1:40 I was playing through that part of the game today. It was so emotional, I nearly cried. It's a bit different than how it happens in this trailer but as - or more even - heartbreaking, since in the game we get to meet Jackie and he's so well written, so real, so "human". The story so far is unbelieveble, it's like a novel more than it is like a tv series, I feel it's way more intimate than any series I have ever seen achieved to be. There is so much effort made to make all the characters and relationships between them (not just you and them but between all the npcs in the game). Now, I shouldn't be watching Hannah's video right now... I should be playing...

If i remember correctly the US military was looking for professional players of Starcraft 2. Starcraft is a competitive games franchise where the players have to micromanage a lot of different units which have different purposes/abilities. So the military wanted to mimic those players skills to create an ai capable of coordinating multiple drones at the same time. But it was 2 or 3 years ago. I don't know if this project still exist or if they found professional player willing to work with them.

@@pawelzietek The military has hired professional gamers for several unique jobs. Drone pilots were one of those jobs, as well as remote bomb defusal squads, satellite techs, etc. Military strategy is effectively a strategy game, and having someone able to detach emotions in those situations is useful and leads to more successful outcomes. Is it a great feeling? No, war is awful - but the alternative is having longer wars with more dead.

@@HannaHsOverInvested the military has been leveraging first person shooters to some degree since the 90s, and in the mid 00s there was a shooter produced in 2 versions, one for the military and one for the civilian market. It builds habits like finding cover and checking corners of rooms as you enter and that kind of thing. FPS games by themselves aren't enough, but they do build useful habits, especially for MOUT or Military Operations in Urban Terrain.

The cyberpunk genre of fiction traces back, primarily, to the writings of a few core authors: William Gibson, Walter Jon Williams, and Philip K Dick. It's in the Sprawl trilogy of books by Gibson that the Netrunner character type and the connection of the Voodoo Boys to the cyberspace of the game find their origins, but the setting of Cyberpunk 2077 itself as a game goes back to Cyberpunk 2020, a creation of Mike Pondsmith who worked with CDPR on this video game adaptation of his work. I'm just seriously impressed by how much effort was involved to stay faithful to the spirit of the genre and to the work of Pondsmith. As a lifelong tabletop RPG player who played Cyberpunk 2020 it's insane to be in 2020... playing Cyberpunk...

@@HannaHsOverInvested It's a bit untrue for Cyberpunk. Well, you can, but you'll still have to fight. But you can use a range of non-lethal weapons like Electric staff and things like that; or invest in an upgrade for your cybereyes which makes all your weapons - including firearms - non-lethal. But you still shoot people; just non-lethaly. But you can avoid a lot of fights with clever discussion choices, yes.

@@gerardlacroix6015 also, non-lethal takedowns are quite effective. Sneaking up behind folks and choking them out. It is harder to avoid others around them noticing you, but very satisfying. You generally can't get away with doing everyone in a mission like that though, especially at lower levels. Later on you can largely break the stealth system haha. The quickhack System Reset lets you hack people and knock them out - haven't tried it on Adam Smasher yet though ;). I'm guessing if you want no-kill playthrough you'd need to do non-lethal shooting, or get the rocket launcher arm and tranquilizer dart ammo. Also there are hacks to temporarily blind people or deafen them so they don't notice you taking their friends down, and you can hack other stuff in the environment to distract people.

I've been binging on Cyberpunk since minutes after it released. They've created one of the most immersive worlds I think I've ever experienced in a game. There are some genuinely emotional moments in the game that I totally wasn't expecting. There are, of course, the adrenaline-filled action moments as well, but the writing really did take me by surprise. There are several plot twists I did NOT see coming, even knowing as much as I did about the game. It took me 6 HOURS to even get through the "intro" portion of the game to get to the title card and the end of "Act 1." It could've taken much longer, even, if I'd kept doing side missions and the like - most of which have stories of some sort attached to them as well. CDPR has created another narrative masterpiece here. They will forever have my respect and my preorders.

10:56 YES! It's called, Life. I never went to college, but I've honestly learned more about resource management, credit, time management, efficiency, economies, and especially multitasking from games than I have anything else in my life. I don't say that as a claim it's a "superior" method, it's not. But there any many general "brain improvements" that come from playing games, including hand-eye coordination and quick reflex decision making. Strategy and planning, like playing a chessboard that is 100x times as big, with twice as many pieces, and each has even more varied mechanics of how it can be used. Then sometimes it's just a narrative or visual piece. It's almost like the analogy of how calculus is to the brain what working out is to football. You don't lift weights while playing football but it helps you, strengthens your body. You don't use calculus in every day math but it strengthens your brain. You don't use "video game skills" in every day life but it still can improve other skills.

