FLIGHT CHOPS DISCLAIMER:
I am a "weekend warrior" private pilot, I fly for fun with no intentions of going commercial. I have had my PPL for over 15 years, but still consider each flight a learning experience - I generally take detailed notes after each flight to remind myself what went well or what I could do to improve.... Having the GoPro cameras to record flights like this is invaluable. I find these self analysis videos very helpful in my constant quest to improve, and am happy to share. Feedback is invited; however, please keep it positive.

I'm not a pilot and I landed a 747 5 times successfully in my local simulator, with little help each time. I went back a couple months later, did a full flight from SLC Ut, to Saint George Ut, with just co-pilot instructions. Flying an airplane is not comparable at all to designing a nuclear reactor. Anybody can fly an airplane with practice, and minimal instruction. Nobody can practice designing a nuclear reactor without first studying and understanding key maths concepts and formulas. No formulas to flying a plane, unless you want to get really far into it.

I have a 9 year old who is obsessed with planes and has watched every video on planes he can get access to. For his birthday last week I booked him in to pilot a 1hr Boeing 737 simulator and he landed successfully 3 times.he even pulled off a touch and go. Kid could barely see over the flight panel but I doubt I could have flown the thing with half the ease. This was so entertaining to watch and oh so chaotic.

Oh, I got to play with a 737 D sim for a few hours. Hands down the single most fun thing I've ever done. Highlights: 1. Actually landed decently (although it started me on final approach, all I had to do was follow the ILS and flare) 2. Completely messing up my dad's turn by ""helping"" him with the trim 3. Forgetting I was in a sim and steering clear of a giant storm 4. Instructor meant to kill an engine but instead ripped it off 5. In the aftermath of #4 I had no hydraulics and the yoke felt like it was stuck in concrete (still flyable though!) 6. Trying to land with aforementioned hydraulic failure (and failing miserably) 7. Popping a tire on touchdown and having my phone rattle off the instrument panel

Jameson Shockley ... Nice. I'm actually really good in FSX and X-Plane 10 doing landings from the cockpit view. I can even handle doing VFR flights and ILS landings. I'd be thrilled if someone offered me a chance to put that to a test in a real simulator. That said, I'd imagine being used to just hitting mapped keys on the keyboard wouldn't help when looking for a little switch on those very crowded consoles.

I don't remember where I saw it, but there was a magazine years ago that pitted real F-16 pilots against the best flight simulator pilots in a simulated dogfight and they fought pretty much to a draw. Now, I know that means nothing as a simulator is not the same as a real plane (no G forces, for one thing) but still pretty cool that gamers could hold their own in any such event. Mind you, these were gamers who were the best at their 'craft' and it was conducted using the game in which they'd played thousands of hours.
@Kopihucky

some "simulators" are far from "games"
@MrDlt123
@MrDlt123 7 жыл бұрын
Kopihucky True, but I believe the flight sim they used is was a COTS game, so in this case, the 'simulator' used was a bit closer to a game than a million dollar Air Force flight simulator, which is why you really can't infer anything from the results of the aforementioned contest. I'll have to research where I read about that contest, but was probably a decade ago.

I was more referring to sims that are available for users now. DCS for example. The only sim I know that models random bird strikes for example. While somethings are a game.. like FSX others have serious flight models, systems and avionics.

I know it's not an airliner, but one year during the Berlin air show I got the opportunity to try out a Eurofighter simulator. Everyone in the queue in front of me just flew the thing in circles, but when I got in I flew around until I saw a runway and headed right for it. The instructor was German and only knew basic English, but he caught on right away what I was going to try and with some basic instructions I managed to land it, smoothly. I was 14 and had never flown anything before, never even played a flight simulator game. I was so proud of myself :)

I've been on this simulator. Very funny. I actually saw a 12 year old boy landing without any problem. He said his Dad was a pilot and he had been playing Microsoft flight simulator since he was 10. Anyone who plays Microsoft Flight Simulator for a few months will be able to land on a large simulator with the proper instructions and 2 or 3 training flights. This generation is learning in 2 years what took the previous generation 5 years to learn. The difficult about flying is to learn how the systems work on the airplane and what to do when they are not working. Than you need a few years of training and experience. The youngest co-pilot at Ryan Air is just 19 years old and is doing a great job.

right^^ it takes years to learn proper emergency related stuff and stay calm... a random guy would freak out when their stabillizer is jammed and plane goes to a nose dive... well alaskan airline crashed yet they did stay kinda calm and tried their best to safe the plane^^ but pilots make also mistakes like in the Helios accident where they tech crew did set cabin pressure to manual for some test and they didnt set it back up and they did not get it....

Yep. Flight sims and the roleplaying that goes with it are creating real jobs. I read a comment the other day about someone who joined VATSIM and started doing ATC as a hobby, and some time later he turned it into a full time job. The resources we have available to us in this day and age compared to what older generations had is absolutely invaluable to the education process.

You could not. I'm a VFR pilot with hundreds of hours in my logbook and I tried an identical simulator once. Just barely managed to land the plane/SIM with the assistance of a helpful SIM instructor next to me. The mental workload for an unexperienced wannabe pilot is just too high. Despite my previous training, I overshot the assigned altitude by a thousand feet in a blink of an eye.

+ZloTip Exactly .. the difficult part would be to land it and if the runway have ILS, could do an auto-land .. but to bring the plane to the runway sigh , i would just have to let the AP, call the tower and ask for HDG, speed,.. Any way that is just a dream.. We are allowed to dream luckily lol. I m convice myself that it is possible .. May be not me but it is possible.

The graphics look like it. However the big difference is in the simulation of the airplane. The companys have all the real world performance data and design the plane models with it, which brings it much closer to reality. The typical sim will use ballpark figues for most of the stuff instead.

Most likely, this is fully custom software designed specifically for this sim company. Something like FSX would be way too graphically intensive for a computer like that to power, same with any Microsoft FS product, but they're also inaccurate as far as the flight model goes, especially with wind changes and turbulence, which makes for a poor experience seeing as you've got this fancy sim that flies nothing like a real plane.. (I have never flown a real plane, I just got this information from what I've heard from actual pilots about the accuracy of sims.)

I've been lucky enough to find my way into a company that supports 10 of them for a Navy training facility. I have access to them pretty much anytime the training schedule allows. Sure does make going home to play FSX seem pretty pointless. Equally impressive is the amount of technology it takes to run one of these sims. Literally rooms full of servers for each one.
