Miguel, I appreciate the videos. I lost my best friend of 17 years a year ago and I have been depressed. By watching your videos I was reminded about how he liked to do things the old fashion way. Guy was only 22 when he passed, but he loved using shave soap and a cut throat. I had to shave my beard off for work and this was the manliest way to do it and it was a great way to remember my friend. I'll keep watching if you keep posting - James Ryan from Texas, USA

So glad I found this video. I am currently in barber school in New York and it is so unbelievably frustrating how poorly it is run. The students really do teach themselves and they only train you to pass a state exam..not to actually cut hair in a real barber shop. Its a total money making racket. Fortunately it doesn't take very long and I am really looking forward to taking the next step in learning more about this great craft. Social media is such a huge outlet in connecting with and learning about great barbers like the ones in this video. It helps me get through the absurdity of barber school to see other barbers work and know that if you are passionate about learning, eventually you will become good at what you do.

I think what makes a great barber isn't just the paper license but a raw ability to cut great hair and give great shaves. The ability to talk to people and make loyal customers

Thank you for doing these videos. I'm 32, married, and have kids. I didn't really have guidance growing up so I dropped out of school. I went back and got my G.E.D but never knew what I wanted to do. I've thought about college for a long, long time. I never could make my mind up. I'd go from wanting one career to another. Looking at the bls.gov statistics on each career. I make good money now but I'm so unhappy with my job that it effects my life outside of work. Anyways, sad story aside, I've been thinking about going to a barber college for about a year. The few videos I've watched has me convinced to go to a barber school. Thank you again for them.

I have no hair left, but I still enjoyed that video. I've thought for a long time barbering, especially with your own shop, would be a great career. But now I'm 40 and married with kids and making good money at a job that's kind of eh. Guess I'll never know.

Excellent to see Anthony The Barber (the last guy) on this. I took photos from his Instagram into my barber and said 'this is what I'd like". Sacramento is a bit far to drive to get Anthony to cut my hair...but I have thought about doing it.

I cut out my garage and I have no license... I stay clean and sanitation is my biggest pet pea. I cut better than half of some barbers I've seen! I consider my self a barber. I ain't going to pay $10,000 for a barber license (barber school) just to cut in a shop. That's just my opinion. When is it proper to consider some one a barber? I love sculpting/cutting hair! I'm also a muralist, airbrush artist, and work a 9 to 5 so I don't have a long client list. I understand for those who have no choice in order to do what they love and do it full time and follow board rules, which are the licensing, school, etc. Much respect to the nomad barber and the rest of the barbers out there!

Glad you're continuing the series. I find it interesting even if I'm not in the trade, I don't even pay for haircuts... do my own with clippers whenever it starts to annoy me. Love watching your vids though.

The whole section about the board of health at approx 5:45 is so true. They only care about making money for the municipality. You could have the cleanest shop ever and they will just try to find any reason to fine you.

Definitely understand the long hair thing. We were talking about that at the barbershop I go to. You mistake some guys for women because of their hair, and it's strange. He told me now that the sidepart style and clean fades are making a comeback, he actually finds meeting young gentlemen pleasant for once. I can definitely agree with that. I'm happy for him, he's getting a lot more business now. I'm in high school, and have been around these guys. It's definitely a lot better to me seeing them showing their face, standing tall, and being clean cut with decency like a proper young man.

So as someone like you who is from the UK and coming to the US, is there a special license that you have to cut hair in different states, ie youre teaching a class to cut hair in California and in New York,

I normally don't hate on anyone but I would not want to get a haircut from that first dude that would not stop talking about his life story and complaining about school. There is just something about him I don't trust.

Finally you're in the US! I'm a little disappointed that a lot of these are on the west coast though, not that I'm surprised. The east coast seems to have a severe lack of good barbers. Like the last guy said, it's almost impossible to find barbers that can handle long hair. In my experience, 95% of them just cut it off, even if you explicitly ask to keep it long.

This is a great video! But I would love if you could interview a woman barber sometime. I'm a female barber and work in a barber shop under my grandpa, I strictly do men's hair. I love what I do. But I feel like at times I have a disadvantage because I'm female.

I sure wish I had met you in 2013 I have loved to have you give me a very short military style recon haircut very short on the top and razor shaved all the way up to the poridal ridge that high and all the way around my head. I would have appreciated it and enjoyed every minute of it as you're doing it the way that I described.

A dog in a barber shop? Who gives a shit! My dog is hypoallergenic and doesn't even shed. 3.5lb Yorkie. I hate people that bother me for bringing him into places when they know shit about the breed. Ignorance is running rampid in the streets and apparently online as well.

I disagree with the education statement. I fell just short of receiving my papers (for a stupid reason) and have still served my town with quality haircuts for about 8 years....does this mean I'm not a barber? I think repetition and experience will better any skill you possess and papers are not what makes you a barber.

their are still very few great barbers & shops available in the States including NYC, but their are many flunky barbers & funky barber shops that really turns me off! i love traditional barbers & their shops, but the barbers & their businesses we have today SUCKS! a Real Barber LOVE's what He or She does to make their Customer Return, NUFF SAID!
