Really enjoyed the concept of a person's obsession with spectacle being what can lead to their own demise. This film made me question that myself after viewing. Great video man.

OJ survived. In the movie Emerald literally shuts her eyes for a few seconds before opening them again to make sure he isn't an hallucination. Plus, Lucky is the literal luckiest horse to not have been eaten after so many attempts, a lucky horse indeed. OJ lives because of Lucky AND fits with the theme of respecting dangerous animals. Jupe dies because he took advantage and never respected the alien while OJ lives because he entirely respected (not looking at it) and did not take advantage of it.

The fact that JJ "unfurled" as a tactic to seem scarier implies there are bigger threats than it

The monster design for this movie was so good the way they used the screams of its victims as a way if signifying its presence on the sky made it so terrifying

Man, the idea of a flying saucer being the hostile celestial entity itself is all the more terrifying than it just being a ship, for real. Also bonus points that it resembled a sea urchin/jellyfish. I crave that Lovecraftian shit and Peele delivered

The people being stuck in the creature was the scariest scene for me

The fact that the UFO is actually the “alien” itself is such a brilliant idea for a twist. I’m genuinely surprised nobody else has thought to do this. Nonetheless, you have sold me on going to watch this film.

I absolutely loved Jean's design it's a breathe of fresh air in alien designs today. They're either humanoid, aliens disguised as humans or just a blob with various appendages. It was horrifying in a totally different way

Everything talks about the screams, but the kids in the alien masks were the freakiest part to me. It plays on that very deep seated fear of the unknown in the dark

The realization that the screaming sound it made was actually the people being digested proper shook me

Usually a monster loses some of its scare factor once the whole thing is revealed, but this one is the opposite; it's actually even more uncanny once you realize how it works. And the creature design in general is quite creative and interesting, having a weather balloon textured flying saucer that is actually the alien itself. Although I haven't seen the movie yet, I think I definitely will now.

I like how this UFO turning it to be a creature kind of liquifies a common sci-fi trope, the roaring spaceship. In visual media, machinery and spacecraft, whether futuristic or alien in nature, has this tendency to emit deep bellows, meant to both sell the size and power of the craft but also generate intrigue- is that the sound of engines firing? Metal scraping? Is it akin to a foghorn? In NOPE, the answer is quite simple. It’s pissed, and it wants you to know it.

The most terrifying scene was when the alien was above the house spewing blood over the house and you can hear all the people inside the alien screaming for their lives.

Shoutout to Angel the Fry’s electronic guy. He first started out as an average sales guy. I thought his part was gonna be short and out of the way, but instead he became one of the main characters and a vital part in helping OJ and Em. Also he wanted to help people. Really glad he made it in the end! 🙌🏼🙌🏼

Hearing the screams of the audience that got devoured tortured me, I was like just put them out of their misery already. Then the Occulonimbus just crushed them and then the blood rain was the creepiest s-it I've seen all year so far. Loved the creature design an original and excellent twist. I was trying to figure out how would you kill something like that lol. Definitely my favorite Peele movie.

Did anyone else notice how when Jupe said “ what if I told u in about a hour you’ll leave here different” with an hour left of the movie to go. He was really talking to us in the audience cause I left the theater thinking different af lol

I think OJ is indeed alive because we never hear Lucky screaming like the other horses when they got eaten. Perhaps OJ could've remained silent to not scare his sister but Lucky would have definitely screamed its lungs out.

There aren't a lot of alien movies that freak me out. For some reason this one did. Just the idea of something that big in the sky watching you is unsettling. Even more so when it can move fast enough to catch you.

OJ is definitely alive here, he's the one character that knows the most on to deal with it. Him surviving is quite simple, he likely turned away and took off, as soon as he seen Em drive away.

I disagree with people who say it was OJ’s ghost at the end…All signs point to the fact that he survived, we never literally saw him get sucked up into Jean jacket, all we saw was Jean jacket turn it’s course on Emerald…also another thing I noticed while watching the movie is that when Jean jacket transforms towards the end it only reverted back to its UFO type form after it absorbed something which was the balloon, why didn’t it do that when it supposedly sucked up OJ? And finally the most convincing fact is why didn’t we hear him scream? Throughout the movie we could hear people screaming echoing way up in the clouds as they were being digested if we could hear the screaming from that distance we should’ve heard OJ scream in pain, Which makes me believe he never died and that what we saw at the end was really him.

