I have played in quite some bands and I immediately thought: Bro, if you are not heard in a band context, usually the last thing that comes to mind is the guitar - mic placement, Cabinet and speakers or IRs, EQ, Amp and Settings, effect choices, and I guess the last place to look for is the guitar. Plus you have to dial the tone not at home, but in the rehearsal, band session etc. Never be afraid of extreme settings. What I do is close my eyes and just turn the knob until it feels right, but of course I am a real amp guy. Love you videos man! Love to see those beautiful instruments :D Thanks for sharing some valuable lesson

Yes you are very right. The differences in guitar tone , made by the guitar, are primarily for the guitar player sitting a room playing by himself/herself. In a live or band setting, there are a hundred other factors that are much more important than the guitar

You lost $ on the sale, but picked up the 7-string at a reduced price. In my book, you actually did very well - especially since you went from something so fancy, that you did not play it…to your main axe!! That’s a win!!! Beautiful guitars, and I enjoy your channel!

A friend lusted after a guitar from a well known boutique maker. He eventually bought one and it was beautiful but now it sadly resides in its case under his bed. He doesn’t get it out much in case he damages it. Madness .

A Good "Return" Policy is a plus! Also, I've played in bands & situations w/ multi-guitarists. The best guitars for cutting through are Strats in general, and "all" maple guitars w/ EMG's or coil-splitting HB's. Amps won't be an issue w/ those equipped guitars, as long as they are over 60 watts and have proper coverage!

I do agree single coil guitars cut through incredibly, all other things being equal.

Yeah, a top can be high grade, but certain stains just kills the depth/3d effect, I don't get why such stains/finishes are used..
@ministryofguitar
@ministryofguitar 3 ай бұрын
That's true. In my experience though, PRS are expert at staining and they don't kill the depth but rather enhance it. This top, I think, just wasn't as deep and 3D as some other tops. But we are talking very high standards here

About the bonus: "more responsible things to do than buying a guitar". Man, that looks like me! Edit: may I suggest you to try a Jackson Soloist with Seymour Duncan Hotrails pickup ? (To be heard with other guitarists)
@ministryofguitar

thanks man. the to be heard problem got solved once i shifted to putting the helix through to the fx in of the amp. Also now we dial our tones (between the 3 guitarists) better to sit in different parts of the mix

i was thinking about buying the eagle prs around 1990-91 and i totally forgot about it also that crossroads doubleneck hope you have a will dude never hear guitar ppl talk about that enough lol i just restrung my guitar with 11's again of course raising the action and the tone is there try raising the action and playing a bit heavier gauge of course also with a thick pick the thick pick thing was a hard lesson i learned younglings if you play lead don't use thin picks awesome collection man

I’ve never really heard the difference in guitars. I’d pick based on “ease of play” and how much you actually like holding and playing the instrument. But then again. I’m a super rookie.

You should have just put a set of Pauls pickups into a PRS that you already had! I get nauseous at just the thought of selling my guitars, and i NEVER would have let that Eagle go. Even if all i did was look at it.

yeah...I bought TWO PRS guitars new, a Custom 24 and a 594 Singlecut. They were very nice guitars and arrived in perfect shape. But after playing them? I am NOT a PRS guy. Selling them at a loss was painful. I play super strat guitars, and that is what I stick with now! lesson learned, right brother?

Only the FIRST person to buy a PRS Private Stock guitar is likely to see it as having THAT much value. On the used market they almost never bring as much. They're not an investment.

In April of 2016 I bought a Gibson R9 . At first I was excited but over time the guitar became a burden . I would get it out of the case so carefully and strum a few chords and play a few licks and put it back in the case . Then I would get out one of my lesser valued guitar and PLAY . One day I had enough , I told myself "this guitar is playing you". Here I busted my butt to earn enough to buy the guitar only to take care of it for someone else to enjoy . So that day forward I just let it rip . It has some dings and scratches and some finish checking but I'm enjoying it . And lets be honest , Custom Shop Gibson's are not going to be as rare as the original late 50's early 60's guitars . They make 100's of these a month . Plus once the baby boomers pass on , Gen X and Millennials are going to see a MASSIVE influx of used guitars . The Baby Boomers and Gen X grew up in the peak of guitar . So those who are buying guitars as an investment .......I don't think that is a wise move . Unless there is HUGE rock n roll movement here shortly , guitar will go the way of Elvis LP's lol
@ministryofguitar
@ministryofguitar 3 ай бұрын
Glad to know you are playing your R9. I do have a thought on why guitars will not die with baby boomers. It’s going to be coming up in a future video

That's an interesting take. As a millenial guitarist I can't fathom paying out for any kind of reissue or vintage correct instrument. I'd rather buy a good Les Paul that's new. I think when people started looking at guitars as investments something was indeed lost. I share your opinion that once the boomers are largely out of the guitar game and some of gen X, the market will be flooded and the industry will be in for a shock.

Buy in haste. Regret at leisure. You and I operate on very different levels, my friend. That said, I can't escape the notion you would be an absolute delight to geek out with. If you're ever in the States, let us know. I'd like to waste an afternoon chatting guitars with you.

I agonize over every purchase, and if it's gone by the time I come around, then so be it. Even then sometimes I realize that buying that thing isn't the thing that would do it. So don't feel so bad! But also, yes, so much yes here.

One thing I've observed is nearly every time I see someone get their "dream" guitar or a guitar that's abnormally expensive for them it ends up getting sold off or traded away. When shelling out big bucks for guitars one needs to know its going to work, but its often just speculation and wishful thinking. Seems so counter intuitive working for so long to buy some high priced thing that owns you rather than vice versa.

You are very right. Especially for gear, which are essentially tools (though guitars can be art also imo), if you buy something too precious, you don’t dare use it

It's a very good point man. The choice between passion and pragmatism is a tough one. A lot of people (myself included) sacrificed pursuing passions at an early age because life didn't really give us a choice so we had to go for the more stable route

Don't buy any guitar unless you are playing it yourself first to properly assess it regardless of it's outlay....end of report!....and!!!!! only play it through your own rig/modeller likewise....many shops are cool with anyone doing that just by prior checking.

People say this all the time. It’s just not realistic for some folks depending on where you live. For 10k, sure, travel to the guitar. But for a lot of us that isn’t an option in our price brackets.