Playing most types of games helps with reflexes, dexterity and hand eye coordination. It personally helped me a lot. Also Witcher is a similar game to Cyberpunk in that you choose what to say in conversations, as most RPGs or role playing games are, and those choices reflect the game state. So depending on what you choose your character to be like, your game will be different. For example in Witcher you can play as a really nice Geralt, or you can be an asshole, and the game will change accordingly. There are a lot of other choices too, regarding romance, quests, friendships, family, politics etc.

This is probably a bit late, but the question about interchangeable skills is one I can field. I'm an emergency dispatcher (police/fire/ambulance), and there are numerous studies done on how our brains work as we cope with what sometimes are immense workloads. We move units around based on their capabilities and strengths without really thinking about it on a deeper level, however one of the executives of the company that contracts us mentioned most of their best operators are young men in their late 20s to early 30s - finding that games like age of empires and starcraft we played as kids trained our minds to think a certain way. These studies discovered that the subconscious thought patterns between these strategy games and emergency operations are almost identical.

Even knowing it was going to happen, Jackie dying made me tear up. This isn't the actual cut scene though - it is all first person. And V isn't such a dumbass. They made the setup to it (Jackie talking about how his mom and GF worry about him before, for example), and that whole mission and it's consequences incredibly emotional. Brutally well done. I don't often get emotional in games. I find it cool that his GF Misty turns out to actually be a really important mentor character in V's story too. Using mantis blades in first person makes me wonder if I'm becoming a cyberpsycho. It looks intense here, but in-game everything is first person and feels 10x as savage. At first, I'd cut through a half dozen folks trying to shoot me as I make mincemeat of them, and then feel like I need to do the next mission with all non-lethal takedowns. Then somewhere along the way, it stopped bothering me. I'm pretty sure that's a bad thing. You can hack other people's cyberware too. You have a computer in your head, and depending on the type and what programs you have installed on it, you can do all kinds of stuff.

Cyberpunk is a relatively old genre both in books (like william gibson) and movies (blade runner). Cyperpunk 2077 (the game) is based on a pretty old tabletop game that was created during 1980´s. Its about a dystopian future where people enhance their skills with body modifications while most normal people struggle to survive in the grip of big corporations that have taken over the world.

To answer your question; being a gamer has definitely helped in my professional life in terms of learning new systems quickly, data analytics, micromanagement, process management, and how to learn via trial and error. The more complex the game is the more it will teach these skills to others, so I wouldn't say you get as much out of it playing Mario vs. Train Tycoon 56 (even though Mario is way more fun).

Hannah to your question about skills for absorption. Remember that the videos you are watching are really more geared as a movie action trailer to get you excited about the story. In the game or in any other software, what you are more talking about is something like a UIX developer. That’s a User Interface Experience person. They develop what the gamers interface will look and feel like and how intuitive it will be for the user. The intent there is to make it as easy to understand by the user with zero to little introduction while still providing all the functionality for the game whether complex or simple mechanics. The UI is pretty good in Cyberpunk given how complex your abilities are and the art feel of it is amazing. Unless you are selecting or configuring something before you hit some action, the UI is really out of your way to leave you immersed in the story and what you are watching are not cutscenes, but in game mechanics. The system takes over your character along with the non-player entities to do story elements, but it’s all actual in game. One of the most beautiful games around.

Yes there are many applications for the skills developed from playing videogames. Fast paced videogames, such as DOOM for example, can influence the development of quick problem solving skills and increased reaction times. Being able to take in and process information and patterns in seconds is extremely useful when an individual can learn to apply themselves to a task at the same levels they do with casual or competitive gaming. The key phrase here is "apply themselves" as an individual who doesn't care enough about a particular task, will not perform at their full potential. The major reason people react and process information so quickly while gaming, is primarily due to their enjoyment acting as a constant incentive to perform at their best.

