Whenever I get lost and can't find my way back to my base, I often eventually end up at my starter base instead. Thus, I built a road between my main and starter bases, added more features to make the starter base easier to spot, and upgraded the starter base a bit.

yeah this kinda happened to me, i had found a stronghold under a village house, i wasnt ready to go to the end so i built a 27 block tall magma block tower, and i had a water bucket and a hay bale to break my fall. Instead of using the water bucket to carefully get down i try to press LT at the right time with a hay bale, guess what i messed up. So after i respawn i try to make my way back to the stuff since it had literally everything, nearly die of hunger, then get punched by an zombie, die, respawn at home, equip some diamond armor i was gonna save for the dragon fight, so im surviving on raw food trying to get to the village (which was super far away) eventually i realized all my stuff was likely gone by now, so i tried to get back home buut i had no compass, so after a while of wild guessing i gave up. I have never played the world since because i fear running out of food then dying and losing my diamond armor. yeah.
