With almost all players, I have a good idea where they are going next. With Albert, it is often a fresh surprise. Unique and fantastic.

Yes, yes, yes, Rick. And I think he's such a great guitar player (one of the best, to me) because he's such a nice man.

Walking down William Street in Sydney Au. probly about early May 1993, I was stopped at the traffic lights and saw a man across the street carrying a guitar in a case. His demeanor suggested he was an accomplished player, I did not wish to appear rude and never "looked." However I knew that by the time the lights changed and I crossed I would be virtually face to face, so when that happened I did "take a look" .. Albert Lee scowled right back at me. George Harrison did the same thing at Sydney airport in 1981, I had taken a flight from Darwin and was waiting for a flight to Brisbane. There was only one other person in the departure lounge when I got there and when I checked him over he scowled .. I never recognized him and mouthed the words "what did I do," he loosened up a bit and actually smiled. It came over the Brisbane News that evening, George had flown in that day on a private trip to attend the Hare Krishna festival in Murwillumbah just over the Border in New South Wales .. that's when I knew who the dude in the departure lounge was :)
@TheDillinger227 жыл бұрын
I did not "stare" on either occasion .. in the first AL instance the guy with the guitar looked like a top player, ok I wanted to see who it was and took a glance. The George Harrison encounter was no more nor less than the camaraderie the fellowship of travel engenders, it would have been rude if I had not looked.

A work acquaintance of mine once introduced me to Albert and we had dinner together before he played a concert in Brighton, England. He was such a modest and pleasant man and he didn't mind going over all the old stories that he must have answered questions on for years. A really nice man and an honour to have met him. Great guitarist too, of course!

Albert Lee is such a soft spoken modest and very humble musician. A really down to earth individual that appreciates the fans and one of the few to take the time to acknowledge the common folk. Thanks Norm for being so cool with such a great collection of guitars and posting these clips. Cheers from México

A true gentleman of the music business, not such a common thing. I met Albert at a guitar exhibition in Manchester back in the early 90's (I think), anyway he played a master class and at the end made time to mix with the small audience.I was about 20 at the time and had never heard of the great man but was blown away by his talent and his humble attitude. A great bloke.

I attended an Albert Lee gig in Stoke-on-Trent a few years ago, me and about twenty other people. Albert played a superb set and when the band finished he came across to where I was standing ( yes, he came to me!!!) for a chat, when I said how sorry I was for the poor attendance,he replied that the weather wasn't very good! A great player and a true gentleman. p.s. Shame on you people of Stoke!!

Oh yeah... "The Agoura Valley Inn" right next to the 101 Freeway... And old friend of mine and myself went to a lot of those gigs back then. They were so awesome. Such great energy. Albert Lee playing the heck out of those arpeggio's and John Hobb's just playing the heck out of the piano... Some of the best live music I have ever seen in my life. So close up and in such an intimate setting watching such a great player. Great memories. I'm so glad you mentioned those gigs. He did them almost once a week for a long time. I really miss those days. *_"She thinks all her boyfriends are so dumb. She drinks coca-cola with her Valium... Mother calls, She sticks another pin, In her doll, And lets those fingers talk her into it. She got the lip gloss, She got the short-shorts, She got her records and They're all imports. She got her good looks, She got her yearbook. She got it all... She got it all... She got it all... In her pink bedroom."_*

Yes, the AVI. That was a fun little joint. I remember Ron's band playing there, and Albert sitting in. I remember Merle Haggard's bass player was playing in there, sometimes, and Don Markham would drop by also. Dean, did you play music there? I remember a chap named Mark, who was a singer and rhythm guitar player, would be there, with his girlfriend, kind of regularly, in the audience.

+Paul McCaffrey no problem Paul....easily remembered due to fans dancing in one of the boxes and going through the floor....led to a lengthy ban on rock gigs in the RAH.....
@PaulMcCaffreyfmac8 жыл бұрын
It's interesting you say that because I was convinced that the ban happened after a Family benefit for Shelter when the power was turned off before the band had come to the natural end of their set and some seats in the arena were ripped out in a minor riot. I think my problem is that I saw too many bands at the RAH around that time...Hahahaha

Such a humble guy for having such ability. Albert played a small gig in Kirkcudbright, Scotland, about 10 years ago and I bought all of the albums he had on sale after the show. I wasn’t bothered about having them signed, but stood in line because I just wanted to shake his hand. Unfortunately, he thought I was too mean to buy and was holding up those who had bought and were queuing behind me, and so he showed me along with a bit of a disdainful look - I was a bit disappointed but understood his mistake, and it never tarnished my opinion of him - I actually thought it was quite funny - a lovely guy. Incidentally, Elio Pace was fantastic that night.

Yes, them's were the days at the AVI. Albert used to roll a piano in there, too, and play it. He was so low key, there. Friendly chap, too. I didn't know who Albert was, when I walked in the door. I ordered a beer, and said hi to the guy standing next to me. He was friendly, and just acted like another chap at the bar. It was Albert. I almost think that he found it amusing that I didn't know who he was or his history. He started playing, and I thought, man, this guy's pretty good on guitar. I still had no idea. Then someone told me, eh... do you know who this guy has played with? At that point I figured out his place in the heirarchy of guitar players. Albert would come in there regularly, and play. It was fun, and there weren't that many people in the bar, most of the time. He'd sit in with Ron and his band. Bridgett and her mom would tend bar. Rosie would drop by and play, also. It was a very kind of small and down home environment, for being in the LA area. I do remember Albert playing leads on that baritone guitar. I'd never seen one of those things before that time. It kind of just looked like a weird guitar. Fun memories. (PS: My only regret is that I didn't get to jam with Albert. I did get to jam with Rosie, though.)