The Gordy scene when it actually shows him beating the people and then getting popped by the swat dudes had me fucking questioning life and then it transitioning to Yeuns character just staring off into space in his office for what felt like eternity, completely silent. My mouth was actually fully agape in the cinema. Some of the best shots, pacing, and themes I’ve ever seen in film. This movie is legit insane and one of my favorites of all time now.

Here’s my thoughts on OJ being alive. He hints in the movie that if it’s an animal like he says it can have its spirit broken. He uses that after he sees the alien spit out the horse at him in anger. Therefore giving him signs that they have something (the flags) that the alien doesn’t like to eat which is the only way to defend itself when it felt threatened. When he’s being chased he releases flags showing if the alien eats him it’ll hurt him like when he first ate something with flags (breaking his spirit). After the alien can’t eat/attack him the only way it knows how, it uses a very common animal trope like mentioned in the video flashy color patterns, puffing itself up,being loud, and all that. BUTTT when OJ still doesn’t look away (asserting dominance over alien) he flies away leaving him alone. If you pay attention when the jupe balloon flies up the face is staring at the alien doing the same intimidating trick he tried on OJ, but when gets lower and the face isn’t looking at the alien anymore then it eats it. That was the aliens way of testing its dominance on the balloon it thought was another threat looking it in the eyes.

My jaw dropped when the alien ate all those people. When the scene happened and people started getting sucked up into the creature I thought to myself "ooo now we get to see the aliens" but as the scene progressed I was like "WAIT THATS A GULLET WAIT WHAT"

As someone into the UFO-Alien niche, I find the choice of a Mantis as the interrupting insect quite interesting. Praying Mantis-type aliens have been reported amongst UFO abductees in a sizeable chunk of cases. I feel like Peele was trying to subvert the audience towards expecting the ‘creature’ to be an Insectoid-type being, as opposed to the UFO being the Alien.

It's so beautiful and yet so terrifying to look at. I think its final form looks completely aquatic, yet it's in the air. It looks "wrong," and gives off an uncanny vibe.

It's also funny how Jupe calls the UFO "the Viewers", kind of an analogy about how we as a society just view all the horrors taking place around us and just pull out our phones to film them and maybe get some fame and notoriety off them. Exactly the crowd's first reaction when they saw the creature. It's brilliant.

Awesome summary! I'm confident OJ survived. The shot of Emerald shutting her eyes was intentional, and OJ and Lucky's whole deal as characters was that they instinctually knew how to survive and gauge dangerous creatures. I believe an underlying theme for Em was the importance of family. The whole film, she was trying to keep separate from OJ and their family business. But in the end, OJ and Lucky under the Out Yonder sign was a representation that dropping their resentment for each other and embracing family would lead to success (and survival)

Been awhile since a movie scared the shit out of me but the scene where Jupe and the audience got swallowed up got me bad and it was so claustrophobic. I loved it.

This is the most accurate Lovecraft alien. Super powerful but can actually get killed really easily.

My friend and I theorised this alien came from our solar system and lived somewhere in the gas giants like Uranus and Neptune, because of it's squid/ jellyfish like form and it's reliance on levitation and mist to hunt. Seeing as it's a carnivore it makes you think what else lives out there, waiting to enter our planet.

When Jup revealed that he knew about the alien my jaw literally dropped. I just knew some shit was going to go wrong at that moment.

I feel like the "UFO" creature evolved on a gas giant, for how it got to earth in not sure. But it can explain why it's habitat is the atmosphere itself and why it creates its own clouds to live inside. Like how some animals in the ocean create air bubbles around themselves for protection.

Its a bit scary knowing this creature can easily break the sound barrier. In the 3rd act, after OJ unleashes the parachute and tries to attack him but he hides in that wooden building, it can be seen. Its a quick glimpse but you do see the sonic boom cloud as it takes off into the sky. So even if the military were to get involved and scramble some fighter jets to chase this creature, it can easily evade them. I do like the theory as well that this thing has been around so long that its what earlier humans considered to be an angel because of the form it takes when its only hovering and its "wings" spread apart.

