edit: the title has been now changed bc people are upset over russia not being in europe. this is an age-old question we could discuss for hours, and end up in different answers depending on how we would approach it, cultural historically, politically, geographically and so on. you are obviously welcome to keep discussing this, but to bring some peace to all i have now changed the title from european to non-north american. thank you for your co-operation.
i find these facinating, hope you enjoy too!
0:00 Frederik Andersen (Danish)
- I have been later informed he speaks fluent Swedish as well but I couldn't find a video!
0:20 Jesper Fast (Swedish)
0:36 Andrei Svechnikov (Russian)
0:58 Nino Niederreiter (German)
- NOTE! I was under the impression that the German spoken in Switzerland is German. Apparently it's so different it might as well be another language. I was not aware of this, and didn't specify, I just figured it was a very strong accent. Pardon to those offended.
1:22 Martin Nečas (Czech)
1:50 Jesperi Kotkaniemi (Finnish)
2:10 Teuvo Teräväinen (Finnish)
2:36 Sebastian Aho (Finnish)
- NOTE! Sebastian was actually born in city of Rauma but moved to Oulu when he was two months old and by watching a lot of his interviews, I've come to understand he considers himself to be Oulu native. Since this video is also about languages and he also speaks in Oulu dialect, I chose to put Oulu as his hometown here though factually it would be Rauma. Sorry for the confusion!

Nečas speaks with such typical Czech hockey player dialect. He has none of the accent of his home region and he sounds exactly like the hockey kid from my town that I lectured maths in high school. Other side of the country. Almost all of the national league player interviews sound like that as well. Mouth slightly open, entire long sentences done in one long exhale, words sort of slurred and pauses replaced by the neutral "aaaaah" sound. If someone talks this way, you ask them what team they play for.

@@epiphanyjin3516 As an original Swiss, I can tell you that you did nothing wrong. The official language is German (Swiss Standard German). However, we Swiss speak Swiss German among ourselves, which is a dialect family of Alemannic. These dialects are often hard to understand by standard speakers, but do NOT form a language of their own. As Swiss German is NOT a language of its own only a summary of German dialects which are very different from Standard German, this will confirm any linguist.

@ReinhardP
@ReinhardP 2 жыл бұрын
@@rudde7918We're getting rather specific here. High German has two meanings: when referenced to writing it relates to the spelling and vocabulary of the German language. There three kinds of High German in this definition: Federal German, Austrian and Swiss High German. When referenced to speaking High German: High German is spoken south of the "Benrath line", which roughly runs through Posen, Berlin, Magdeburg, Kassel, Cologne and Aachen. So, the Swiss dialects are part of the High German group, which shows the big variety of how German is spoken in these region below the Beneath line. I think I'd be more accurate to cut down further a level where the spoken High German is roughly divided into East and West Central German, East and West Frankonian, Allemannic (that's where the Swiss dialects are located) and Bavarian. So to summise and give an opinion: German dialects have a large variety, whereas some dialects are "closer" to the written language than others. I'd say that no German speaker actually speaks the language as strictly as it is written (and in comparison to English, it is rather easy to pronounce German word correctly when reading them). PS: Well, this answer got out of hand a little bit.