Of course people usually want to make a character like themselves but roleplaying as another person is so much better. I was roleplaying as a hot, sassy and ruthless corporate mistress who got kick out of the company cuz of office politic. every times a choice happened I would choose what stay true to character. My favorite dialogue so far was when I break in a luxury hotel for a heist and has to stall by talking to the receptionist lady. I was like "ok I will complain and be a little bit sassy about it". When she spoke the line I was shocked and laughing at the same time like "Oh my god V, STOP!!! the poor lady's gonna cry"😂

Hey, you asked does playing video games have any marketable skills in the real world? Absolutely. Just depends on what games interest you. Driving sims: better understanding of different car makes and how to drive. This is different from racing games, as driving sims will simulate real life cars as much as possible. Real Time Strategy: Gives you a sense of strategy, logistics, and management. Games like Cities: Skylines havr you managing the road networks, utility lines, real estate, etc. Shooters: Hand Eye coordination, as well as better silent cooperation and microtactics. Microtactics being able to think atleast one move ahead of enemies. Story: teaches morality and philosophy. Unlike books and movies, games have you making decisions yourself, so you can connect more to feelings of loss, guilt, empathy, and right and wrong. Puzzle: I shouldn't have to explain the benefits of this one. There are more but ill end things here. Just remember that games are art and they can teach us a great deal. Just gotta know how to descern gaming picassos and leonardos from the ikea art lol

10:54 (IMO) A big part of what overwhelm new players is the effort to figure out what is and how it works what appears on the screen. Once you have spend a reasonable amount of time with genera of video game, you learn what those "symbols" means, how they work and, when there are too many, which ones disregard safely. At some point it stops from being overwhelming to start to be expected input to carry yourself with in the game. Our brains are malleable like that. In the same fashion, is surprising how quick you stop thinking "I'll press the button so the character moves forward" and start thinking instead "I'll move forward" forgetting your hands are involved in the process at all. This "automation" can be truly annoying when you switch between games with different control schemes.

Indeed, and you start to notice that some configurations of button make more "sense" to you. And even if you don't "get" a game initially (maybe it's a completely new type of game you're trying out, or maybe you're a complete newbie at games in general) trust me when I say that adapting and learning a new set of buttons fairly quickly becomes really easy. A thing of maybe 30 minutes tops for getting the precise feel for a whole new game and never thinking about which button you are pressing ever again. Everyone tends to develop preffered settings for controls they use with time, but there's certainly a pattern we learn from all games in general. Movement and camera are things you'll learn once, and when you get the hang of it you'll never need explained to you again. It works the same in basically any game, with maybe one twist now and then thrown in that you take maybe ten seconds to process. The same can be said for how game interfaces work. So there's actually a shared visual and motor language that everyone that plays for a while instantly recognizes when they look at the screen. Pick it up how to do it once, and you know exacly what to look for the next time you find yourself in a situation even remotely close to it. It's not that games are "alike", but more like in the sense that you get used to analizing what you see procedually. Like how you know how to read a comic because it follows the same rules of how we read anything else: left to right, top to bottom. A few panels might be exceptions, but your brain sorts them quickly no? But... Sometimes there's such things like "badly planned game controls/controllers", when two important buttons can't be triggered consistently when you need them. For example, imagine there are two buttons just slightly apart from each other, but you need to press them at the same time *solely* with your right thumb. Placing your thumb slightly unevenly over them and pressing down might cause you to sometimes activate only one of the buttons, thus making you input the wrong action in game. Make the action that requires said double button press important to master in order to progress in the game, and voilá: you have a recipe for disaster. It would make much more sense if those two buttons could be pressed by different fingers altogether, right? So it's important, to avoid accidental hiccups, that every button function and hardware can be swapped around freely. Is the controller that you have at home clunky? Are you more confotable with a keyboard? Feel like playing the game on a dance step mat? Be my guest.

I just played through that scene with the "buddy" dying. And it hit me harder then I though it would, considering, I've seen this trailer 100 times. But I got very emotional. Guess its because we get so "into" our characters its almost as we are there. And the scenes after that one...is even worse. #NoSpoilers Yes! The problem about your question, if there are marketable skills or not is, there are so many different kinds of games, all using different skills. Some are about processing information quickly, making decisions under pressure, managing ressources, leading people. So, considering different games use different skills, my answer would be, yes, depending on what you play, there are skills that are useful outside of games.

I don't know about being strictly "marketable", but back in 2011 there was a story going around about how some scientists from the university washington or something like that got a handful of gamers to solve a HIV enzyme that had stumped them for 15 years in just 3 weeks by turning it into a video game. There was also a rumor going around in my high school around that same time that the military was becoming interested in gamers for piloting drones or some shit. I know some of their EOD tech is controlled with XBOX controllers, but not much else about it.