Peele definitely made the ending ambiguous for the audience’s interpretation but I think OJ didn’t die. There are a number of reasons but I think it ties into the story Wincott told at the dinner table. The story “Purple People Eeater” describes a peculiar looking creature that came to earth and hid in a tree. One day someone saw it and pleaded to not be eaten and the monster replied, “I won’t eat you for you are too tough.” Essentially, because OJ had a great understanding on animals from being a horse wrangler, he survived every encounter with Jean Jacket. Obviously JJ remembers him and at the end, when it’s in it’s true form, it gives up on OJ and chases Em. I also think OJ living ties into Em’s growth because she initially chased fame and recognition but, after defeating JJ, she realized that it simply wasn’t worth it hence why she smiled at the sight of OJ and not at the sight of the photograph providing concrete, indisputable evidence of aliens; something they had all chased the entire film. Edit: additionally OJ is a very reserved man who likes the peaceful life on the ranch. I think him staying back was a way to congratulate Em on taking responsibility for once and letting her get the fame, something she desires more. Emerald wanted to make a name for herself and OJ wanted to continue what his father had started.

I’m obsessed with JJ’s design, not only the fact that it’s a living creature instead of a ship, but the likeness to the biblical angels. Also made me wonder if it replicates the voices of its victims in order to draw the attention of its next victims which adds to the horror element. Great movie, plot, acting and design.

The way the alien kinda like crushed its victims with the air then spits out their stuff is insane, this movie definitely gave me an entirely new look on “aliens”

I loved the feel of the ufo being an animal. Idk but when I saw this in theaters I was really taken back by how they managed to turn a faceless ufo into an animal

You know its an great movie when there's 'explained' and breakdown videos littered all over the internet. There were so many little details that I originally missed, had to go back and watch for a second time.

I've seen some people say OJ didn't actually survive and that it was his ghost that Em sees at the end, but I don't think that's true. I think he did survive because in order to consume prey, JJ has to return to the saucer form (as showed when it tries to eat the kid sheriff balloon). OJ was still alive when Em started driving away on the motorcycle, luring JJ behind her. JJ stayed in it's defensive form until trying to eat the balloon. OJ should still be alive and well.

I can say without a doubt that the overlooming and sense of dread in the first ¾s of the movie made it a solid masterpiece, not to many movies can draw attention and tension as this one and the twist that it was a live being made it that much better , new to the table and eye catching

I just love the twist of Jean Jacket being a living being rather than the usual of it being a mere craft. However, one more thing that I noticed is how the name they give the UFO is given more meaning towards the end. During the whole movie, Em avoids responsibilities, whether it be helping OJ with the ranch, putting in the work for her family’s business, or even when they were trying to capture proof of the UFO. All in part due to I suppose the fact that she wasn’t given the opportunity to train the horse her father had promised, whom they named Jean Jacket. But towards the conclusion, Em finally has the chance and takes on the task of dealing with this new J.J, saving both the lives of others and perhaps returning her family’s name in the limelight.

As a side note, Peele also mentioned that JJ was also inspired by the giant eye alien “Sahaquiel” from Evangelion, for its lack of bio-mechanical design nature.

This was such a good movie. Realized it was an animal around the same time OJ did lol. Also the chimp scenes were pretty cool.

An animal can only ever be what it is, an animal. You treat it with respect, or you pay the price. The more wild an animal is, the more true that becomes.

I love the concept of a “bad miracle” or a simple but impossible thing that leads to terrible repercussions, either immediately or in the distance future.

I loved the fact that..when angel was one super excited... him talkin' about all those space allien stuff to cheer up grumpy OJ...as in when the hunting spree started by that monster..he was the one to get scared and strung more than anyone...😂

I can appreciate the message in all of Jordan’s Peeles movies but this one really ticked my boxes in terms of aerial megafauna, such a cool concept and works on so many levels. All squishy so no fossil record

A very fun movie. I remember my thought when seeing Jean Jacket's eyes unfold and the creature expand those are common displays in the animal kingdom to scare off predators. Which made me think in the movie that Jean Jacket wasn't an Apex predator that there were likely other threats out there or even other unknown predators

Thanks so much for this excellent breakdown. ‘Nope’ has become my favourite contemporary sci-fi alongside ‘Arrival’. Rarely do you see such wild concepts combined with such intelligence, and such engaging storytelling at the same time. And a shout out for the music, right? The Western-themed score when OJ on horseback is being chased by JJ recalls some classics! Amazing filmmaking that never underestimates it’s audience’s intelligence and keeps you guessing all the way.

