North Bay Railfanning SMART and NWP Trains From San Rafael to Santa Rosa, CA

Ever since the debut of Sonoma Marin Area Rail Transit (SMART), I had been meaning to make an end-to-end video of smart and some NWP on the side. Here we see just that: Smart trains at various points along the line from the southern end in San Rafael, to the northern end in Santa Rosa. Also NWP on the Brazos branch. Enjoy.

Great video! I love the bridge swinging open starting around 3:36 or so. Looks like an automobile on the wrong side of the gate at N. McDowell at 16:26. Anyway I watch NWP crossing at Haystack every Monday night and Thursday night, so it's great to see really beautiful footage of where they go during the day.

Those Safetran Hybrid bells once completely lined downtown Santa Rosa. Now they’re all sitting in Healdsburg awaiting reuse or scrapping. Interestingly enough, the next crossing east of the location shown in this video, a pedestrian crossing, was completely renovated and fitted with a pair of brand new WCH mechanical bells.

Hey, just thought I'd throw this out there. There's a possibility of me coming out to California this summer. I also know your friends West Coast Rail, SMCM, and Newhall Yard Productions (I forget their actual names). And as usual, some magnificent footage here. You should consider doing railroad DVD's.

Great video man! I’m actually in the Petaluma area along these tracks for a few months. What’s typically the best time to catch them and how often they run?

In the northwestern pacific I found on google maps that they have sp gp9s and sd9s in the sidings

Yes, that's true. However, they are not owned by NWP. They're owned by Matt Munson, a private locomotive owner. Reporting marks on his equipment is BUGX.

I didn't know the SMART units were separable. I always thought they were permanently coupled back-to-back. Well, the more ya know! The looks of the trains seem to be dividing the minor group of railfans interested in the line. Personally I really like them.

They're good for shooting spots that NWP doesn't go, like down to San Rafael. They might be weird looking, but they're not the ugliest thing on rails. I spent the time shooting the DMUs mostly to showcase the line, not so much the DMUs themselves.

Thanks! I believe they go to Napa Jct roughly 2 to 3 times a week, if not more. They work Monday thru Friday...

@@SamLovesTrains Not necessarily. They work 5 days a week, but don't always run trains. When they run trains in which direction, I am not sure. To be honest, I am not 100% qualified to speak on the matter.

NWP runs to Napa Jct on Monday and Wednesday morning typically. CFNR's Napa switcher will go on duty around 0730 and switch local industries in the area. The Fairfield Job will show up later typically after 1200.

Great video! Love that the NWP still uses the bloody nose paint scheme. What days does the NWP operate? I'm going to be in San Rafael for a few days and if I can I'd love to get a video of some NWP operations.

Typically Mondays and Thursdays, but their schedule may have been shifted slightly due to overnight MoW work. I'm not aware of what they're doing this week but they usually go from napa jct to ignacio during the day and up to Petaluma at night

I drove over the grade crossing at 8:08 a few weeks back when me and my family were returning to San Jose from Sonoma. 1501 was parked in the fenced area to the left.

What locomotives does the NWP own? In addition to 1501, 1922, and 2009, don't they have another engine originally form the Tri-Cities Railway (TCRY 007)? I'm pretty sure it's a Baldwin VO-1000 rebuild. From what I've read, they never operate it for some reason and it always just sits at their headquarters. But from a recent Google street view picture from 2017, it was not in the yard. Do they actually run it occasionally or has it left the NWP? Also, how do you find out when the NWP is running? Do they follow a schedule or not? Can someone please tell me where I can find such information (schedule, updates, radio frequency, etc.) so I know when they are coming? Cool video, great to see the NWP running again!

The NWP uses 1501 and 2009 as the main runners. They also own the TCRY 007, but don't use it because it needs a lot of mechanical rehab to get it to work. As for 1922, it isn't owned by NWP, but rather by Matt Munson. If I recall correctly, the lease expired a year, possibly 2 years ago. The 007 is still on the property, it has just been moved to allow for tank car storage. The reason I know when NWP is running is because I know a few of the guys that run the show. They run twice a week, but no specified days. They run from Ignacio to Lombard and back during daylight, and up to Petaluma at night. As for updates and radio frequency, I don't know. There is a forum on nwprr.net, but I don't know how many people still use it.

Yup, I remember seeing the ballot with cloverdale mentioned. I can't wait for it to happen. There are so many shots I'd love to get up there with a train.
