Colin Hay has a sincerity in his singing that can't be ignored. It's the soul of a true artist. Here it was just a snippet of a song yet I was deeply moved. Joe Bonamassa is a true Olympic athlete on the fret board and I would love to have that skill yet I'm never moved by his playing. As for Larry Carlton. Well, He's a master musician, plain and simple. He's got the skill that very few have and the soul to move anyone with the heart to hear.

Right. Joe has skill. But thats it... He has no soul. No feeling. Hard pass..
@jonRboy
@jonRboy 2 жыл бұрын
I fully agree with your assessment of Bonamassa. I don't find his playing interesting at all; it does nothing for me. I mean he knows his pentatonic scales and does all the stock licks, has technique and speed but how cares? It sounds so generic and uninteresting. There's a huge gulf when comparing his part of this clip with Larry Carlton's.
@philsarkol6443
@philsarkol6443 2 жыл бұрын
You have written exactly what I had in mind; in that order. The honesty and sincerity of Colin Haye in his performing this song "Overkill", of wich I thought was titled "Night after night"..and mr. Larry Carlton who has this way of playing and the sound, with his heart and soul, down to earth man I admire and respect greatly!! (As for the show-off..no soul, no blues on a big jazzer..olympic medal for runnin up and down the stairs)
@mrfester42
@mrfester42 2 жыл бұрын
@@philsarkol6443 Right! ,,, except I wouldn't go so far as to call Bonamassa a show off. In fact, I think the opposite is true. The feeling I get when he plays is that he's turned totally inward. Maybe that's why his playing sounds so flat and uninteresting. He's just conversing with himself in his own language. All the musicians that I would call great have a heart that has something to say and a "soul" that wants to connect with others and be heard with a language that everybody understands. All the great ones, no matter how reserved and humble they are when not playing, are just aching to connect with the world and THAT is what we hear.

I pulled up next to his tour bus, on the offramp for Harbor Blvd. He was playing at the Galaxy that night, a couple blocks north. I am in my "94" S10, with my son right next to me in his child seat our dog sticking his head through the slider right above my son's head. I have the windows down, and am listening to Tab Beniot. I look over and BB is standing in the door of the bus, Big smile on his face and waving at us. Amazing!

while I appreciate the talent, the genius of "In My Life" is the lyrics, so no matter how great a job someone does playing it on guitar it just will never be in the same universe as the actual song. In fact it relies on the listener already knowing the lyrics to have any impact at all.

Most of his visitors are not there for a social visit, they are there snooping, people in our line of work always stop by there particularly newbys, to let norman know they are around and possibly available for whatever. I won't say who this person is because he did not give me permission to ,but one of the greatest guitar players alive today was discovered by a prison guard in florida after hearing him play day after day in the prison, and realizing this man can play anything after hearing it only one time, put that together with a voice that absolutely commands respect from the greatest singers and you got yourself a 100 million dollar man, and he did just that in less than 5 years , one day he might tell the world his story but not yet, he is a bit busy making up for lost time .

Every musical instrument has its own personality - it’s voice. It tells you what it wants to play - not the other way round. This is especially true for vintage gear.
