If you go to his LinkedIn profile he still works at Guerrilla Games as narrative director. He was lead writer when he joined the team in Sep 2013 all up to July 2016 when he was promoted to narrative director. The project grew bigger so they had to have more positions. Ben McCow joined as lead writer in the same year they have showed off a gameplay demo at E3 2016. They delayed the game to 2017 because the feedbacks got them to hire more people as they ended up with 277 people at GG when the game was shipped.

I love the story, sure, we've heard all the stories where the machines takes over i.e. Terminator but this one caught me off guard. Especially with Project Zero Dawn. Man, what a beautiful game. I can't wait to jump back into it's world again, maybe we can fly or glide at least in the next outing.

I think it's exactly because we've all heard those kinds of stories of man versus machine that made HZD's twist on it so outstanding. The story really went under my skin when I played it the first time with how well it's presented. It was haunting.

@@synisterv7703 HZD is something special. It was more profound than being just a terminator clone. The way they revealed everything and the implications for Aloy just stunned me. I had no idea about Zero Dawn going in, but the title made perfect sense when you find out. The meaning of "Zero Dawn" in the title actually lured you in even before playing the game. The title felt a little odd, but getting the presentation down in the bunker blew my mind. I can't think of any game, movie or series that carry such a big secret under the hood. Amazing experience.

Fantastic interview! That was cathartic to her his thoughts. After all the time I spent in ZD, I was so surprised to hear my friends and favorite gaming websites so quiet on the storyline in the game. The uncovering of the mystery that is the Zero Dawn project was one of the most satisfying and existentially scary experiences I have ever had in a game. I have never had a game that made me think so much about "Holy hell, what if this actually happened?!" I think if it were today's societies, not only do we not have the knowledge and tech yet, but just based on international relationships, would never happen. This game still has me thinking about the implications, and how clever it was in its delivery. Never had so many Holy Shit moments in a game's story. Went for killing robot dinosaurs, came away in emotional shock.

Its no secret that video games have largely outpaced film in production values, budgets, profits, and talent. A game can cost 10x as much as a film, and make 10x as much. There’s no doubt about it, the ‘better than average” video games are more widely enjoyed and of a higher overall quality than the vast majority of films nowadays.

Games can also have any number of hours, up to hundreds of them if the dev wants, where a big budget film will have 3 hours tops (or 4 hours if it's a Director's Cut on streaming apparently). Games can spend essentially as much time as they want building out the story, world, and characters.

Awesome work Danny. A really awesome story is of how the Yakuza series came to be made.Toshihiro Nagoshi staked his career on it and risked the future of Sega, the game was wildly ambitious, they went through two major budget increases, and also decided to go against accepted wisdom and doubled down on being Japanese and aiming for the Japanese market all the while staunchly insisting that the game would be for adults at the time where gaming was still seen as for kids. Yakuza was also a very taboo topic for the Japanese, yet against all the odds the game was a success. You also have the interesting story about how badly they botched the localization for the West when they dubbed with mafia sounding voices, but on this generation they turned it around. You should be in a position to tell this story as I'm sure your final fantasy doc has opened a lot of doors in Japan and Sega should be keen for the publicity close to the Western release of Yakuza 6. Thanks for reading this. I'd love for you to tell this story because I know you have the talent to do it

@@ScreamScreamer702 - I've played both through and through, and I feel that Horizon is a much more unique experience. BOTW is fantastic, no doubt, but I think Horizon is superior in many key areas. Firstly, how immersive Horizon's world is. You really feel like you’re a part of this massive, culturally diverse world, full of mysterious history, with each conversation being unique and deep, which is largely thanks to John Gonzalez. BOTW, not so much. Conversations felt forced and awkward. Secondly, the lush and beautiful environment; which is aided by Horizon’s powerful engine, is graphically realistic and less "cartoony" as is BOTW, which isn’t as visually appealing for open world. Moreover, BOTW combat is definitely sub-par compared to Horizon, especially the controls and enemy design. To me, it’s not even a competition, really. The scale, the details, the creativity, which these interviews highlight, all amazing. Such a unique and ambitious project. Guerrilla Games deserved game of the year for Horizon. Hands down.

I'd like to echo others here in thanking you for this enlightening interview! When I bought this game it was more for the general aesthetic, as the concept of pre-industrial tribe-like people combating highly advanced robotic animals was an interesting and unique hook. What I didn't expect was an amazing story that could have very well been conceived by Asimov or Clarke that would take the gamer through such an existential journey. I was completely entranced every time I would read/hear the journals recorded by people who were facing the end of the world knowing full well there was nothing they could do to stop it and showing the many ways people would process that literal end of all things. I'm also happy there were a few minutes dedicated to discussing the 'Happy birthday, Issac' scene, and that was the moment I knew I was absolutely hooked on the game. Bravo to Mr. Gonzalez on his terrific work on Horizon, and bravo to Noclip for bringing his voice to us!

It's amazing storytelling where the little bit of set up before the Proving is able to well define Rost and Aloy's relationship. Note: About 0.5% of Aloy's DNA is not Sobeck's. This is huge (1.5% change can make you into a chimpanzee) so she has been "souped-up" by GAIA to enhance her physical strength, endurance, and ability to heal and otherwise respond to various potions and take punishment more than a typical person can. The equivalent of adding Batman physical ability on top of her "clone mother's" super-intelligence -- even Sylens is shocked by her understanding of things that others would think as just "will of God". This is the only thing that allows her even a single hope to do here geas as given her by GAIA: Save the entire world, literally.

This dude is a genius. The story of these games is phenomenal. Every single thing makes every aspect of the game believable.

I must have come back to watch this interview at least 3 or 4 times. John Gonzalez's process of how he transformed the narrative of Horizon Zero Dawn into something that was "both deeply personal and hugely epic" doesn't just make for an entertaining story, it's GREAT advice for any aspiring writer of fiction. Often times, many protagonists can feel completely ancillary to the main thrust of the story, and while they might be fun to watch, you don't really feel any personal stake in their success or failure. John's treatment of Aloy as "exactly the character you want to play" in the world of Horizon, whose primary drive was deeply intertwined with the mysteries of the world, was by contrast both engaging and immensely satisfying to see pay off. He took what seems from the outset to be a ridiculous concept and made it one of the best science fiction stories I've experienced in the last few years. Sad to see him leave Guerrilla, but I can't wait to see what he's done with Forbidden West!

There needs to be an expansion where David Attenborough narrates over the machines in their natural habitats i would definitely pay for that.

@Noclip, please do a documentary about Larian Studios, the makers of Divinity: Original Sin 1 and 2, 2 being considered by many the best RPG ever created. Their games are massive and incredible detailed and complex. Plus the games were funded through Kickstarter. Perfect subject for one of your documentaries!

I have only just started but Im totally engrossed in it and the company. Have been binging their Kickstarter update videos on their channel. Amazing how much they cram into the game with so few people in comparison to the big companies that have much less in their games.

I couldn't believe how much I enjoyed the story if this game. It's not often that I'm genuinely invested in the backstory and lore. Really curious to see how Guerilla takes this further in the sequel.
