For hiking deep into the park it is best to wait until the snow has melted and the mosquitoes are gone (Sept. 1) and before the snow might start falling (Sept. 2).

Our memories of this park and area also include snow and Winthrop. We ate lunch there--lovely little town before driving from east to west in mid-June and like you our visit was somewhat limited by snow. We did enjoy the overlooks we could stop at and a couple trails and the lack of crowds.

Late June to early July you can watch Venus set in the notch just left of the peak of the mountain (Coloanal Peak) right after sunset.

Such an underrated park, love visiting the North Cascades!!

Nice video, I liked how you clarified that Hwy 20 is not within the actual NP (only Cascade River Road goes inside the park to Cascade Pass trailhead). Rainy Lake is not especially hard to navigate to in the snow. Snowshoes aren't generally needed here in late spring/early summer, as the snow under the forest canopy is pretty hard except when it is in direct sunlight or right next to trees or large rocks. The trail is very flat, so the key is to not change your elevation as you contour around the hillside towards the lake. A GPS or altimeter helps a lot but really isn't essential, especially on a sunny day. Often there are cross country ski tracks or tracks from other hikers you can follow too. There is a bridge about halfway in that is essential to find, after that elevation loss or gain is not so critical; if you do go too high or low relative to the lake, it generally will become apparent as you get closer to the lake, because you'll see a lot more light through the trees from the direction of the lake.

Have hiked here for 31 years since moving from the east coast. It is fantastic.

This is the park I was stationed at Sedro Woolley, gateway to the park. Was at Mt.St.Helens when it erupted. Been to Alaska, Steheken. One of the best parks.

I think Hwy 20 Is the coolest hwy in the state and highly recommended driving from end to end and see everything the state has to offer view wise. Including a ferry ride, island hooping and climent changes.

Highway 20 is closed off during the winter due to avalanche dangers.

It is a remote park and probably the best place to put back the grizzly bear but there are stupid people everywhere and they probably won't be re introduced

Lake Chelan is pronounced wrong. It's pronounced she-lan, not shillin as in this video. This is coming from a local.
