Due to circumstances related to COVID-19, NWP was able to make a trip north from the wye at Ignacio, up to Windsor to retrieve bulkhead flats being used in SMART's northward expansion project. Thanks to SMART suspending weekend operations, NWP was able to get out on the main during daytime hours. This is normally done only at night, after the last smart trains have gone.
Also new for the NWP, former UP RP20GE #2611 now carries a K5LA mounted in the D&RGW fashion, with the 3A and 5 bells reversed. I made a separate trip out to get recordings of this as well. Enjoy.

Man, those 1st Gen K5LA's always sound like magic! I see the crew was having a lot of fun with the horn shows too. I also see that an IAIS hopper somehow made it's way all the way out to the west coast. It seems with exception of FEC, Class 2 equipment doesn't make it that far out of its home region, and it's especially rare in the case of Iowa Interstate because not very often does their rolling stock get around outside of its operating territory even to places that aren't very far outside of its territory.

If you count humans having to walk up to the western causeway end control box or having to rowboat out to the center span swing bridge control room, it’s not exactly fully “automated”

Makes me homesick. Now that I live in the central valley, the only gensets that I see are the occasional Cali Northern red, white and blue jobs. They've been making more appearances south of Tracy with GP15 1570 in the past few weeks.

Hey did you know about Nwp partnering up with the GGRM or the golden Gate railroad museum and is holding historic cars and a steam engine along with another gp9 down in shellville

What business receives the tank cars? I figured the hopper cars are going to the feed mills in Petaluma?

Correct. The tank cars do not go to any business. Local refineries pay a flat rate (per car per diem) to store the tanks in Schellville. When the refineries want the cars, NWP takes them back out to interchange.

2:41 Glad to see a railroad is still using Safetran type 1 ebells! Did they buy the bells from Safetran or did they buy the bells from another railroad? And what kinds of bells are those at 3:53?

I have no idea where they came from. They were there when I pulled up to the crossing. The other bells are safetran mechanical's.

Are there any businesses or future businesses north of Petaluma for the NWP? Would you know how far north trains have traveled lately. NWP, not SMART Transit?

I'm afraid that's a question I'm not qualified to answer. As for how far they've gone, I think just to Windsor.

There are possibilities, but the truck-heavy climate in California, and SMART being a nuisance to freight is an uphill battle.

I am so confused by the "musical locomotives" routine. First they are back to back(2009 leading), then nose to nose(still 2009 leading somehow) , then back to back again(2611 leading). Do you know why the swapping?

2009 is the only locomotive equipped with SMART's PTC system.

...and as the only current PTC equipped NWP locomotive, the 2009 must be the controlling unit of freight train running on SMAR’s Mainline sub between Ignacio and Sonoma County Airport (N. Santa Rosa)

Trevin Cholmondeley Generally we run roundtrip Brazos Sub M-W in AM from Ignacio to Napa JCT back to Ignacio, then M-Th nights on SMART mainline sub up to Petaluma (rare times up to Santa Rosa/Windsor) roundtrip back to Ignacio Wye (Novato). Extra moves happen on Tu-F and very occasionally weekends (like tomorrow AM).

hey since the GP9 (1922) does not have a PTC unit is that why they are not using it

Not necessarily, although the lack of PTC is a prohibiting factor. The reason they aren't using it is because the lease expired, and NWP chose to not renew it as it's no longer needed.
