@@scrandina we never see JJ go back into her saucer form before the balloon. After we hear Lucky’s cry, we can still see JJ in what I like to call her defence form. Basically, that point doesn’t work when you watch the movie

@@HypoZilla whenever a character is meeting their fate in the film, whether they live or die our view of them is obscured in some way either by a couch, a tv set, a tablecloth, a veil, dust etc. the dust cloud around OJ never dissipates, leaving his fate intentionally ambiguous! maybe watch it again

@@scrandina his fate is ambiguous, yes, but there’s enough hints to suggest he didn’t die. Jean Jacket cannot eat or kill in that form she was in. Next it was pretty much confirmed OJ survived. Trust me, Nope is one of my favourite movies.

@@HypoZilla there are hints to suggest he did die too! JJ focuses its attention on OJ's distraction long enough for its emp field to dissipate around the Ebike. JJ is shown to move its anatomy remarkably fast, in the 'mandible' balloon scene for example. Perhaps OJ got grabbed and stored in some fold of its prehensile stomach during that window of escape? I don't feel we are shown enough of the Occulonimbus to know what it can and cant do in its various forms, and from what i've seen in interviews peele is intentionally leaving things ambiguous. Basically, neither of us are the godhead dictator of nope lore lol

Yeah, I realized very quickly that the green flare was a defense mechanism. Jean Jacket was weak, and probably scared, and couldn't attack like usual due to the barbed wire.

Not only that. The notes that start playing when OJ signs to Em are the same that play while they're entering Agua Dulce and you see both the Sky Dancers and the Decoy Horse in front of Jupiter's Claim (both elements necessary to set the trap), it plays again during the sequence where they prepare the trap for Jean Jacket -- I think the proper term for it would be a leitmotif? -- but anyway, what I mean is that at that moment OJ isn't only saying "I see you", he's telling Em the Plan. They're going to trade turns glancing at it so that OJ can back away enough without being caught and Em gets out of the Anti-Electric field. At least that's what I thought. The use of the theme seemed too purposeful to just be nothing.

I think about the line “you can’t tame a predator you can only make a contract with one.” I kind of think that Oj is making one with him right now. Jean Jacket was never portrayed as evil just a predator feeding. Even when they killed jean jacket it was kind of anti climactic. It was well shot and exciting, I just felt a bit let down and I think that was the point.

​@@joefur2835 What I settled on at the end of the day is that JJ was a deadly animal that needed to be put down. Just like Gordy whom had that wholesome fist bump with Jupe before getting shot. We wish that the tender moment could be what saves the day but nah, they're vicious creatures that were a threat to human life.

Then how do you explain the horse's scream? It made the scream the other horse's made when they were getting sucked up so that should mean that he's dead and that wasn't really him at the end, just an apparition

I also think it all started when JJ tried to eat Angel but failed instead hurt himself in the process. It acted more cautious around OJ and Emerald. JJ did not attack Emerald yet as it feels threaten by her. And when OJ confronted JJ. It tried to use it's tendrils and sounds to scare OJ off. Now that there are two deemed predators is on JJ front and back. It moves slowly and cautiously like a predator aware that he is being surrounded by other predators

While I admit that Eldritch Horror is a bit unspecific, I think that's one of the things that lends to itself. In short: Eldritch Horror comes when the characters in story deal with their spot in the universe. Eldritch horror goes by the name of Cosmic horror most of the time. Think about how you would feel if a giant mouth opened up above the entire globe and slowly started to eat away at the planet. The horror you would feel knowing just how LITTLE you meant in the entire UNIVERSE let alone the world. All you are is something elses dinner. Another component of it is the essence of the unknown and how something that refuses to be known or remains outside the realm of the known can be dangerous. The idea of what something can do or how it could effect you is a deep primal fear. The equivalent of looking down a large hole and not knowing what's at the bottom Sorry my name has eldritch in it and I found it important to explain this fully so no one was confused. Itnis confusing I agree. I think its design was to be an animal that opens up to confuse its prey or enemy. I can't really think of another logical reason why and animal would fan out so wide and slowly, other than to intimidate and/or mesmerise its prey.

Normally they're compact and tight, but they can open up into these massive umbrella/wing shapes to threaten enemies and capture prey more effectively. The "eyelash" behavior is clearly a threat display or a distraction to get its prey to look at it.

He didn’t die. The horse did neigh, but horses always do that. At the end of the movie, we see OJ standing “out yonder,” perfectly fine. Also, JJ can’t eat while unfolded. When it eats the Lil’ Jupe balloon, we see it refold into the saucer form.