I looked at Holst going rogue at the last moment, NOT only as him trying to get the impossible shot, but also willing to die for it AND with it. Emphasis on *with it*, because the wealth and accolades that he would have unequivocally received didn't matter to him. It also felt like he wanted to protect this possibly extinct creature from being viewed. So from what he said right before, that sounded cryptic to Angel (but I think was for us to know as the audience that his footage would not bring the Oprah interview fame & financial gains OJ, Em & Angel desired, because he (Holst) didn't even think the public, society--- the world were worthy of any film footage of that amazing creature,"🎶one eyed... Purple people eater🎶") it was clear it was a sucicide mission. It's like he wanted to capture it for his own enjoyment & satisfaction as the last and probably most awesome thing he would ever capture on camera. He chose for himself how he wanted to end his career and ultimately his life. He went out with a close up of his own mortality and fatality embodied in this Sci-NON-Fi, supernatural creature, knowing it would just consume him and eliminate the inorganic waste of his camera

I don't believe OJ died, at the end of the film... he's never shown being consumed; and he was more luring Jean Jacket's attention before it shifted back to Em. I think the Out Yonder was just the potential of what was in store for them. I feel like the film would have definitely shown OJ being eaten had they chosen to go that route. Maybe the original screenplay had him being eaten and they changed it, but I don't think the current cut has him die.

The alien was foreshadowed as an octopus. When Em calls Antler Holst, he was watching videos of animal predators. Among them is an octopus. Just like an Octopus, the alien camouflages among the clouds as an octopus camoflages into the sand, coral, etc. It can change it's shape just like an octopus. The way it moves smoothly in the air like an octopus swims underwater. Finally, its mouth loks like an octopus's beak.

I’m glad I’m not the only one who thought the scene of all those people being eaten was traumatizing. Like violence doesn’t usually bother me but in some situations it just makes me it seem so much worse. Like I felt really off for like the next hour after seeing that scene.

I love the way OJ stayed in the car when he saw the creature above his car waiting and he say "NOPE"

I doubt OJ died. Last we see him, he's confronting the alien, staring right at its eye which established dominance. The alien was trying to be threatening but OJ stood his ground. In that moment, the alien resembles a camera lens and gives nod to the opening shot at the beginning.

I have read some interesting "aerial predator" ufo stories. One that blew my mind was a man who discovered a strange, mollusk like creature (think of a more symmetrical clam, only like the size of a car) on a Mesa; it was "breathing" by it's lower and upper halves spreading apart and then contracting back together. As he and his companion studied it, a long tongue/tendril came from a MUCH larger airborne version of the creature that was floating almost silently above them, and pulled the smaller one to it. When I heard what Nope was about, it reminded me of this story.

I think this is the best alien I’ve ever seen put to film. The amount of thought put into it with all the references tying it together is so nice to see. Really, a spectacle.

This monster reminds me of an SCP that for the life of me I can't recall the number of but it's like a giant Jellyfish that hides in the clouds - has a giant eye and if you make eye contact with it that's how it decides its next prey. Edit: Its SCP 312 the Atmospheric Jellyfish.

Interesting how in all its forms you can interpret its appearance as a disc shaped alien space craft, a large weird weather balloon, or an angelic deity. In my opinion this was basically a Lovecraft type creature that had the intelligence of something around the level of a dolphin or a chimp at minimum. Whether it came from space or evolved on earth (or both) doesn't matter, but it's something that humanity has been seeing out of the corner of its eye for millennia. Humanity has given it many names throughout history but it could never quite put its finger on it due to its elusive nature. An Interesting thought is that if this creature naturally evolved "anti gravity" capabilities that there is a good reason for the disc shape when it's in its most maneuverable form. The same way that humans have to design planes with wings and tails in order to "fly like birds", so too would we (or an intelligent alien species) have to design craft in the shape of flying discs with electromagnetic interference properties to replicate the anti gravity/flight characteristics of this creature or creatures like it.

