The main reason of better noise rejection in dynamic mics is... you should (and could) be closer to the capsule. Less sensitivity in dynamic mics = shorter distance = better signal to noise ratio (your voice will be much stronger than room sound); this is "the secret" of better noise rejection. If you speak from the same distance, it will be almost the same.
@feyvre
@feyvre 9 ай бұрын
you can get closer in the same way with a condenser microphone and lower the gain?
@SaintsPurgatory
@SaintsPurgatory 9 ай бұрын
In My opinion the "secret" is not proximity, "swallowing the mic". The elimination of background noise through room treatments and filters/plugins is the solution. Sitting on top of a mic does nothing to get rid of background noise, it's still there but not as in the face like your mic is. In recordings you will have to fix it to make it sound great. For on air creators, i.e. streamers that do not have a post recording to fix, you have to concentrate on solutions known to help audio before going "live", reducing noise best you can is the way to approach it.

SM-7B made the clicking less distracting, but that's because it's a darker mic. The high end on the other two mics is boosted so the high end of the clicking could be heard more clearly. As far as which rejects background noise better, they all sounded about the same volume wise, but the frequencies were slightly different is all.

I think people often overlook the polarpattern consistency of a mic. Some cardioid mics only have a cardioid pattern at 1khz and turn omni at the lows and hypercardioid in the 10khz and above region. Especially on drum mics with the cymbals in the back of the capsules these differences can be pretty drastic.

Type of microphone is less important than other factors such as frequency curve and polar pattern. The hints are pretty accurate, but in any scenario it’s best to get the microphone as close as possible and use breath and wind filters. Edit: for spoken word, processing to narrow the bandwidth is generally helpful, as well.

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU for a fresh breeze of sanity =) Seriously, I can’t count how many times I’ve tried to explain to people that background noise rejection is not really what separates dynamic from condenser mics. I’ve mixed in live scenarios in which a condenser mic was actually the better choice even though it DID pick up more stage bleed, because it had a much more neutral off axis sound than any dynamic option. But sadly, a lot of people rely on hearsay and don’t think about frequency dependent polar patterns that much.

mic type seems to have more bearing on the frequency spectrum of the background noise. darker sounding mics seem to make the keyboard clicking less distracting. I am using a Samson Mike C03 condenser suspended on a relescopic arm which is slightly above my sightline. also voicemeeter with moderate gate settings. I think 2 things can be distracting - to much high frequency content and overcompressing which will lead to a "breathy" environment. So when streaming (or doing video conferences), a low pass filter and a gate is always a good idea - much different requirements from a vocal performance in a Song production where we need maximum bandwidth and fix problems later.

Yes, dynamics are a popular choice for that. But it's more a function of the polar pattern and proximity to the source than the transducer itself.

It’s really refreshing hearing a company actually address this myth properly. Here’s another thing to consider.. a lot of noise also comes from the preamp and gain, especially with inexpensive interfaces, so using a gain-hungry mic like an SM7b may introduce MORE noise than an condenser. I did a video on this and people still argue it’s about “how you use them”, but I get right up on condenser mics all the time and they handle it just fine.

I once was very determined to investigate this belief. And I have even a-mailed Lewitt support and exchanged a few very meaningful e-mails. The concluiosn was that it is not a rule, but a correlation. Big diaphragm condensers have wider directionality in the lower frequencies. But small diaphragm are as good as dynamics. Another thing is the frequency response with less of high frequencies which may lead to a bit lower perception of reverb and space. There is also the case impact which is also usually different between dynamics and large diaphragm condensers. Plus, of course the distance from the sound source, which tends to be higher in a typical use of dynamic microphone due to the casing shape. So the main conclusion was that small diaphragm condensers are basically as good as dynamics at rejecting room reverb or noise.

Thank you for making a fair comparison despite being a brand that sells products that competes against the "benchmark". In my opinion, for the specific use case, the Shure SM7B is better (is it a better value thought? IMHO, not really) but that is due to its inheritant low sensitivity. If you somehow have a treated room, condenser mics would be generally better as they allow for more details to come through as well as more distance between the signal and the capsule. Guys, whenever you're trying to buy a mic KNOW THE ROOM you will use and WHAT you will use it for. To me, it was cheaper to sell my Rode NT1 and buy a shure than to reflection-proof my new room with acoustic foams/pannels. If you want to sing and have as much nuance as possible, a treated room + condenser will be better than a treated room+ dynamic mic (as a general rule). I switched from a Rode NT1 (the black one) to a Shure SM7B because I moved to a different house and in my new home "studio" I didn't have any bookshelves or furniture to block the reflections and the cost for the switch was only 50 Canadian Rubles in the used market. Remember folks, you don't need to overspend, learning proper recording technique + post production will generally yield better results than throwing money at studio gear without learning how to use them.

