You know you're in a car-oriented society...when a train station parking lot has its own shuttle bus. The LIRR equivalence would be a Suffolk Transit bus that only goes around the big Ronkonkoma parking lot. The reason North Philadelphia is no longer accessible is because of all that vandalism you saw that happened to that elevator. They shut them down around the time it also lost its Amtrak ticket office. If you thought that graffiti underpass was something, you should see the tunnel at 191st Street station on the (1). It's important to note that Cornwells Heights has more ridership only because you can get both on and off of Amtrak trains in both directions. Despite having 4 Southbound trains that serve North Philly, you can't actually take a train towards Harrisburg from there, which again, is another way of Amtrak telling you to NOT USE THIS STATION.

From what I've been reading. Amtrak would like to improve North Philadelphia. There's a speed restriction there that slows trains down to 60(inside tracks) and 50(outside tracks or 40 on track 4 within a 80mph zone. So the plan is to straighten those sections out so they could get rid of thosebspeed restrictions. Also Lehigh and Clearfield are horrible interlockings. So they need to be replaced as well. I feel like in the future. North Philadelphia will probably look similar to maybe Princeton Jct. Just two side platforms.

As a certified in North Philadelphia’s station user reckon list of things north Philadelphians want to happen in this station 1. A clean station 2. Cameras and doors on the tunnels so it’s safer from crimes 3. Rebuild the ticketing office of the Chestnut Hill line and the Trenton line/main line 4. rebuilding the original shelter of the chestnut hill line 5. New train station in the Redding trackage area 6. Re connection with the Broad Street line 7. get rid of strip mall 8. Get all Amtrak trains that pass by 8 except for Acela trains to stop 9. Get a New Jersey transit, Atlantic city line to make it stop here 10. Rebuild the missing track 11. Add doors and windows to the platform Shelters of the mainline/Trenton line 12. Add back the underpass for Chestnut Hill line and put cameras to make it safer 13. Keystone trains will now skip 30th St. station after these upgrades are finished 14. Remove old North broad station and make it museum for Reading railroad 15. Change the name of North Philadelphia station to N. Philadelphia Transit Center 16. Level parking lot, so it goes back to how it used to be

I went to North Philadelphia station by mistake once in 2019 (so I was one of those barely 5 passengers per day). My SEPTA train from East Falls to Penn Medicine Station was actually a very delayed train to Trenton and i didn’t notice until we left 30th Street the wrong way and, North Philadelphia was the next stop. It is a scary station even in morning ‘rush hour’. There are no audible announcements of trains and I missed the next Chestnut Hill train back to town as I didn’t realize those platforms are so far and I couldn’t negotiate the stinky tunnel quickly enough. I eventually got a train from Trenton back to 30th Street. Commute from hell!

Miles, I used to go up in that area all the time. At one time in my life, I used to commute north of the city, taking the BSL to Lehigh then get on SEPTA at North Broad because North Broad was the first station north on SEPTA that was out of the CCP Zone so I could use the cheaper Cross County Pass. There were a few times i got off at North Broad heading home but would then walk up to the North Philadelphia station to take the Trenton Line north to visit some friends outside the city. THAT was when that area was not that great. Miles, you honestly had me VERY concerned. THAT is a very very dangerous neighborhood now. Honestly, I am happy you are safe. I would not walk around that area now going from station to station. Great video and history though. Please be safe.

It was Henry H Houston (pronounced the NYC way, not the Texas way) who developed Chestnut Hill. He was a Pennsy VP in charge of planning their line through Northwest Philly. The minute he had the line nailed down, he quit the Pennsy to become a real estate developer, because he'd bought vast amounts of land along the right of way, using his advance knowledge of where the line was going to go.

8:07 - "Look at that catentary, it's just horizontal." / "Oh, geeze." This exchange, coupled with "the worst-engineered line on the Pennsylvania Railroad" about 20 seconds earlier, comes across as a putdown of the appearance of the OCS. In truth, it's a beautifully designed solution for leveraging forces in the contact and messenger wires to match the contact wire to the relatively sharp curve radius, without having pull-off wires splayed all over the place to extraneous poles. That branch may have been shoehorned in on the cheap, but clearly it still exhibits elegant engineering solutions to complex problems.

Thanks for showing an old picture of the original Chestnut Hill West cutoff station platform as I remember it in the late 70's, early 80's. I would occasionally use the interchange from the Broad street when I was attending Temple. Even back then North Philly was a ghost town station. That whole surrounding neighborhood has been neglected and economically depressed for decades. Your other commenters are correct, it was a little brave of you even going there. And while I agree with your (admittedly well-placed) laments, I also know that the entities involved, such as leaders at City Hall, or Amtrak, both have bigger fish to fry. In the past, they have devoted resources to try and "clean up" the station, only to have their efforts trashed because the station is located in an economic war zone. So they've sort of given up and moved on. The elevator is your evidence of that. Undoubtedly built to accommodate disabled concerns and probably paid with federal dollars. Look at it now. When the neighborhood recovers, maybe the station will get a second chance. It is still very well placed for local mass transit connections.

