Click "Show More" for links to everything in the video.
Our nonverbal autistic daughter uses apps on iPad and Android tablets to communicate her wants and needs. It has been life changing for us and helped with a great deal of her anxiety and frustration from not being able to communicate. There are a ton of nonverbal communication apps and autism apps available in the app store. Here are some of our favorites, the devices she has used, and the cases we protect them with.

For IOS, you can put them on "Guided Mode" so the kids cannot get out of the app in question. I hope that helps.

I just came across this video and I'm so glad I did. My son has autism and he's 3 and non verbal. They have used iPad communication apps with him in his therapy and I didn't know what it was. You have solved that problem.. sounding board . I set it up to try and practice using it. He has an android tablet himself so I might have to check out the other app as well!

This was very helpful, not only does my daughter have ASD she has a two types of rare epilepsy, one in which focals in her temporal lobe effecting her ability to speak and understand speech. She goes through spurts of poor language to non-verbal to barely understandable speech but able to patch work what she is saying. I was searching for recommended apps and your video came up. I was grateful that it helped and made this less stressful.

I am a sped Ed teacher in a nonprofit school, I’m sure similar to A’s, I use LAMP Word For Life with all my kiddos! It’s all about muscle memory and can be used through adult!!! Samsung seems to be the most durable for my kiddos, or an iPad in an otter box.

Also, make sure the communication device is for the sole purpose of communication only, Samsung locks it in to LAMP

I have Autism, epilepsy and depression and I used a few apps online and a few apps on my tablet to help me communicate so one day I got so mad I broke my iPad and it was not usable anymore so now I use a book to help me talk when I get overstimulated I turn nonverbal. My current communication book comes from Etsy.com and you can get it for 50-54 dollars with or without shipping costs.

Great info - thank you! This is my first time seeing your channel - and I also had to laugh at the hulk smash term - I have an 8 year old daughter with autism and, though she's been better lately, she absolutely 'hulk smashes/hulks out' at times - can totes relate:) My girl is partially verbal -but not to the level where she can truly express what she wants/is feeling -so these apps will be great for her- thank you again!

I use my Android AAC device only if I need to. My Android tablet is not an AC device but I only need an AAC device if I have a performance because I am the musician that is blind and Autistic or if I have Behavior issue or I am really anxious to the point where I can't talk and become completely non-verbal. The app that I use is called Speech assistant AAC. It works kind of similar to the dynavox in that you can type what you want and save it on certain buttons or like proloquo2go which is basically the same thing. It also has pre done freezes if need be. It is a great communication app and I highly recommend it. I really Like this communication app a lot. The tablet I used to communicate is a Samsung Galaxy Tab a. It is a very good tablet for what it is and the type of case I use is one that flips open and you can just use it while it's in the case. It flips open kind of like a book. That works perfectly for me for the program that I'm in because when I go to my program everyday we are out in the community A lot. We're out almost all the time. That really works for somebody who's really active. My recommendation for you would be to the flip open case that I've seen for tablets say Rubberized case. And this was at Walmart. This is back when I had the Samsung Galaxy Tab a 2015 which was is 7 in. It would only fit into an iPad case. either an iPad case or into certain Universal cases. It wouldn't fit correctly into a regular Android Special made case. Those box kind of cases are not good for me because of my motor skill problems and my autism affects me different because of my motor delays. I understand Abby has issues like that as well, but with me it causes me to sometimes have no control over my hand movements or body movements. That causes me to drop my tablet or phone I don't know how many times Because I have no control over my body movements. It absolutely sucks that I have a hard time finding a decent case And the cases that they have out there for autism do not work for my needs because I'm not able to put the tablet or phone or whatever in the case is independently very well. Either that or they don't work very well when you're using headphones with your tablet or phone in said case. That is why I use the ones that flip open because I use headphones a lot. I have to if I'm living in a group home with staff that insist on having me use headphones all the time. I absolutely recommend that you look into a Galaxy Tab a from Samsung because they are really good tablet. I would also recommend the type of case that flips open And you could teach a b how to close it just like a book. These kind of cases especially for my needs with motor delays and problems with hand control, Are very very good and they really protect your device. I think this case is made by Lifeworks although I could be wrong, but the one I personally recommend if you

Just ordered the ipad 128gb for my 3 year old son, needed the larger interface due to visual impairment. Now trying to find some aac apps that he can use to communicate at home and at pre school, the child minders and speech and language. Wondering if all these are suitable for someone younger, I noticed with some apps the categories are quite small type. He currently uses a communication book with pec images. He is mostly non verbal, uses a few bsl sign and maybe has less than a dozen words he rarely uses. Words he uses are mum (for everyone he wants something from), me, mine, down, crisps, yes (sound rather than word) and no.

xharmswayx1 The hard part for a lot of parents is helping the child distinguish the iPad as a communication device and a toy. Some small humans have no problem with it but others struggle. I know some that have two devices because of that. You can use a "toy" as a reinforcer and limit access to promote positive behavior but you can't do that with a communication device...does that make sense? I feel like I'm talking in circles.

There is a really good AAC app thats available for iOS (iPad/iPhone) and android. Its called talktablet and its super customisable (from one button per page to 16x16 (256)). I recommend checking it out. It costs $80 but its worth it. You can even upload your contents to their server and download it to another device (from iPad to iPad, iPad to iPhone, android tablet to iPad, etc.). Its similar to proloquo2go but much more custamisable and easier to use (plus about $200 cheaper!).

Did you say 80 bucks for an app? I'd rather do the free one otherwise I'd be bankrupt
@fatheringautism
@fatheringautism 7 жыл бұрын
+Lucy Wilson Paid apps are often worth it especially when it comes to communication. Of course to help my kid communicate and keep her from living her life in frustration I'd pay a lot more than $80. Parents have actually gone bankrupt paying for therapies and services for their children so I think $80 isn't terrible considering how much it helps.

FatheringAutism if I did have a child of autism or any illness that was non verbal I would go bankrupt but in the real world I don't have a true heart like what you do and without a child in need of an app I do find it hard to understand your normal world which I want to try to. This comment helped me learn just a tiny bit more and by the end of the year I hope I'll be more aware of your world than now😊
