone think the Akira soundtrack is 'forgettable'? Made me question reviewers worth and doubt the relevance of every other part of his criticism, even though I agreed with most of it, the convoluted story compressed from a hefty manga, the dissappearing side characters etc. To me, it's up there with the Blade Runner soundtrack.

Maybe it is due to your age but you seem to only be able to judge the movie from your point of view and only a limited view at that. The cultural significance of this movie is huge. Anime would not be what it is today if it wasn't for Akira. At least in the USA. (in germany we had successfull anime since the 70s.. altough they werent advertised as such) Comparing anime can be a lot like comparing a good book with a comic strip on your daily newspaper... and this is the one great book that made me start reading books. (or rather specific books.. what made me start looking for anime was "Nadia - The secret of blue water" in the 90s
