The NOMATIC Travel Pack is a 20- to 30-liter expandable backpack that looks good but lacks some functionality where it matters most. View Our Full Review: packhacker.com/travel-gear/no...

NOMATIC, as you may or may not know, is a Kickstarter-launched brand that set out to make the “most functional travel bag ever.” And they have a new contender up for consideration.
The NOMATIC Travel Pack is a 20- to 30-liter expandable backpack that offers a smooth, streamlined look and some clear upgrades over the NOMATIC Travel Bag we reviewed previously (not confusing at all, right?)
To make matters slightly more confusing, the NOMATIC Travel Pack (that’s pack, not bag) we're reviewing also has some improvements over its original version. This new version of the pack was released in August 2019 with some minor tweaks compared to the previous edition-at the time of this review, it’s the latest version available.
So, does the NOMATIC Travel Pack come closer to that “most functional” goal the Utah-based company is going for? We’ve been testing it for three weeks in Detroit, Michigan to figure it out. Let’s take a look.
The NOMATIC Travel Pack is a great improvement on the Travel Bag, (which we've reviewed in the past) but there's still a lot to be desired. Although there are solid organization and features like expandability-and some upgraded materials-they don't come together well in a holistic sense. If you want a full-featured, structured bag with expandability, then the NOMATIC Travel Pack could be for you. But if you plan on hauling this around as a one-bag travel pack with a bunch of heavy gear, you may want to look for something more comfortable.

Hey Drive YT Brand - we're glad to hear you're digging the review. It seems like the depth on this pack when fully expanded (9.5") is larger than most carry-on specifications. Hope this helps! 😊 - Rebecca

First things first - this is probably the best review on youtube, period. And here are my thoughts when I read all those comments: 1. I think this is a quite good balance between everyday use (20L) with an option(!) of 2-3(?) days trip where the only route when you carry a "full load" would be home-airport/train station - hotel - airport/train station - home. Yes, maybe a bit heavy but not as horrible as some may describe it, I think. 2. Not suitable as personal bag on some airlines? Well yes.. but it depends. Like if you travel with a cheap cr*p like Ryanair you'll have to do some sacrifices anyway.. I usually go with full check-in + small bag.. but still you can probably fit it as Carry on, which is 55x40x20 (cm) for a short trip. For most "normal" airlines you can just squeeze it just a bit to match the requirements. 3. Price... well for this build I would agree that it is a bit overpriced, but having 2 separate backpacks for daily + casual trips is more expensive.. Obviously for people who like short "activity" trips, where you have to carry a full load all the time, Nomatic is not an option at all. That being said, I would love to hear any suggestions on competitor which is capable to do a similar jump from 20 to 30 (I mean comparable jump), from daily to the "trip" mode with a comparable slick design (does not look like a sack) which is important for daily use and similar quality. Thank you!

Ad Hominem Ryanair doesn’t check the sizing of the “small bag”. I’ve been carrying my 30L Eagle Creek Wayfinder with no trouble. As long as it fits under the seat they’ll let you in.

This review was extremely timely, as I just received my Nomatic Travel Pack; so thank you. I'm sending it back. A bit of explanation...I purchased the bag with the expectation that it would be a "personal item" bag that could be used under seat in addition to my rolling bag. Due to my need to carry medical equipment when I travel, one bag travel is not possible except for short trips. In these cases, the Peak Design Travel Backpack is my go to bag, since it is large enough to cope with the machine, my meds, my tech and enough for a short trip. However, the problem comes when I have to carry my camera gear. I cannot take my camera gear with the Peak Design backpack alone; the bag is too heavy. What I was hoping for with the Nomatic bag was a pack that could handle my machine and tech, while the roller handles my camera gear, which I can get on any flight anywhere. In this respect, the Nomatic travel pack failed. Dividing my tech gear into the Nomatic bag was cumbersome and the sunglass case (as you accurately described) could not be used because it used up too much space. I could get my gear into the bag, but it required the hip straps and the hip straps were VERY difficult to get on and off, which would be necessary since this bag would go under the seat. In addition, while the pack was comfortable to wear at 20L, it was not at 30L and at 30L it will not fit under the seat. It's a great looking bag. Functionally, however, for my needs, it was not.