I just seen a video about that incident of the chimpanzee chewing that woman's face off. I can tell Jordan Peele that inspiration from that incident and put it in this movie. And we can see why child actor was very traumatized.

I enjoyed this breakdown. I thought OJ survived though. I thought since he figured out how to keep it away by not looking at it directly, he was just able to distract it while M got away.

Fun Fact: Jordan Peele's insperation for the alien's design at the end of the film was inspired by one of Evangelion's Angels. There's even an Akira motorcycle slide.

I remember the ape attack in 2009. I was a child and, after seeing her face, I was terrified of apes. I still am. Also, I could never remember the name Jean Jacket, so usually I refer to the creature as the "Croatoan"

Glad I got the chance to see this in theaters, this made me afraid to be in wide open areas lol. Then to not use actual aliens but make the ship an entity within itself, fuckin brilliant. Scared the shit outta me lol.

The creature reminds me of the cryptid called atmospheric jellyfish. The story is Earth's atmosphere is full of micro organisms that evolved over time into jellyfish-like creatures that are mistaken for clouds.

Does anyone else thing the eye of the alien represented a camera sensor the way it would shutter. The Green eyed monster maybe something to do with envy. Also following that theme. To look on with envious eyes being a war of the worlds reference. As with most JP films the subtext is deep. The idea of surveillance, who watches the watcher. The opening was the muybridge footage being digested by the beast. Loved this film so to with Get Out and Us. Such a unique vision.

Nope: such a visceral experience and technically Jordan Peel’s best work. He adopted a kind of Hitchcock/Kubrick style to this film which I love. The visual storytelling on display here is immaculate. Daniel Kaluella is brilliant in delivering a stoic performance. He conveyed so much emotion with his eyes I love it. The film is light on exposition regarding the creature. No unnecessary government/military plot devices Peele respects the audiences intelligence to interpret the story for themselves. The film is also a love letter to many classic UFO movies. The cinematography of this film is breathtaking. Every frame is meticulously crafted. It’s not a Jordan Peel movie if it’s not filled to the brim with profound metaphors and keen subtext. The design and nature of the creature, the transparency of the film industry and the understanding of the symbiotic relationship between predators and prey are so intricately conveyed. This film is so multilayered no doubt it will be studied for years to come. Seen it twice, took my gf to see it a second time, initially she wasn’t thrilled but a few days later she watched it again because it peaked her curiosity. This is the power of film; watching something that sticks in your mind, challenges your beliefs and preconceptions on reality. Can’t wait to watch this again. H

I really loved this movie. It kept me so on edge, especially since i didnt watxha single trailer. And the symbolism was good too (after watching some explained videos). I also don't know why, but this UFO for real made me lose sleep from how scared I was. I don't know why but Peele did something right to make me scared of clouds.

Reminds me of the Atmospheric Jellyfish cryptids, literal giant jellyfish like entities that live amongst the clouds. Jellyfish are already very otherworldly looking creatures so it wouldn't surprise me if there was some sort convergent evolution that resulted in a similar creature.

The Alien is the image of an eye. 9:25 hence the reason why the biker was killed. He never had direct eye contact with the alien, but his helmet was mirrored. So when the alien hovered over him it was a reflection of a eye looking back.

I thought OJ just survived, I never interpreted it as his ghost since his sister quickly caught jean jacket's attention on her bike

I love how its a predator and preys on humans assumptions. We still haven't map most of the world and new species are being discovered, often blending and adapting to humanity.

Absolutely loved this movie. Thought it was properly scary at points. Was driving through southern Utah (similar landscape) and kept looking at the clouds to make sure they moved. Amazing twists, acting, creature design, hit every box for me.

I love the scene where Em passes by Jean Jacket as she avoids looking at it and giving us the perfect view of what's about to unveil.

Originally OJ died but the actor convinced Peele to keep him alive. I think this was the better option because I like to think OJ managed to break Jean. A respect was earned between them.

