I'll tell you what I tell anyone: One Piece is not a sprint, nor is it the IRS that requires you to be caught up on it. It is a marathon you will walk at your own pace for your own enjoyment. You can take breaks - many people do! - and come back when you are in the mood for more. It sounds crazy to you, but its length is its STRENGTH. It will take you 'forever' to 'catch up' to all the weekly hype that washes over the internet on a weekly basis.. but that is totally fine because you'll lack all of the context and build-up! (What would be the point of starting to watch Lord of the Rings at the ending where Sam is carrying Frodo up Mount Doom? The same applies here!) You may think early One Piece is dated, and sure, its animation is old if it is the anime you are consuming it by. But the story is timeless. It starts out utterly simple with a stupid kid in a straw hat struggling to start his own pirate crew, so most people think it is a simple story... but that is just because it is a long story. Its first 50 episodes or 100 chapters can be roughly considered to be its prologue, or for the gamer-minded: the tutorial of this world. It is simple. It is safe. It teaches the basics of the world and lets you know the baseline of its common sensical insanity so that when things happen later in the story, you can truly understand them for being as crazy in form and scale as they are. That way, when you reach the thousandth chapter or episode, you will have been able to see this little pirate crew grow into a tightknit group of idiots whose might is only second to their infamy. The long journey where you bond with the world and its many colorful individuals is where 90% of the beauty of One Piece can be found, and that is what this particular video does its best to show off without giving any meaningful story spoilers.

by episode 4 or 5, there’s a mini flashback for a dog, owner and their pet shop. from then i understood what kind of series this was gonna be 😭 oh it’ll make the time. for every single character they have 🤣🤣🤣 i’ve cried so many times at different characters backstories. that shit hits hard man ! i started last september and i’m 450 episodes in now 🤭 hooked

3:20 While I won't go to the unbelievable extreme of 'you will care for every character', because nobody likes every character, I can confidently say that most characters are memorable for their own reasons. Sometimes they are minor and it is just because they have a silly character design, but any character of even middling importance tends to be very unique and likable in terms of personality, goals and relationships. Even though it might look like it early on, nothing in One Piece exists in a vacuum, and time continues to move on. For the manga, he'll use the front pages of chapters to show what characters from arcs gone by are up to, and for quite a few fans, those are just as highly anticipated as the contents of the actual chapter itself. Even if you do not remember a characters name, you will manage to recognize them and what makes them special. But in general, Oda is a master of heartstrings. There are some dumb-as-hell characters in One Piece that you shouldn't like, and you'll be their biggest damn fanboy by the time you find out what they are truly like. You will laugh and celebrate just as you will cry and grieve.

The ship has a kind of compressed air propulsion at the stern, together with the shape of the hull it catapults the ship into the air. It flies straight out for a bit and then comes down again.