I bought this bag & I use it for daily wear and travel. For daily use is good but definitely feel little heavy when I put some items compare to other backpack. For travel it’s good after expand especially minimalist pack like myself. The cons is like Tom mention is the shoulder padding making my shoulder quite fatigue after an hours especially expand and packed more stuff. Also the chest strap if can make a removable that’ll be bonus. Pro tips have to put the waist strap better support & less fatigue on my shoulder during travel. The material definitely are top notch & feel last longer. Overall I love this bag looks and for my convenient, can be use in many ways whether in daily or travel.

I have the original version of the Nomatic Travel pack, which I use mostly as a laptop+tech bag. For that purpose, I find it a very good fit for the way I travel. I don't use it for carrying my clothes as I have a rollerboard for that. Pretty much all of the organizational features of this bag are useful to me (great for holding laptop, chargers, cables, power banks, etc.) . I only use the expansion feature if I buy (or am given) stuff that I didn't originally plan to bring back on my return trip. The bag is almost a perfect match for my business travel needs. But there are a few shortcomings - 1) I wish there was an external documents pocket. I don't like having to open up the bag to get to my travel documents. 2) it's clumsy hiding the shoulder straps with the metal snaps 3) the luggage pass-through should open up easier, a lot of times it's a struggle to mount this bag onto the handles of my rollerboard.

I've had the original for years. If you need a bag to pack up in the car and go on a road trip, or a carry on...This bag is the best imo. If you are going to edc and walk around all day sight seeing etc, there are better and lighter bags. I just had to evacuate my home because of a nearby fire and i tossed everything in my nomatic through it in the trunk and off we went. Laptop, cords, medicinces, wallet, clothes, toiletries. All i needed for a couple days. Good review, but it really depends on what you are using it for

the zipper talk is extremely important, i loved the old version but the zipper broke and the bag became useless, being in Australia, there is no way for me to send it back for warranty. I was very excited to learn the new version updated the zipper, but no where in the website it stated that there are still some old style zippers??? Luckily that you pointed that out, thank you so much. Very very crucial infor for this bag IMO. THANKS!

I had a problem recently with Wizz airline because they asked me to fit the backpack in those "bag sizer" and it actually doesn't fit properly. They ask you to fit horizontally and also vertically, but the NOMATIC backpack does not fit horizontally, so I had to pay a fee for extra luggage, they didn't accept as carry-on bag. I'm looking for people who have faced this same problem. The bag sizer is 40x30x20

hi, great review, I have the old and yes, for the price, ykk should be used for all zippers, I like that is is small enough for a weekend bag and under airplane seat use (i am 6'6", so most bags are too big). I also wish they went with external and possibly internal compression straps like other companies (I have tortuga and osprey, for example) and I think the expansion would be much more usable and take the tension off of the zippers when overpacked. I use packing envelops and small packing cubes primarily.

IMHO the verdict is way to harsh. I own the "old" version and absolutely LOVE it! The organisation in this backpack is amazing. If you want you can find a desired pocket for everything. Also, this is a great one bag travel option. After storing your stuff at the accommodation you can use this back for shorter trips. I used it for many monthly trips as well and can only recommend it! Excellent review. I would say the theme of this bag is "2 steps forward, 1 step back" given how it seems that every pro has a con (e.g. sunglasses case storage area impinges on the main storage area, getting in the way of other items like those larger packing cubes). Not my aesthetic, but more importantly, the features don't gel. The Peak Design is much more structured and well thought out. I don't have much use for internal organiation since I like to roll my own with pouches, etc. so this kind of bag wouldn't appeal to me anyway. Lastly, the overall look reminds me of a spaceman or something. Not a good look in my book.

I've used the "old" version of this backpack for 3 months now. I absolutely don't understand why they released a new model. Besides some small design elements, nothing seems to have changed. I've used it mainly as daily pack for work and uni but also some smaller trips. My verdict is actually much better, for me it ticks the right boxes (especially that it's available in Europe). The biggest downside for sure is that it's pretty heavy. Also thanks for telling me that I can remove the sternum strap, I tried and failed before haha

The first version is not water resistant at all. It absorbs water, if it rains heavily your electronics will get soaked. Another problem were the zippers, if you search around many people complain of broken low quality zippers. The version 2 fixes these two problems, alongside a better look.