Hey Hannah, i know this comment is 2 years too late but i figured id let you know regardless that cyberpunk 2077 is hugely inspired by Neuromancer a novel by william Gibson. Neuromancer is basically the bible for the cyberpunk genre in which many ideas and even lingo originated from, part of why lots of fans gravitated towards cyberpunk 2077 is because it basically mashed all the ideas of the cyberpunk genre from books to movies into one cohesive game. Also, "corpo" is just short for corporations :)

All three of us were much faster at leaning to navigate inside the program we used to draw 2d and 3d objects, because we were used to figuring out how to control a new program and adapt a streamlined work flow, we also were the only ones looking into the details of the problem and what other shortcuts there are instead of sticking to the book, after e years we were drawing a complex project in about half an hour instead of 3,5 hours. It was a fun time for me and after all these years (2008-2012) we still are in contact because of that bond we build up very early on My brother who is also a gamer is studying IT and theae kinds of classes are full of gamers

I don't know if gamers are _generally_ recognized as having marketable skills because they play games -- that said, I do remember one example of using gamers' skills to do real work. In 2010/2011 biology researchers outsourced some of their research to gamers with a web-based game called "foldit". The goal was to learn how proteins fold/unfold in order to better understand diseases that arise from improperly folded proteins, but the scientists didn't have the time/resources to figure all of the proteins out themselves. So they made Foldit, told gamers the basic rules, & provided them with 3d models of proteins to play around with. Apparently it was at least somewhat successful. there is very little research on how video games can improve your other skills I guess, but gamers are good at spatial awareness and reaction times. It is true, often you are really overwhelmed by games at first, but you grow into it, take on step at a time. Most games also have tutorials that show you the mechanics and teach you before you get into the main game. Nowadays that is almost all the time seamlessly integrated into games. I don't think the skills are good for anything beyond gaming for the most part though. For example, you can be a pro at a game like star craft, having a lot of APM (actions per minute) and key strokes, but that doesn't necessarily translate into being a good typist or a great military strategist in real life lol. SO I think there are definitely some skillsets you might benefit from, but they would have to be very specialized or closely related to the actual stuff you do in games. I mean soldiers also were trained for flying drones in games I think (correct me if I am wrong on that).

11:00 - While I don't know if it's directly related to being a lifelong gamer, I do know that, by their own admission, I am a much faster learner than either of my parents and I think that constantly adapting to new experiences through both gaming and my time as an Army brat likely have a lot to do with that. Growing up as a gamer steered me towards an IT career path and was why I took up coding as a hobby and ultimately became a network engineer. The industry I'm in changes a lot and while this is purely anecdotal, I know that my coworkers that are fellow gamers also tend to be the faster ones to adapt whenever we have new technology applied to the network. So... is it a marketable skill? Not so much, but it does seem to help in roles where adaptability and problem solving are at a premium, as our hobby required us to develop a similar mental skillset.

Nice reaction once again Hannah. For your question about the skills video games translate to the real world I will list some. (There are videos that go into detail about what I'm about to say on youtube) Action Videos like Cyberpunk 2077 have many benefits for health five of them listed below there are many more. 1. They improve Vision and can fix vision issues. Action gamers ability to discern between different shades of grey is better than non-action gamers plus research shows action video games can treat lazy eye. 2. Improves the brain's speed in studies action gamers make choices about 25% faster than non-action gamers. 3. Improves attention and concentration action video games take a lot of attention and focus of the player plus some research points to attention difficulties as being a key component of dyslexia which can help dyslexics improved their reading comprehension. 4. Video games reduce stress levels A study tracked players over six months and measured heart rate found that certain titles reduced the adrenaline response by over 50 percent and studies have shown (but still needs more research that they can be a treatment for depression and PTSD as well as other mental health issues. 5. Video Games Improve memory because video games require both visual and audial memory. The player is required to read or listen to the instructions which might only be provided at the beginning of the game, thus the need to remember them throughout the entire game.

Gaming has no marketable benefits, similar to exercise, unless you want to go into something very specific like martial arts or sports. Exercise can still be beneficial in everyday life. In the same vain, gaming can enhance hand-to-eye coordination, reaction times, critical and creative thinking, problem solving, and even improve social and leadership skills. Gaming, just like exercise, can also help with a variety of psychological issues. Can you gain any marketable skill from general gaming, though? Not really, unless you want to become a professional esports athlete; Combining gaming with another trade like journalism, entertainment, education, or shoutcasting (there's a good video by theScore Esports) is probably most people's best bet to monetize gaming.
