A labral tear does not necessarily mean the end of going overhead. It does mean getting more specific about where the stability is going to come from.

This is a great video and gives me a really positive insight about what at times feels like a hopeless situation. That you can come back from this injury. I had exactly this journey. Small SLAP tear diagnosis about 15 years ago from years of gymnastics and circus training and generally not listening to my body. I even had surgery booked but then changed my mind about it at the last minute and I’m glad that I did. I got full function back in the months and years that followed and even went back to gymnastics training at age 38. I’ve had a few flair ups over the years when I have pushed the stability and function of my shoulder beyond its capacity but what I have been able to achieve with careful programming and prehab excercises has been quite surprising. I’m in a flare up stage at the moment - probably the worst I’ve had in a while. I still have ROM but back to doing rehab with no gym due to Bursitis - from having an unstable shoulder. This video has given me confidence that I can get back to full function with a but of time and patience… So I guess to anyone who is feeling like there’s no way out, there definitely is. Just need to find the right approach. 😊

Really appreciate this conversation! I’m in that boat - labral tear but surgery not recommended at this time... (After getting it repaired several years back from a separate injury.) I was doing band exercises for a long while in addition to body weight and a mix of other fitness endeavors. The past two months I’ve found that CrossFit (while listening to my body) has strengthened by body in areas that have helped my shoulder tremendously. Thank you so much for this video!!!! 🙏 You guys are awesome!!! 💪💪

I tore my labrum about 3 years ago boxing by hyper extending a right cross dislocating it. Ever since then my shoulders stability went to shit. I decided to start wrestling my junior year which basically fucked the hell out my shoulder, on top of that I thought I was David Goggins or some thing so I boxed right after a long wrestling practice which made it even worse resulting in me tearing my left labrum, It didn’t dislocate as much as the other one so I didn’t think it was a big deal so I just kept pushing forward. My right shoulder got so bad I eventually had to get surgery which was worth it in the long run but lead me in to a deep depression because of how isolated I was not being able to actually ever compete in boxing. It’s been 5 months since the surgery on my right shoulder and I’m slowly rebuilding my arm. Today I was practicing wrestling at my local gym which lead to my left shoulder dislocating. I’m not sure if I should continue my hobbies and get another surgery when ever or get the surgery now and start the rigorous long process again.

When you were talking about the pain in the front of the shoulder and the position where it kind of dumps forward, that seems like what happens whenever I try dips. I dislocated my shoulder as a teenager playing basketball and tore the labrum and subscapularis tendon. I can bench press and overhead press fine, but it seems like a lot of the really strong bench pressers are good at dips. Is there any way you could modify dips or progress to them without irritating the shoulder? Or is it not really worth it considering I can do all the other movements fine without pain?

I cant do weighted squats or deadlifts things that are good to train for kickers. would you advise getting surgery for this injury while i am young? this might not be your specialty but please let me know your opinion? the docter said it is a very slight tear and he wants to avoid surgery as much as possible, except that i want kick in college and need to know if the surgery is worth it or if i should just continue pushing through?

I know it’s a late response idk what u have decided but I’m a senior too. I’m going through same shit and have been advised to get the surgery while we r young and can heal quick. The older we get the longer and more detrimental the recovery is. A labrum tear can’t heal on its own it will only statement or get worse depending how severe it is. Mine would not get better after 3 years of living with it and came to the point it was ruining my quality of life. Get the surgery.

@ridingronin3957
@ridingronin3957 Жыл бұрын
@@HeyIntegrity I am not a doctor, but I was told by my physio that SLAP tears are mostly caused by muscle tightness around the area and a force applied to the joint. So scap was really tight especially in the interior side of it, close to the spine. Stretching it and rolling it out every day helped my shoulder pain massively as well. Agian it was my case only, so I don't want people to follow that without consulting doctors. However, if you are not happy with your current doctor, there is always an option for second opinion elsewhere right.

Last friday I fell on my shoulder after slipping...went to ER xray was fine, awaiting mri now in a few days. Spoke to ortho on phone who believes labrum tear. I've had occasional soreness but not terrible...worst issue is instability. I keep it mostly in a sling but very simple movements can make it feel like its going to pop out (like straightening arm and swaying gentle circles). Hard to say if stability has improved since friday...maybe slightly as in the beginning it would feel more unstable even in sling. My question: can stability get back to normal without surgery? I dont lift weights or play sports anymore now at 44 years old.

Speaking from experience. Popped out both my shoulders around 12 years old (21 now) never got them looked at so they never healed properly. Overall strength of my shoulders are amazing I bench 350 and overhead press 265. Stability is the worse. No matter how strong I get my shoulders, the stability I have behind my scapular plane is terrible. I wake up in the morning to stretch it pops. Some times if I sneeze with my arms in a certain position it pops. When it pops I’m able to pop it back in within seconds since over been going through this all my life and after a few days of soreness it’s back to “normal”. Thinking about when to get my surgery just need to plan it.
@steezy3185

You might think that I’m rlly strong so who cares about stability. The reason is because my strength doesn’t translate to real life situations. I’ve been in multiple bar fights and almost ever time I throw out my shoulder on the first punch. Sure I’m no fighter but I know my shoulder shouldn’t be doing that and yes I’ll admit that I’m insecure about my ability to defend myself and my girlfriend, which is the main reason I want surgery.

Ah fuck sounds terrible. I also tore my right shoulder labrum in bench press in 2016, I managed to continue without any surgeries. And in last january I tore my left shoulder labrum with a fucking shoulder warmup movement! It was quite bad and had to take 3 months off everything, but slowly cameback and I've been able to workout without any pain for 6 months now but yesterday for some reason did some overhead tricep extensions and now my left shoulder in fucking done, I don't know if I re teared it or what. I was a swimmer back in the day so maybe that has effected my shoulder durability? Idk but fucking frustrating, I enjoy the gym lifestyle so much and can't think about life without it. Hopefully this is some minor setback and I still can train hard but smart in the future... but good luck for you!

Like you I have torn labrum’s in both of my shoulders and my biggest hobby is going to the gym. I can lift pretty heavy as long as I keep my form. Bench is 365 overhead press is 275 right now so regardless of my instability my form takes care of it. Luckily for me weight training is pretty static as compared to wrestling or boxing especially when it comes to the shoulders so I’ve been able to get away with not having the surgery. Trust me I understand how depressing it is not be able to enjoy the things you love because I haven’t been able to swing my arms in any sport for the past 6 years which is why the gym is what I live for. I’d say u should go for the surgery especially since your first one healed so well. You only get one body and if you’re like me and want to continue these hobbies for a while then get the surgery. Yes the time off is mentally draining but It’ll be a bittersweet moment once you reach the level you were preop except that both your shoulders are rock solid and you don’t need to worry about them anymore. These are just my thoughts.