This is a cool video and I actually had to test this out myself. My final conclusions after testing tons of dynamic mics and condenser mics is that condensers and dyanmics can be at the same volume - but not the same detail. So condensers pick up more detail. More of the annoying sounds. ie put your LCT 440 pure and SM7B in a bathroom, turn on the water, what picks up the water? The 440 pure. Turn on a vaccuum. What picks up more of that. The LCT 440 Pure. Condensers pick up more of the annoying sounds.
@LEWITT-audio
@LEWITT-audio 2 ай бұрын
Thanks for sharing your thoughts! Yes, condenser pick up more high end detail which can make background noise more noticeable. So there are trade offs to consider. Most modern vocal production requires a higher level of detail/presence so even if you record with a dark dynamic you will be boosting the high end in the mix and boosting the noise up with it.

First of all thank you very much for the video! I am surprised by how bad the noise rejection is on that handheld dynamic mic, and by how good it is on that Dynamic mic. I wonder if that Dynamic mic has a higher noise rejection than typical condenser mics such as the Blue Yeti. Damn I didn't even have to guess Mic1/2/3 obvious which ones are which. The problem is not necessarily what you hear when you are like just pluggin these into the amp but once you start layering everything with processing. It's much easier to make condenser flat and you'll easily hear all the stuff of the room and like a crane near your house or something with dynamics they are much less sensitive.

It would be interesting how those microphones behave in a live setting with drums, amplifiers and wedge monitors. I am singing in very loud rock band and have experimented a lot to find a microphone, that is great sounding as well as having as much rejection possible. Condenser microphones (even handheld condensers) are so nasty in this regard - I mean I love their sound, but it is impossible to use them without screwing the whole FOH mix with all their bleed (when used as vocal mic).
@LEWITT-audio

In general, also a condenser microphone can have good rejection in a live setting. As others said here, it's not only a matter of sensitivity but also how the capsule rejects different frequencies. This can be tuned, and it varies from model to model across different manufacturers. The dynamic MTP 550 DM featured in the video works for many live musicians. Maybe you want to give it a try.
@TomCee53

An old fashioned trick for loud bands was to parallel two microphones out of phase next to each other and sing into one while the other only picks up the ambient sounds. The out of phase cancels out the background. That’s sort of how cardioid directional mics work, by mechanically subtracting the sounds from the rear.
@omnitone
@omnitone 2 жыл бұрын
from my inaccurate ears, it sounds like they all have the same noise rejection, but the detail of a condenser makes it more prominent. so rejection isn't the problem, it's how the hardware deals with the sounds that aren't rejected. ;-;

Wait the SM7B is not the industry standard for streaming, its the industry standard for radio!

I just picked up the LCT440 and I only use 20dB of gain and it is not perfect in my untreated space, compared to SM7B a fist away from my mouth, also the condenser is still extremely sensitive to anything in front and behind the mic even on such a low gain on my GOXLR

@@luk7n The 30 dB difference sounds accurate taking into the account the extremely low sensitivity of the SM7B. Try to compare the mics at the same distance and let us know if things have gotten better. Also consider that the capsule of the SM7 sits a few centimeters behind the foam ;)
@luk7n
@luk7n Жыл бұрын
@@LEWITT-audio I already did it, and I know about the capsule, my problem is that you claim the 440 pure is better than the SM7b, but that is not true, love the sound of the Lewitt but its extremely sensitive to any background noise, even on noise gate set to -40dB it picks up sound of my keyboard and stuff. I already returned the Lewitt

Sorry to hear you returned it 😔. but we're happy you found a solution that works in your environment. We're not claiming any mic is better in this video, only to provide education and a fun experiment! We hope that you end up using our mics again down the line. Cheers!

How about you do a test where you live by the roadside. Most of the people have living conditions where they can hear cars, motorcycles outside, and the fan noise. The untreated room in the video is still way far from the normal.

Shure SM7b was my choice on both tests. Only on the typing only part- I did not have a preference on the voice+ typing. The MTP550dm had way too much low end, test 2, typing only. Thanks for level matching. I think you are correct when compensation for dynamic mic's lower output levels are to bring it closer to the source.

I have a feeling that the implications of uttering "let's get ready to rumble" on distributed media are not fully understood by your legal and production teams....

@@riangarianga it's probably the most sued-over trademarked phrase in US history. I don't think they're going too come after this little video, of course. It is registered in multiple countries at this point, and the owners made more money suing over it than actually saying it themselves at this point. It may not be "a thing" in the country this video was made in, nor may it be actionable even if it were, as the video is in a different sphere: music technology. However, saying it is shyed away from in the media industry by-in-large.

Stupid. it is not a all the question of the technology of the microphone (condenser, Electret or dynamic), but their directivities (omni, cardioid, hypercardioid) , and the localisation and kind of the ambiant noise in the space. And, more than that, the linearity of the response curve outside from the axe od the mic. A distorted background noise, even at a lower level can be more annoying than a natural one. It is important in studio, where parasitic capture of other instruments at proximity interfere with their own tracks you'd like to keep alone.

In our conclusion, we found that neither condenser nor dynamic is inherently "better" at noise rejection. Watch the video and let us know what you think!
