This is a very belated congrats on your family's new edition. Fatherhood is challenging but it's the best job in the world. I really appreciate the pdf G85 settings. I was a studio, hand held and robotic cameraman for many years shooting sports, news and corporate events. I finally left broadcasting to pursue RE videography and photography. Wish I had done this ten years ago.

Thank you for making great G85 content Nolan! Just started using the G85 this year to get my feet wet in the micro four thirds system, literally already have all the settings you listed except I set everything to -5, and my white balance is set to auto, which I'm probably gonna change because you're right about the white balance point. For my other C2 custom settings I curated my settings for photography. I came from the Fuji system last year and I kinda miss it but the G85 is still a killer camera worth it's value. Loved this video! I have a question when going from shooting indoors to outdoors, do you have to just adjust your settings on the fly or is there a setting that will allow the camera to function well in both settings?
@NolanGunn
@NolanGunn 2 жыл бұрын
There are two things at play here: 1 - Exposure 2 - White Balance I would recommend getting a variable nd filter so you can adjust exposure between indoor and outdoor (sometime you have to take the filter off indoors, so it’s not super smooth) For white balance, it will be a lot trickier. If you’re shooting with window light indoors then going outdoors won’t be a big deal for color - if you’re shooting under artificial warmer indoor light then you’ll either have to shoot auto white balance or do a hard stop switch from Tungsten to daylight.

Actually you get a similar "non-fault" if you let the battery go absolutely flat by leaving the camera for some time while it is downloading pictures via the USB lead. A new battery failed to start the camera for a minute or two, I assume it was recharging or booting something internally. Then eventually came back unaffected.

Would you still recommend the natural setting in order to get the most out of color grading? Thanks again!

Yes I’ve heard of it! You definitely get better dynamic range, but the big deal breaker for me is that you can only use auto white balance and it gives a slight blue cast to your image. So it could be a great option sometimes, but I’d go with cine d before I’d use fantasy

Hello! Great Content! Could you please tell what your favourite Wide lens with G85? I bought Tokina 11-16 with Viltrox m2 ii and I still trying to understand it. I don't know. I'm just taking baby steps... but it is normal that with viltrox when I make f 2.0 on this tokina lens all background is blurry even when I trying to shoot wide landscape. For wide landscape shooting or wide room shooting (for short films) my aperture on wide lens must be bigger? Like 5.5 to 12-13? Sorry if it's noob question. I always thought less f is greater. But with wide lens when I tried to shoot background without persons everything is blurry on small aperture.
@NolanGunn
@NolanGunn Жыл бұрын
Thanks so much! Great question: when you’re shooting landscapes or anywhere that you want everything sharp and in focus, raise your aperture to around f8-f11. This will lower the exposure (so be sure to compensate with shutter) but you’ll have a nice sharp image.

I do a lot of run and gun shooting so while i rely on the manual settinsg for my main C1 and C2 settings. I use C2-1 and C2-2 for shutter priority mode for video when I need it, one is for standard 25 fps and the other for slow mo. The thing is, that depending on on the nature of the lighting and movement in the shot - there can be differences in light and exposure cos they are auto. Is there a way of locking the camera so that it uses the first exposure setting it starts with once you start filming?? I know there is an AEL button but seem a bit confused about its use in video.
@NolanGunn
@NolanGunn 2 жыл бұрын
So you're wondering if when you press record the auto-exposure will lock until you stop recording? I don't know of a way to do that sadly. I'd recommend working on your manual exposure speed with either ISO or a variable nd.

@NolanGunn
@NolanGunn 3 жыл бұрын
So look at the end of your lens and you’ll see a filter thread number. It usually is followed by - ø I would recommend getting the largest one you can afford and then getting a step up ring set to adapt.

@@NolanGunn Does all variable filters fit on any cameras?Some filters on amazon are for canon only and some are not very clear.also are polarizing filters a combination of polarizer and nd filters?or do i need to get one separately( polarizer) if i want to remove some reflections on images?
@NolanGunn

So as long as your filter thread matches, a filter will fit on any lens. An ND filter is technically two polarizing filters put together, so you will not need a polarizer.

What ND filter size do you recommend for the lens you mentioned?
@NolanGunn

I would get something like a 77mm and then get a cheap step up ring set (or find the exact filter step up) That way, you can always swap to different lenses.

I am new to this and have the g85. What is the best way to shoot a video with a sitting talking head with a bookcase background and you want a little blur on the bookcase but the person to be sharp in focus? I will be shooting in 30 fps 4k since my editing program seems to work better with 30 rather than 24 fps, (Camtasia).
@NolanGunn
@NolanGunn 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Don! I would do a few things - - shoot at 25-42mm at the lowest aperture possible - bring your subject away from the bookcase (you may need to step back as well) - turn in focus peaking if you can (or double tap the screen in manual focus and it should punch in to check focus) #1 thing in creating background separation blur is to move your main subject away from the background. As far as your room will allow while keeping the composition the way you like.

Hey just found this video, i changed these settings and while I'm inside in a well lit room it seems to be very dark, is there anything I am missing?
@NolanGunn
@NolanGunn Жыл бұрын
Possibly, look through the viewfinder to see if the screen is too dark - if it still looks dark in the viewfinder I would double check your settings and then step outside on a sunny day. If it’s super bright and blown out outside then most likely your eyes think it’s a well lit room but the camera exposes it darker then you perceive. If that makes sense?

Hey! Sorry this wasn’t helpful to you. The dial I’m referring to is on the right side. You’ll see a C1, C2, and a little video symbol. - Set that right top dial to the little video symbol. - Go into your settings and find your exposure mode and set it to “manual” - go into your record settings and set to MP4 4k24p - set your SS, aperture, and ISO to what I had mentioned in the video - to set Shutter speed or aperture, turn one of the two little black dials on the top front of the grip and on the rear right of the camera (pointer finger and thumb respectively) each of those dials will change those individual settings. - to change ISO, press the top button on the selector buttons (it says ISO) on it. From there (while you are still on the little video symbol mode dial) go into your settings and select “cust set memory” and select C1 and save. That’s not everything in the video, but maybe it’ll help?

@NolanGunn
@NolanGunn 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the feedback! Changing the shutter is usually done in manual video mode with either the front or rear circular dial. It is set to the rear on mine. If the image is still too dark at 1.7 ISO 200 and 1/50, then consider adding a light to your kit, wait for better natural light, or boost the ISO to 400-800.

I was having the same issue but i figured out so hopefully I can explain it well enough. Basically you wanna prepare all of your custom settings on the creative video mode (the mode right below C1 on the dial) and then you wanna open settings while still on creative video, make your way down to custom, go to the option that says Cust.Set Mem. and save the creative video mode setting onto C1. This basically just makes a perfect copy of whatever settings you had on creative video mode to C1. Hopefully this made sense im not the best at explaining.

Great video, but I kindly disagree with the super auto focus. I think that's actually the only downside of the camera. For me, the autofocus absolutely sucks. Well, maybe it's also my settings because I'm still a newbie, but somehow I can't seem to get it right. Most of my talking head videos are unusable because they are completely out of focus.
