In the last months things have really moved fast at Thork Racing who makes Drivemode Dashboard 2 (DMD2). With a close relationship to it's users the sofware has taken giant leaps and they has opened the hardware market by licensing other manufakturers to create hardware made for DMD2.
In this video I get you up to speed on what's happening and also show you hands on a few new devices.

Quick Information: The "Licensing" thing is not something we make money with, we actually call it "Certification". Its totally free for ANY manufacturer. It was just a way to try to somehow control the quality of the products that are being manufactured by the many different manufacturers that market and target for DMD2. We are also making sure the integration is perfect and is not going to be broken on the next update. We just dont want the hardware to ruin the experience for the users. If you are doing hardware just for you, at home, we even added instructions on how to implement (for example controllers). Devices with "DMD2 Edition" are not exactly "Licensed", it simply means that devices sold by Thork Racing obviously include DMD2 Lifetime License, only the devices we sell include DMD2 Lifetime pre-installed, we are not licensing DMD2 to any device (phone or tablet) at the moment, not only its a nightmare to manage but its not like there are many manufacturers asking for it. We rather certify the devices and if they want to offer DMD2 they can get licenses at reseller price. Products where the name start with DMD, like the DMD-T865 and DMD-T665 are devices made for us, under our guidance and requests, and because we like the result we are putting our brand on it. We will be adding controllers and even one OBD2 dongle, and all this will be made by the same manufacturers already available in the market and that we already resell. The reason why we are not locking anything in our software and opening it up to everyone, even helping them develop products and code, and even inviting them to make our products, is because we believe that in the long run this will bring us more users and create a bigger market with more exciting products. Also our community was very clear and verbal about this, this is what our users want.

@THORKRACING - North American resident here (Canada). Your devices are priced too high when comparing to market leaders here such as Garmin Zumo XT/XT2 (newly released). I just recently purchased the XT2 after considering your (Thorx) products and it was priced out when I looked at what benefits I would gain. I love reviewing products and consider myself a techie but you may find it difficult to penetrate this market with those prices.

Hello, a friend of mine bought the big Carpe Iter last year. On the first tour to Croatia the software kept crashing. Thork was also unable to repair the device via the Internet. Thork took the device back after the tour without hesitation. As nice as the theoretical advantages of the system are, I much prefer a Samsung smartphone, because the Software is more stable. I like your videos a lot, please keep it up, best regards, Malte

I would never buy such an expensive device without knowing I can handly all warranty issues locally with my own language. Active Tab 3 with Brodit/RAM cradle was was good on 890 R, but when I put it to EXC500 it lasted 2000km of heavy vibrations from single cylinder in offroad condition and then it was toasted. Some components loosened on circuit board and it was lenghty discussion with Samsung service to make them believe that device has problem. I hope Thork comesup with some longterm proof that devices can withstand offroad usage and charging works on single cylinder bike without pogopins drilling themselves into contact pads...

I have one of these, and I got a lemon. It broke down twice and randomly reprogrammed itself once on the trails. So, do I rate the Carpe Iter? Yes. I got a bad one, it was repaired once, when it played up again, well out of warranty it was replaced with a brand new device, which has worked perfectly. If you are really bad at tech, then maybe go with Garmin but if you can work an Android phone, you'll be all good.

That's a big 'YES' to a tutorial video, please. I'm just a recreational rider doing relatively short journeys, no ADV trips etc, but I am finding these developments fascinating 😊 I'm also not very techy. I think I've grasped what DMD2 is, but to get the best from it I guess you have to use an OBD dongle, yes? How will you manage that on rented bikes in Tanzania? I'm starting to believe that if I'm going to spend reasonable money on a bike tolerant satnav (Garmin, TomTom, etc) then for a little bit more it can be a multi-functional device like one of these. I hope that with this pace of development the tablet device you buy today can be updated tomorrow. Bring on that tutorial 😁

You should try SilverFox B8J bluetooth controller. Made in Finland. Not plastic like others it is alloy! And your bike controls stays as close as they are original. Nice! It works nice with DMD2 now and with other Android apps. I have use it with DMD2 beta about 2000km now and also a bit with LocusMaps. SilverFox works with phone and with tablet if you want bigger screen. Nice buttons and joystick. I have Oikitel RT3 tablet on my CRF300 Rally. It is ok - just could be a bit brighter on sunny days. DMD2 maps are not yet so god as you can get on LocusMaps at Finland. Hope that in the future you can use same maps with DMD2. Thank you so much for all the DMD2 videos. AND OTHER VIDEOS TOO. Very interesting. In fact, I'm right looking at the DMD-T865 to mount on my KTM 890 to replace the Zumo XT. My only concern right now is the screen brightness of 800 Nits vs the 1000 Nits of the Carpe Iter (which is not any more sold by Thork). Have you by now been able to check the brightness of your DMD-T865 under direct sunlight compared with the Carpe? By the way, very good point on the weight of the devices. Was not taking that into account. Thanks a lot.