Pretty sure OJ didnt die at the end; dont think that was an apparition or his ghost since the movie never established those types of hallutionations or themes in the movie. Adding that in at the very end would have been out of place, because it would have came out of nowhere with no setup or grounds for understanding. Looks more like an subversion of expectations or bait and switch, since the scene only implied he was going to die but gave no confirmation on screen before making a hard cut back to Emerald. Its like the setup was to give the viewer Emerald's interpretation of events, to add more weight and tension to the following events... which wouldnt have been as empathetic and strong if we knew he was alive, while Emerald was distraught and struggling to continue with the plan.

It was refreshing to see a novel approach to alien design, and it's nice that it's never revealed to be either a terrestrial cryptid or an extraterrestrial from beyond. You think it's some sort of flying stingray at first, but it's more like an aerial version of a gelatinous deep sea invertebrate, and you get the sense that it's probably very lightweight despite its size in order to stay in the air, much like a kite. The ability to alter into an aerodynamic shape for speed and stealth could have been an evolutionary adaptation, or a completely novel behavior to cope with Earth's atmosphere. The unconventional "cloud like" biology was evocative of the cosmic horror creature from Annihilation, the locale felt like a tribute to Tremors, and the effort by the characters to just get anywhere near it and survive was like the tension of Jaws, and there was certainly an overall Spielbergian tone to the film. The ending was a bit nonsensical though because a helium balloon being popped wouldn't provide anywhere near enough explosive force to cause violent damage. It would have had to be filled with hydrogen to (maybe) cause such an explosion, but there's no reason such a balloon would be filled with dangerous gas. The sound you hear when a balloon pops is a tiny sonic boom as air around the balloon rushes to fill the space formerly occupied by the balloon. That's an implosion, not an explosion, and it's not enough force to blow something up, certainly not an animal that is able to consume horses and people. But that thing exploded like the Death Star taking a torpedo right up the exhaust. This was a pretty thoughtful movie and I would have liked to see them also come up with a clever method to deal with the creature, rather than seeing it go poof like a fart in the wind as though it was made of tissue paper.

I also found that there was mirroring between the hat that Jupe wore and the shape and color of the alien. There's even foreshadowing of this when his wife places his cowboy hat on his head just before he heads out to draw the alien in. She's the one who puts it on his head, as she's the one "running" the show, but he pulls the hat down, as if he's accepting the role ahead of him.

This movie was odd but pretty good. Original creatures are always my favorite.

Watched this film twice now with my bff and we've both put it in our top 5. We might even go a third time. AMAZING film. We don't think OJ is a ghost at the end, we think he survives - because there's no other scene where hallucinations are even hinted at during the movie. All the POV of the characters is shown as reality, not as unreliable. That's our two cents.

Films with a new style from Jordan Peel are always interesting and tense. This is for those of us who discuss the film nope on our channel equally like it. Jordan Peele is amazing

This has to be the first sci-if film (as far as I know) where the UFO and the alien are one and the same.

I'm gonna believe that Jean is a biblically accurate angel. The design of its true form seems heavily inspired by what we know angels to look like. Also, one of the designers for Jean Jacket said that it could've survived it's apparent death, so here's hoping for a sequel of some sort that explores this creature in a bit more capacity!

I don’t think OJ was meant to be interpreted as a ghost at the end. I think he learned enough about the being to stand his ground and survive. He didn’t run or look away from its puffed up aggressive form. But Em did. So it turned its attention to her.

It's neat to think if the creature is native to earth or elsewhere. If the latter, then the cloud camouflage it has might even elude it being from planets like earth. Weird thought, but fun to consider when a movie leaves room for interpretation.

seriously one of the coolest creature designs in recent films.

what i love about this movie is how it takes the concept of “leaving the horror to your imagination by not showing it” and completely ignores it. what made this movie a million times scarier is showing you everything about the alien and how it eats. one of the most f’ed up things i’ve seen

I’m a little upset that there are a lot of people who will watch this and not watch the movie. Seeing this movie with no spoilers for the first time is an experience to say the least. JP’S Take on a monster movie was great and makes me hopeful for this breath of fresh air in the stagnant horror genre we have now. I feel like I’m living in the 80s with all these weird horror movies and I love it
