#284: Superior labral lesions, or SLAP lesions, are common. In fact, they may be more common in asymptomatic people than we think.
Surgery to repair these labral tears can often over-constrain the joint and lead to loss of motion, so it is often used as a last resort.
Here are some tips for how to treat SLAP tears without surgery.

Great advice. I've been dealing with shoulder impingement related issues for over a year (may or may not be SLAP related). I only recently decided to stop crossfit and try something different. I'm a stubborn patient that didn't want to pause on crossfit and go back to "traditional" solo gym training. But what I'm realizing is that targeted strengthening IS needed. Hard to hear and accept but I'm using this time to focus on getting stronger via personal training and then hopefully head back progressively to crossfit. Here's hoping!

How are you doing now

@Briizo Doing much better! Ultrasound showed a partial tear in the supraspinatus. Patience + mobility and strength training was the right combo. Not 100% but on the right path. I highly recommend working with a good personal trainer that has experience with rehab and can monitor your progress (weekly in my case). That made the difference for me.

@@RahimKaba okay so it wasent a slap tear than, you dodged a bullet I think... hopefully your labrum is good. Im suspicious I have a slap tear and honestly im drowning in so much anxiety, regret and stress that I can barely eat... I really regret starting to lift.. Feel absolutely defeated if I have to add this to my injury list. Which its looking like I will. Thanks for the response and take care.

@Briizo Sorry to hear that. Injuries like this can take a toll. I'm on the upside of it, but was on the downside of it for over a year, and it was tough across so many dimensions. In addition to having a fantastic personal trainer the last few months, a book that helped me get through it was "Built From Broken" by Scott Hogan. It's all about getting through injuries and gave me hope. Wishing you all the best.

I was doing supersets between close-grip bench presses and barbell bicep curls. During the last set of my barbell curls, at the top of the concentric movement (barbell is curled up towards my shoulders), I experienced a rapid vertical subluxation in my left shoulder. I think it was either my AC joint or shoulder itself - but it happened so fast I' not quite sure which. It was a very rapid pop-up and right back down. Only kind of painful, strangely not too bad, but more totally spooky, and I instantly lost control of the ar and dropped the barbell onto the ground. Since then my shoulder has felt unstable for the last 2 weeks and I have some pain in my rotator cuff muscles. I'm nervous it's a tear. Have you ever seen a bicep curl CAUSE a sudden tear? Or is it likely I had the tear developing already and perhaps the load of a curl could cause a subluxation? Everyone always talks about overhead athletes and throwing athletes and slap tears. I only do conventional strength training.

Hello, I am currently student working on my bachelors in exercise and sports science, I aspire to have a career in sports medicine. I know there are a lot of different paths to take during post graduate studies. Do you see any value in obtaining both a masters in athletic training and doctorate in physical therapy? Is there any sort of career or opportunity that would utilize both?

I have a 270 degree labral tear extending from the 12:00 to 9:00 positions with sparing of the posterosuperior quadrant. Additionally, There is a small high-grade partial-thickness articular surface tear of the anterior insertional supraspinatus fibers measuring 4.5 mm in AP dimension and involving 90 % of tendon thickness. My doc says to do PT But Ive been in pain for three months. Is surgery the best option- I'm starting a new job in May and I want to get back to playing volleyball at maximum capacity!

How is it going now? I have slap tear form 11 to 3 and intestinal tear of supraspinatus. My report does not tell me the size of the supraspinatus tear. What did the doc say about your supra tear?

@@batman-sr2px my doctor says that I don’t need surgery because my shoulder is stabilized in the pocket. I have about 70% of my movement back and I’m still super weak. I’m back to playing volleyball but it hurts after I hit the ball once or twice. Pretty much done, I cannot set the ball one arm seems a bit longer than the other. I guess it’s going! Lol

Maybe get to the point quicker instead of introducing everybody on the screen as you have about three seconds to capture your audience attention .I work for a TV show with 1 million viewers I hope this helps you guys furthermore you’re not really giving any alternatives to surgery such as PRP, prolotherapy, stem cells or less invasive surgical procedures such as a shoulder balloon implant or laser repair.
