Hey guys what’s happening? Niyat here with film comics explained. As requested, today we’ll be exploring Knock at the Cabin, the 2023 post-apocalyptic thriller written and directed by M. Night Shyamalan, based on the novel The Cabin at the End of the World by Paul G. Tremblay.
Starring Dave Bautista, Rupert Grint, Jonathan Groff, Kristen Cui, Ben Aldridge, Nikki Amuka-Bird, and Abby Quinn, the film revolves around a family whose holiday is upended by a cult. Told they need to sacrifice one of their own to prevent the end of the world, the thriller has them and the audience question whether the invaders were lunatics or messengers of truth.
Much like the rest of M. Night Shyamalan’s filmography, the backbone of the movie is intrigue and mystery. A group are faced with weird supernatural circumstances and are forced to make tough self-revelatory choices that go on to define them, and occasionally the world around them.
Part of what lured the director to the project is his fascination with the weird and unexplainable. Ironically, as we’ll discuss in this video, that didn’t stop him from taking certain liberties that traded the ambiguity in the novel for more explicit themes and iconography. The guy loves his symbolism.
In this video, we’re going to explain the narrative, the main characters in the story and how the film differs from the novel.

@@hitmanmonaghan6633 there were like 3 British actors in that movie, playing Americans Andrew, Sabrina and Redmond. Arguably the American accent is the easiest of all the English language accents. Very rarely would you find a bad American accent by a non-American portrayed on screen, save for Benedict Cumberbatch in Doctor Strange (2016). But even then, he improved quickly enough. Now the inverse, is simply not true... rare exemptions for like Renee Zellweger, and Daniel Davis in The Nanny. Who I had thought for the longest time was actually English.

The twist is at the beginning when all think they, those four, are some robbers, the second twist is when they start killing each other. There is always a surprise, or as you say twist, that is the bedrock of his movies. In "Old" there is also a twist at the beginning, the magical beach, and second, some pharma company is using it for experiments, but the second one is the weak part of that movie, illogical and not really thought off well.

"Now I saw when the Lamb opened one of the seals; and I heard one of the four living creatures saying with a voice like thunder, "Come and see." And I looked, and behold, a white horse. He who sat on it had a bow; and a crown was given to him, and he went out conquering and to conquer. When He opened the second seal, I heard the second living creature saying, "Come and see." Another horse, fiery red, went out. And it was granted to the one who sat on it to take peace from the earth, and that people should kill one another; and there was given to him a great sword. When He opened the third seal, I heard the third living creature say, "Come and see." So I looked, and behold, a black horse, and he who sat on it had a pair of scales in his hand. And I heard a voice in the midst of the four living creatures saying, "A quart of wheat for a denarius, and three quarts of barley for a denarius; and do not harm the oil and the wine." When He opened the fourth seal, I heard the voice of the fourth living creature saying, "Come and see." So I looked, and behold, a pale horse. And the name of him who sat on it was Death, and Hades followed with him. And power was given to them over a fourth of the earth, to kill with sword, with hunger, with death, and by the beasts of the earth." - Revelation 6:1-8

@ToughVato
@ToughVato Жыл бұрын
Well isn’t the only time you see a doctor when they are they’re trying to prevent a death so it would make sense that each Horsemen of the apocalypse when it said that they bring the apocalypse with them could be misconstrued as a semantic error. The presence of a doctor invokes imagery of death despite the fact that he is there against it so the same could be very true on a very godly level With every Horsemen of the apocalypse.
@Luuk401
@Luuk401 Жыл бұрын
For some reason, I have not read anyone making this connection yet. What if each of the Horsemen are connected to the disaster that proceeded their death? The earthquake started before Malice's (Redmond as the assailant) death. Earthquakes to represent the aggression of nature. After his death, the next plague started: tsunami/flood. This could relate to water being a necessity for human existence, being necessary for food and existence and thus nourishment (Adriane as the chef). The virus is inextricably linked to healthcare and therefore healing (Sabrina as the nurse). This one is more of a stretch: the planes use all kinds of guidance systems, so crashing could be because of a lack of guidance (Leonard as the teacher). After the four horsemen, it is time for the final judgment, which means the second coming of Christ. Christ's second coming comes after the rise of the Antichrist (CCC 675). Fire (caused by lightning) inaugurated the coming of the Antichrist. That chapter could only be ended by the second coming of Christ, who had died for humanity's sins. Eric did the exact same and could end the chapter and thus died to protect humanity. (Eric saw Jesus before Redmond's death. Jesus was standing with the Horsemen, as Jesus is the 5th Horseman. For Eric, this both confirmed the story being told and foreshadowed his own role in it) Each of their deaths didn't start a new chapter, it ended one before the next one could begin. Each plague's chapter was ended by someone representing the opposite dying: war/peace or repetence (What if Redmond wasn't Malice, but Peace, after having gone through the prison system and becoming, as he said, a 'different person'); famine/nurturing; death/healing; conquest/guidance and the Antichrist/Christ.

