At 6:00 I have found this to be the most important info during a brake install! A lot of times the brake pads you buy at auto parts stores will fit too tight because those clips are either the wrong ones or carelessness of the manufacturer. Then you have to pull out a file or dremel tool and shave a little bit of the ears down. A lot of people don't realize some clips (abutment clips) are designed to push the brake pad away from the rotor when the brakes aren't in use to minimize friction and brake wear, not simply to minimize rattles/squealing.

Yeia sou JIm. I agree with you 100%. When I first did my own brakes, I would omit cleaning the caliper brackets. As a result the rust buildup caused a very tight fit for the new pads. I now take a wire brush to them and make sure the pads slide freely.

Jim, my dad's breakes needed changing and while he was driving his breakes started making this noise and smelling like the breakes were rubbing. Once he got home he changed all 4 breaks pads on his sportstrac, but still making noise when he drive it.

Embarrassed to confess that I am guilty of this same mistake! I felt that since I had gone to auto mechanic school back in the late 60's I would be capable of doing such a simple job as replacing brake pads. Yes, you guessed right. My brakes squeal! Thank you for sharing your knowledge! I look forward to continue learning from you!

This video should be the first video when you google noisy brakes. I had a whistle coming from my passenger side that was driving me nuts, not to mention in looked bad coming from a luxury car. Watched a bunch of different videos, read a bunch of different forums, this should have been my only stop. Took the brake components apart, cleaned and lubricated. Issue completely fixed. THANK YOU!!!

Dude !!!! Thank you so much for this video. I did my own brakes about 8 months ago and started getting the squeal a few weeks ago. Amazingly, I bought cheap stuff and didn’t change the brake shims. Bought them at autozone as well as the grease and a couple hours later it’s quiet again. Thanks !! From now on, only good stuff and no half assing

that's the problem with mechanics in Malaysia. when we asked them to change brake pad, they really change the brake pad only. no lubricating, no cleaning. take the old out, put the new inside. i wish i have the courage to do it myself.

You don't need courage.. Just the tools and the information on how to do it. Course, if you never worked on your vehicle before I wouldn't suggest this be the first thing you try. Try an oil change or a lightbulb and go from there. The knowledge builds upon itself.

Thanks Eric, along with other of your DIY videos on brake systems, I now fully know what I must do to stop the noise from whatever my son-in-law and friends did when installing all new brake before giving us his car. I just did my front brake pads and missed some points that you went over. 2015 Jeep Cherokee Trailhawke front brakes. My runout was at .005" and thickness was 27.75 on average. I was a foreign car mechanic for 9 years but back in the late 60's and 70's. I will be replacing rotors on next brake pad replacement. I was wondering which manufacturer you suggest. Not a fan of rusty rotors. I was happy to see the Jeep cap! Glad I found you today!

Thanks for that sir! Last time, I asked my dad to work on my brakes, he said would, but only did the front. Then I asked him if he cleaned them and like what you said to lubricate those areas. From my Haynes owners manual guide it suggests that. This past fall months the brakes on the car have been making horrible noise. I even asked him if he did the back brakes, but he did not. That just makes me want to go to an auto shop instead.

I'm pricing all components for a complete brake disc and brake line change-out. So this informative video was both timely and helpful. I'm hoping the mechanic shop will take the time to clean and lube all metal to metal component contact points as I won't be there to oversee their handiwork. I'll be buying the components and they'll be doing the installation and labor. I'll certainly mention to them to lubricate all the components you mentioned.
