Follow along as we create a sci-fi crate using non-destructive modelling techniques with the ND Addon in Blender. This tutorial is appropriate for beginner/intermediate level users with general Blender experience who want to learn more about non-destructive or hard-surface modelling.
ND (short for non-destructive) is a FREE Blender addon that provides a number of workflow enhancements, tools, operations, and generators - tailored specifically for non-destructive modelling.

When you boolean something and have the cutter still active you duplicate it to use on another spot you'll have to run the boolean for the duplicated mesh again. I found a tool called Smart 'Duplication' by Miguel Pozo (pragma37) over at gumroad. So now when you cut with boolean and want to duplicate the cutter mesh, it will be duplicated with the boolean and stuff as well. Means you hit ctrl+d and the cutter is duplicated and already booleaned like the mesh duplicated from. This option could come in handy with ND and booleans too...since you're making so much progress with ND. Thumbs up, by the way ! :-) (I guess it's basically looking to what the cutter is linked to and copies the modifier as well) This tool has some handy SMART options to pinpoint what and how to duplicate. And it comes with 'smart delete' It does two things but very nice.

Hey, hoping that development on this addon is still going on because I absolutely love it coming from a more CAD oriented background. I have a recommendation that I thought would be neat for mesh reusability. I think it would be super neat to have a variable system where you could make an easy to modify variable window where you could create floats/deg and min/max ranges then assign them when you do an action. With this is could allow for parametric design where you could make a part with say a few bool operations that could be changed quickly and change the whole shape. This way you could make a "base" part with all the parameters you need then copy it and change the vars on the fly with sliders to transform it into whole new shapes. I dont think I explained it well, but I would love to see a parametric system added to this already great system to make a ton of part designs for smashing together into new models! If you want more of an explanation or examples let me know id be happy to provide them!

Development has been on hold for a few months as I am in the middle of another project, but I will keep working on ND once this is wrapped up (it hasn't been abandoned). Our Discord server is the best place to stay up-to-date; it's also a great place to talk about ideas and what you'd like to see added to ND in the future.

Is it possible to configure the settings sush that utils related to selected mesh shows up instead of all the unitls showing up when toggling on utils visibity? Maybe an another button for local util visibity and not global util visibility?
@HugeMenace

It's not possible at the moment using toggle utils, but I could add it as a feature! As an alternative, you can go through just a single object's utils though if you use the cycle operator.

@HugeMenace Is it possible for you to readd the weighted bevel as even following your instructions from after you removed it I can not get the same results
@HugeMenace
@HugeMenace 17 күн бұрын
Which version of Blender are you using? I've tried it on 3.0.0, 4.1.0, and 4.2.0 Beta, and I get the expected result. Are you definitely using a 1-segment bevel and then SHIFT clicking (don't keep sharp edges) on the weighted normals operator offered by ND? - Tristan
@MarcoTesti-nz8ww
@MarcoTesti-nz8ww 3 ай бұрын
Hi Tristan, I have a problem with the difference boolean at 23:36, where you use the inner part of the crate to cut the outer panel. The boolean operator appears not to work correctly, as only half of the outer top panel is cut and generally the mesh on the inside of this part is ruined.

Hey there. It'll be easier for me to help you with more details/screenshots. Can you jump on our Discord server (link in the video description)? I'd be happy to help you out there. If not, I suggest trying to swap the solver on the boolean. You can do this manually from the modifier stack or by selecting the inner part (acting as a utility object), choosing swap solver from the boolean menu, and setting it to exact. I cover this process in the Booleans video in the ND Deep Dive series: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/q7mZdcmhr5zYdWg.html

@HugeMenace
@HugeMenace Ай бұрын
The WN bevel operator no longer exists in ND, but you can still achieve the same effect by adding a 1-segment bevel (chamfer) and then adding the weighted normal modifier holding down the SHIFT key. Still works in Blender 4.0 and above. - Tristan

35:34 absent WN Bevel. ND v1.38.0. Can you please tell me how to add it? I was only able to add it using the "modifiers" tab.
@HugeMenace
@HugeMenace 5 ай бұрын
I ended up removing the WN bevel in one of the recent ND updates, as it can be achieved using the standard bevel modifier. You can get the same result by applying a normal bevel with 1 segment and then shift-clicking on Shading > Weighted Normals. OR, add a 1 segment bevel, and while the operator is open hitting H to harden the normals.

@@HugeMenace On all objects I have done so, except for the bolts. When I try to add another bevel, the already created large bevel opens. I had to go to the modifiers section and add a bevel for the chamfer there.

@HugeMenace Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the report. Blender 3.4 is still in Alpha, so I suggest sticking to one of the stable/LTS releases. But I'll investigate what's going on in 3.4, and hopefully, ND will work as expected by the time it's stable. As for 3.3.1 and not being able to change the segments on a Macbook, can you elaborate on what's happening? Is the parameter being selected (you get a blue dot next to it), but it's not updating the value, is there a specific error message, etc.

@@HugeMenace yes it is selected and i can change the value by using keyboard, but as i said, not by moving my finger on touchpad (which works on other value changes in your add-on - so it is not a hardware problem)

To help narrow it down further, since you're specifically using a touchpad... are you scrolling or panning? What happens when you move your cursor left/right (assuming mouse values are enabled in the add-on preferences)?

@@radikalcreates ND doesn't currently support right-click select configurations for operators such as Panel, Geo Lift, and View Align. In the meantime, if you select an object and run an operation that requires face selection, pause the operator (default is backslash "\" - can be updated in the addon preferences), and select your face with right-click. At 6:45, after the Difference Boolean operation, I expected the plate to cut the original shape into two separate parts. But it only created a groove in the middle. Similarly, at 8:15 also, the bar did not punch a hole through the shape. Again, the Difference Boolean operation only created a shallow indentation in the shape. Why is that?
@HugeMenace
@HugeMenace 4 ай бұрын
That'll be because we created a second "shell" around the original object at 4:08, which we're cutting into using the difference boolean at those 2 points you referenced. The original object is still there, behind it, which you see showing through afterwards. Does that make sense?
@nagesharas5136
@nagesharas5136 4 ай бұрын
@@HugeMenace Thanks for the clarification, but it is still mind-boggling. I only got a vague idea, But if I were to create another object on my own, this method would not occur to me. Another example is at 20:58, where you created an 4x array of the "fastener". When you explain, it seems easy. But I won't be able to do it on my own! These steps also seem to be path-dependent: Depending upon the previous operations, the order of modifiers changes. So the same step would get me totally different results. Thus, the key is to predict how the stack of modifiers interacts. This video has many such magic moments, but each is difficult to execute on our own. We need to learn each trick separately and master them. Could you make separate videos to step us through such effects, so that we really grasp the subject? Thanks in advance!
@nagesharas5136
@nagesharas5136 4 ай бұрын
I come from SketchUp, so I am used to 2D-to-3D paradigm. Even with Blender, using CAD Sketcher makes things easier for me. But ND uses stacks of modifiers, which is the other extreme for users like me. Hence the request!

@HugeMenace 4 ай бұрын