This film was actually really good. The pacing, the setup, the exposition, leading into the climax and Night still has it with his directorial leadership. The camerawork was crisp and just hit all the notes. But the reason why people disliked this film is the same reason that made it so good. Shyamalan opted to keep the skeleton of the story inside of the cabin, exposition being delivered in flashbacks or in the Cinematic disasters, you feel like the hostages. Watching as spectators, but not fully enveloped in the danger. It made the atmosphere more eery and claustrophobic, but we couldn't feel the tension like it was happening to us. Then you have the fact that everyone built their hopes up for a major twist, when M. Night Shyamalan played it straight, everyone's hopes were dashed. Normally I'm on the side of the audience, since films are made to be watched, but this time I'm backing Shyamalan. This film was a good film, people just had their hopes up too much and that isn't Shyamalans fault.

I was speaking about the catastrophes that were happening that didn't directly influence what the main characters were feeling or their decision making. One innocent child, one dead set to deny the happenings and one true believer. Due to a lot of the happenings being fought against by the non believer, it didn't feel personal and you couldn't really feel the weight of their decisions until the climax. I just watched this movie last night, I have to say it was very well done and worth a view. Bautista, truly surprised me with his acting, I suspected what the other said, though when Leonard said that they weren't necessarily there to hurt them nor held any hate towards them I believed it....honestly all these actors did a great job. And while the ending upset me due to how this family was broken down, when the first horseman (Redmond) died and I saw how Eric reacted, I could tell that at the end he was going to make the suffice. In the movie, I could understand why they made the decision as they did have to think of their daughter Wen's future...but in case of the book where Wen had died, I can not see them doing it. I don't feel that in the movie that if Eric hadn't pleaded with Andrew and telling him how that him and their daughter would grow up and be ok that Andrew would have been ok with making a decision...afterall why would he make a decision to save a world where he had no one, him losing his daughter, him losing his love. Why would he care about the world when the world took everything he held close to him?

Why I like the ambiguity of the book I fell the movie's ending is great because it makes the question more solid; "Could you sacrifice your beloved to save the world?" Seems so simple to say yes and the saddest part is the familly is picked because their love is pure. If I had someone I loved and there might be fights but never a thought of leaving them. Being able to picture myself growing old with this person never doubting the relationship? I might say fuck it and lets walk the burnt world together too. I do have more faith in humanity even though it can suck at times but if I had someone like that it'd be a real tough choice. I'd probably offer to be the sacrifice if only because a life without them would seem shitty and seeing the world continue to suck might send me into a spiral of depression knowing what I gave up for it. Granted having a child I loved might help me through it but still, it'd be rough.

I’ve subscribed to the War, Famine, Pestilence and Death horsemen. I’ve not read the source book, so I’m going all off the film. As such, I always saw Sabrina, as a healer/nurse as the opposite of Pestilence. Leonard as a gentle giant, and elementary school teacher, and the final horseman, he’s forced to finish off Sabrina, as well himself. To me, he’s been Death all along. Thank you for another great vid!

The only thing I don't hear people talking about is how the family is the holy trinity. You really get that sense when the two fathers start to argue you have a clear angry "god" who is sick of humanity and a willing martyr "Jesus" that still sees hope in humanity. The child is the holy spirit the thing that gives you faith and purpose again so the father lived through you - hence her turning their favorite song back on at the end. Hence her being so pure, innocent and good. She is the holy spirit Also the song was "resurrection" of Jesus. Uniting the trinity again "always together"

So, It Comes At End + Mother! with a different take? You never see what "it" is but the setting is always tense it seems. Night imo has been chasing the success of Signs with it's layers but they keep falling short. I like personified calamities, that's different to me. Kind of a deeper and morally challenging The Strangers now that I think about more too