So, I'm not sure I understand about the expandable zipper comment. He says (at 10:43) , "...this part of the bag is not really expandable when fully compressed." So, is the larger storage area not accessible at all when compressed?? Like, is that zipper hidden or something until you expand it? This would seem to be a huge design flaw on the part of Nomatic. Either way, can you clarify?

I'm now using the first version of the nomatic travel pack for about 10 month. The tech oraganization is ok for me, but the travel feature failed. I buyed the Bag with the idea to use it for 2 days business trips as alternative to my (more or less half empty) roller luggage to just get more moveability on the airports and in the subways. But in reality, if it's fully loaded it's just to heavy on the sholders and that makes the usage to a pain. Also unexpected for me was, that in "full capatacy mode" the bag is so thick that you really need to take care that you don't hit someone if you turn around. Another point, at least for business travellers, is that you need to move it the entire day... from the conference room to the working place to somewhere else - and all time you have this heavy block to move.

@@PackHacker Hey Rebecca, for the moment i'm still using it but only as Daypack. For travelling im using a combination of a roller luggage with the backpack - it's not perfect but much better than the "Travel Feature". But i will replace it in 01.2020 when i'll get my new (smaller) Laptop and therefor i'll buy a (tech) Messanger Bag and a suitable roller lagguage. I think that this is the best combination for my usage. At least i have a positive point for the NOMATIC Travel Pack as daypack: The compartment in the middle is big enough for a (really) small cooling bag... it's awesome if you spend some hours in a Car or Train (and a meeting room as well) in the summer. But the next project is a hiking backpack for day trips with kids in the (austrian) Alps...

@@PackHacker No I didn't use it Now, I use Errant backpack from Boundary Supply for EDC and work. If traveling, I tend to use a backpack with a small duffle style bag or roller luggage bag for clothes and backpacks for cameras and electronic devices. I like Errant because they have reflections points that look plain and inconspicuous, But I think Nomatic compartment storage is better and looks like a hybrid backpack for formal style working bag and business trip.

The bag just uses material that is way too thick. I dont want a rubber box on my back. It reminds me of swissgear bags that are way too bulky. Make one out of 1000D cordura like the minaal and you have a winner for sure.

I think their the just need an opportunity to improve this bag. I think the old version is already great except for the weight and shoulder padding. With weight i can understand that due to material choice and structure there is not much they can do. BUT the shoulder pad, just make them dense and thicker. I stopped using this bag just because it is not feasible to use it as a travel bag.

Hi, I'm having trouble figuring out which day/travel packs would be effectively water resistant/proof. When walking around Edinburgh and hiking in the Trossachs last week in light rain, I had some wetness with my old LLBean 40L Student backpack (it's been a workhorse for my purposes even though it started life when I went back to nursing school 10 years ago). I haven't seen much addressed in any reviews about this. I don't like the foldover tops and wondered if any zipped ones were waterproof in rain (non-immersion).
@PackHacker
@PackHacker 4 жыл бұрын
Hey Catherine - most packs are water or weather-resistant rather than waterproof, which is why we always recommend traveling with a rain cover packhacker.com/travel-gear/unigear/backpack-rain-cover/ to protect your pack. However, if you're looking for a pack with some good weather resistance you can check out the Tortuga Outbreaker Backpack 35L packhacker.com/travel-gear/tortuga/outbreaker-backpack/ the Mission Workshop Radian packhacker.com/travel-gear/mission-workshop/radian/ the Cotopaxi Allpa 35L packhacker.com/travel-gear/cotopaxi/allpa-35l-travel-pack/ the GORUCK GR2 packhacker.com/travel-gear/goruck/gr2/ and the Osprey Farpoint 40L packhacker.com/travel-gear/osprey/farpoint-40/ Most packs with a TPU coating will add to the weather resistance too. For daypacks, we recommend checking out the Matador Freerain24 2.0 packhacker.com/travel-gear/matador/freerain24-2-0/ and the Tortuga Outbreaker Daypack packhacker.com/travel-gear/tortuga/outbreaker-daypack/ Hope this helps! - Rebecca
