That shortcut to the maintenance yard is going to be really handy! When BRR was first added, there was a much easier way through the same area that dropped out in the same place and I used it all the time. It's great to know it's still possible. I use that route over the fence constantly and the way I drop down is to just drop from the top of the fence, same as at the dam.

It's much safer the way I did it here. In the Frankie series I did it a way where you have to walk along an outside edge briefly and you have to be careful not to miss a climb or you'll fall. But yeah pretty handy during an aurora/wind or if you don't want to spend a match on the wolves.

1:45:02 They put in a locked door that needs a pry bar. Therefore, there are about *five* pry bars in this area. I don't quite understand what the point of the locked door was to begin with if they felt the need to make it that easy to get open.😂

Yeah, I knew about the one in the tunnel and the one that's always just on the other side. The others are a bit overkill.. I thought the same thing, it's like if they put a prybar in front of both doors of the Orca and then one in each nearby car for good measure :P For the top maybe they were worried about someone taking the shortcut and then getting stuck up there due to broken ribs... that explains putting a prybar for the return trip but doesn't really explain the others.

To my knowledge, wounded bears won't wait forever at the fire. You probably took too long there which triggered the bear to charge again. Back when I was still using the campfire strat on bears (now bear dance all the way), if I'm in a cave like this, I trigger the bear's charge (by walking closer and NOT shooting at it) -> headshot while behind the fire -> pass time immediately when the bear flees, and the bear will bleed out very close to the cave. I never got mauled by doing that. It's super cheesy but the campfire strat is already cheesy in the first place anyway, so whatever comes after that doesn't matter :P

I have waited bears out like this multiple times in the past. It's comical, they just stand there and bleed out until they keel over. However, as we can see it's not 100% (or it was bugged here which amounts to the same thing.) I've done your strategy before which also works, although I'll usually shoot it once while it charges, and then again while it's halted at the fire to trigger the flee. That gives an extra chance at dropping the bear immediately. Bears are so buggy though, sometimes they just go on a random rampage. I was doing something similar on Mystery Lake and the bear went hulk mode and ignored all obstacles, including phasing right through a fishing hut that was between us like it didn't even exist :D

@ArchimedesLP Interesting, it's been quite some time since I last used this strat so things are a little fuzzy. I noticed the sprain risk popped up right before the bear decided to charge again. Could that be the reason?

@@gotmilkanot Wow interesting thought. Definitely seems plausible, since we know that has an effect on other animal behavior. I also did some quick testing on a Voyageur save(before reading your latest comment) and the method isn't as clean as I remember it. Sometimes the bear will start to charge again, but then pause again closer to the fire as long as I stay close to the fire and keep it between us. And sometimes it will stand there for a very long time and then randomly flee for no apparent reason. Whatever the case, I'll have to stop using this method. On the Frankie series I started using a method where I start the fire quite far away and then double-headshot the bear before it reaches the fire. If it's not dead by then, the third shot drops it. That's what I should have started doing here as soon as I had more than 1-2 arrows...

@ArchimedesLP Yeah, I had a hard time luring wolves into an open cave in my PONE run because they kept losing aggro at the cave entrance. This is new-ish behaviour AFAIK and I wouldn't be surprised if they messed up the code for bears too.

AFAIK since recently bears won`t stare at you when by the fire for long. So he kinda panicked and started running, but that stiff cave space played a bad joke on you. Were you able to like dance and keep fire between each other all the time (which of course was close to impossible) the bear would`ve run and than walk until dead. Same would`ve happened if in open or probably if the fire was at the very cave entrance.

I did some more testing and apparently now they can start charging and then stop again as long as you keep the fire between. But yeah it's clearly way too risky to mess around with these days. Either keep shooting to kill/scare or use inside/cars/unreachable terrain.

oh that was so bad haha. when the bear was at the head of the cave and you weren't shooting, i was saying outloud "just SHOOT him!". but i also agree, when rewatching the clip, that it looks like a bug. he wasn't facing you, it kinda looked like bear dancing if a bit close to the bear, and suddenly you were in the animation. IMO, this very very possibly can be a bug. but the bears have always been buggy. I've reported bear bugs for as long as i've been playing TLD. there used to be a bear in TWM (it might still be there but i haven't encountered him in almost three years now where it used to spawn, and what a coincidence, he stopped roaming where he used to after i reported a series of bugs about that bear. i don't know if you can picture but when you're in deer clearing, you walk past three of the summit loot crates on your left and then go into a bottleneck that opens to the secluded shelf rope climb on your left and another rope climb on your right. well, a number of times, if the bear was roaming just below the secluded shelf rope and i aggroed it to stalk me, as i climbed the rope onto the shelf the bear would teleport from down below the climb and ONTO secluded shelf, where it would perform an instant animation attack as soon as i let go of the rope and stood on the shelf. One time, it did the teleporting, attacked me on the shelf, teleported back down as i recovered and patched my injuries, then teleported on the shelf once more and attacked me instantly a second time, ending the run right there. so yeah, that bear was stupidly buggy and it is not the only one by far. that's why i'm more than willing to see what happened to you as very strange behaviour. but at least it only touched the gloves and not the boots, easier to cure and repair rabbit clothing than deer clothing so there's that i guess.

Yeah I have mixed feelings on this. On the one hand it sucks to suddenly lose so much health after carefully preserving it for so long. On the other hand now that I've broken the streak I don't feel that I have to be quite so careful going forward :) This is not the first time I've seen buggy bear behavior relating to the "stopped at a fire" trick. Very rarely the bear can just start ignoring the fire like we see here. And of course it's easy for me to say in hindsight that I should have shot him again(since it should either drop him or cause him to flee) but even that action could have triggered a different bug and then I'd be saying the opposite("I should have just waited for him to bleed out!")

By the way I have to check again, but I'm pretty sure it wrecked all my (outer) clothes, pants and boots included. This is probably the most annoying part of the whole thing, since I just got all that stuff crafted. Later in the game I'd have cured ingredients lying around in several regions, and I wouldn't have to worry about failures as much with higher mending skill.

You're amazing when it comes to all the climbing, really really good but I notice for the rest of the gameplay you can be quite indecisive, that bear is an example you already ran to the fire for protection and had the bow in your hand and point blank range then suddenly it's like you are trying weigh some decision. Man that was bad move.

Maybe I was weighing a decision between shooting and not, but my understanding was that both options were 100% safe. Shooting the bear would cause it to flee which could cause it to be difficult to track down. Not shooting meant I had to wait for the bleedout but the bear would die right there. The bear "unfreezing" was a completely unexpected outcome that I wasn't prepared for.