Built my own cheap as chips navi solution with the help of your videos using an SEK350/GBP25 blackview rugged phone and dmd2. I totally love it apart from one thing - I can’t make turn by turn nav work in dmd2, so I’m stuck with osmand for now. That’s not a bad solution, but I do love the idea of one app for everything. You mention turn by turn in this video, which suggests it is possible somehow. Do I need the beta version, then? What’s the secret that unlocks the full potential here?
@NomadSweden
@NomadSweden Жыл бұрын
Well, DMD2 has turn by turn, but only if you make the route in DMD2 because it will use actual roads. Personally I most often use GPX files and they are not limited by roads but only GPS coordinates, which makes turn by turn impossible in some cases. Some apps allow conversion on tracks to routes for turn-by-turn but you must know it only uses the GPX for inspiration and alters the track to fit the roads. I like to use tracks like lines on a map and just follow it. To get the beta you go to Google Play where you downloaded DMD2 and click "Join beta program". It's a bit down if you scroll you will find it. It's great that you can use this in a cheap way as you did. 👍🏻

@NomadSweden @ThorkRacing As a long time Garmin user, I'm considering switching to the *DMD-T665 NAV PHONE* as I don't like the Garmin policy of the last few years at all. I have a few important questions: Can I also plan the routes on my MacBook like I do with Garmin Basecamp and only then transfer them to the DMD2 devices? Can I also save the planned routes on my computer in a database (with preview on a map)? As we are now on the road 90% of the time, we are very interested in turn-by-turn navigation. It should also be possible to drive on small winding roads / beautiful roads (such as those marked green by Michelin). What is the current status here? I am available for an exchange of ideas.👍🏻

Another thing to add would be running a tablet in split screen with Locus Maps on the left and DMD2 on right since Locus has better on road routing. DMD2 would show ODB2 info or weather radar. Assuming DMD2 will run in split screen.

One of the biggest problems I have with my phone compared to a old school tom tom is using it with gloves on or when the screen is wet. I would like to see some more info on that with these devices.

There is a lock screen button in the upper right corner that should prevent a wet Android screen to develop it's own life.

@NomadSweden
@NomadSweden 5 ай бұрын
If you want to run DMD2 you should have the T-865. Carpe is not allied with Thork Racing anymore, which is why Thork made their own tablet the way they like it. Plus the T-865 is much lighter and trusty.

Hi! Could someone give comment about GPS work. How quick and good it is without internet connection (A-GPS usage)? As some older tablets are not good with location detection and precision when internet connection is not available. Thanks in advance!
@NomadSweden
@NomadSweden Жыл бұрын
Hi! The certified devices have a tough requirement to have high quality GPS chipset. Because indeed it is the core functionality. So it's not like the normal consumer tablets relying on also mobile triangulation. Their product page says "Believe it or not, the GPS precision is higher than 90% of dedicated GPS units". I have never had a problem so far and I use them offline mostly.
Жыл бұрын
The T865 and T665 have the best GPS we ever seen, better than S22 Ultra, better than the Carpe, better than the Garmins. We even have a external GPS connection on the T865 but never announced it because it just does not need it. It's the fastest fix, precision is sub 2m most of the times and location is spot on, zero issues. This is now our "gold standard" at DMD2.

I have a question! What is the different be a pre installed dmd2 on a Samsung galaxy (kzfaq.info/sun/FL-AeHuLUffYi9pIdGjqH61A) which costs ~€400 and the Carpe iter device for €800?

Mainly brightness and gps-cirquit which has better update frequency and precision. Probably more, if you read on the website. But the Samsung is a popular choice also.

The only thing that would take devices like these to the stratosphere were if they'd also support Android Auto and CarPlay

@@NomadSweden It doesn't have to be very complicated. It could work like it does on a Carpuride where they're just apps for those who wants to use it. Support for the controllers would be nice but just by the touchscreen is good enogh.

Жыл бұрын
You are mixing products. This is targeted at best at Garmin Tread 8". You cannot use handlebar controllers or install apps on the devices you mention. That's a closed Garmin system.

@ But how much value are you placing on the ability to install apps? These devices are certainly made for a specific use case(s) requirements.
@toddwmac
@toddwmac Жыл бұрын
I have to agree with @starstreetadventures The US and European markets have some different needs and or use cases when it comes to serious Nav. As a rider (and tech geek) who keeps a 1250 GS in Europe and a 990R in the desert here in the US, I live in two worlds when it comes to GPS and nav needs. In the US I rely on dedicated devices like a Garmin's Montana (despite my disdain for them) or my trusty rail Tech Voyager Pro to get me through the thousands of miles of backcountry roads and trails. In Europe however, I rely on a TomTom Rider and my cell phone. Different needs for different tools....with different levels of failure implications. This trend of adding more and more bells and whistles to Nav Systems does not really track to the serious ADV rider who uses their bike in true back country environments with a near zero tolerance for failure. I really don't want a GPS that I can install apps on. An open ecosystem looks good on the promos, and maybe for the guys tearing up the autobahn with their ADV bikes, but the system stability risks and feature creep costs are just too high. Most riders need fewer distractions on their bars and controls and more time in the saddle focused on the ride. If people would spend half the time and money on their off-road skills as they spend screwing around with $1500 nav electronics, most on the trail would be better off.

The devices are targeted at users who want an Android device where they can install multiple apps, users who want to use handlebar controllers too and users who want to do roadbooks. I'm the main dev at DMD, and more team members ride with me. I don't even ride in the street, 100% off-road in either ACT/TET like rides or local hard Enduro with small bikes. I never had a single problem with my one year old T665, we have 6 extreme riders testing the devices too. We ride multi days on these things, that's our target, devices need to handle multiday off-road rides.