I'm a sophomore at temple, and I ride the regional rail Trenton line on a weekly basis. I've always wondered what this ghetto a*s station looked like, so it was so interesting to see it from a walk-through perspective. I can vouche that not many people get on or off at this station, but I thought that was mostly due to the fact that it isn't a popular destination for people that don't live there, and very close to the city (so most people just drive, take the bus, or bike to the city.) Great video guys, and yes, the name "hallway of doom" is perfectly fitting for that hallway😂

I saw the station between 1972 and 1974 when I attended college at La Salle Collage in the Olney section of Philadelphia. At that time the station still had the head house as well as a fully open concourse tunnels from the Broad Street Subway to both North Philadelphia Pennsylvania station and the old Reading North Philadelphia station. As the area got worse and there was crime in the concourse SEPTA decided to close both concourses. As noted this station lost its main function as a stop for western long distance trains not having to go through 30th street station. Even then the station was not well maintained. You did see the Amtrak new headhouse station that was built to replace the old station however due to low useage they closed the maned station. As you noted the station should have more service such as having the Atlantic City trains stop and more local trains to New York City. However this station would need major cleaning and updating to be a good station for local people to use. As to the parking lot, it is for Amtrak use but due to the crime in the area no one would trust their car being there when they return.

Yes, it's amazingly frustrating that neither the Amtrak connection to the vicinity nor the SEPTA connections between various lines and Amtrak are valued. It' super close to where we live and would be easier to access than 30th Street.

Thanks for the reports on two stations that I didn't realize were served by Amtrak and I ride the Pennsylvanian a few times a year. Always wanted to ride the CHW line to pass through the small platform section of the North Philadelphia station. Would like to see the Pennsylvanian and Keystones bypass Philadelphia via the 'Pittsburgh subway'. Realize these trains carry a lot of people to PHL - so how about a 30th St to North Philadelphia connecting shuttle train

Maybe give riders free passage on the Chestnut Hill West or Trenton Lines to and from 30th Street from North Philly! Direct Broad Street Line access is nice to have too. Or maybe there'd just need to be a reverse branch situation where some trains end in Philly and others travel through to New York...

As a New Yorker, there are stations in the worst parts of the Bronx, better than North Philly. Seems like when the factories closed, the whole area was abandoned. I hate to use that station, when coming and going from New York.

I was on a Keystone last month that was fine running in pull mode but was throwing weird warnings at the crew in push mode after we left 30th street. We got past Overbrook and then they had to give up and reverse all the way back up the rarely-used third leg of the wye at Zoo tower to turn the train back around. So I got a rare glimpse of the underpass that connects North Philly with the line out to Harrisburg and Pittsburgh. If we could have just used the underpass in the first place none of that would have been necessary.

I always thought it would be great if the NJT Atlantic City line would stop at North Philly so you can connect to Amtrak to NYC. That would save a ton of time going all the way to 30th St to make the connection.

It is, in a way. The derelicts from the neighborhood have finally vandalized it as much as the could. You fix it up and more people may use the station, making the station a magnet for robbery and murder. Then the station will just be vandalized again so there is also that.

I use this station! If it is nice out I can ride my bike here for Amtrak to NYC etc. if not I take the El to 30th. I use it more for Septa weekend adventures. An ex-GF used to do the CHW shuffle or park here to go to NYC all the time. I walked around the corner, one day, and there was a guy pooping right on the stairs. And there were people up there too on the platform. It is the wildest, skankiest station I’ve ever used. Temple (ex-Reading) is really close too. This area is really well connected and one day will be booming again.

Only through the Cornwells Heights mini review, but I've been hoping for years for a "Metropark" style station up there. They already have a ton of land for parking; they just need the incentive to build a regional station for Amtrak & SEPTA.

With three different rail lines, it has a ton of transfer potential. Plus i think it should be the stop for NYC to Pittsburgh trains, not 30th Street. Probably not till that's rebuilt as HSR though.

On my way to the WTYP live show, I took Amtrak from LNC to PHL for the first time in a long time. Upon arrival, I misremembered how to get to the subway. Having thought that the subway access was INSIDE 30th st station I followed the septa signs and wandered to the regional rail area of the station. I got a septa key, and managed to get on a train heading to... Trenton. It said VIA CENTER CITY, so i don't think it was that stupid of me. I've been deprived of transit most my life. Anyways as soon as the train started moving I knew something was wrong because we were leaving the same way I came in, and the tracks didn't lead underground. Also the seats were way too nice. I was definitely not on a subway, and definitely not going to center city. So I got off at the first stop. North philly station. Couldn't believe it because I'd already watched this video! Somehow my Lancaster ass knew exactly where I was. I quickly found my way to the actual subway and I had it all figured it all out from there. Go birds

That little SEPTA bus was close to what we ran in Milwaukee during State Fair when regular patrons couldn't Park in their Lots so we'd meet them and drive them to their cars parked on the street a mile away. Since covid between reduced Riders and lack of staff it's all abandoned. Some of the scenes of the virtually abandoned concourses is so similar to a bus station they built in NW Milwaukee to connect with feeder lines to industrial parks and within 5 years it was trashed. Today and auto parts store occupies the space. The tile work there is identical to some of the exterior at the former Northridge Mall that has been abandoned for 20 years on the far corner of the city. For quiet Amtrak stations 10 years ago I rode out to visit a friend and use the stop at Holdredge NE. I was the only passenger a lighting and boarding in early February and the train comes racing up like it's not going to stop then throws out the anchor in a swirl of brake shoe smoke. The conductor has to run in and see if anyone is sitting and waiting but the two ladies were waiting for the westbound train. Nice depot with old wooden benches and a vintage wooden phone booth. No agents on duty and half the building is the Chamber of Commerce and I believe a real estate agency. Having retired from our Transit System after 37 years I couldn't help but laugh about the three items that need to be cleaned up. Sadly our rudderless leadership let our buses become rolling bathrooms so you could even find this on the inside of our equipment. Thanks for the analysis of Philadelphia's least used stations
