North Race Review

In this video I'm gonna pick-up a North SLALOM Race 7.7 (2023) at "vandenbergsurf.nl" for a review and test it on the water for you guys.
As you may know the Slalom Race is the FIN sail.
In the review I'm gonna look at the sail it self, the rigging and the performance on the water.
I've been wanting to test this sail for a while as it's the first big revolution in the making of the windsurf sail since a long time.
After all the testing and returning the sail to "vandenbergsurf.nl" I'm about to find out something is different from what I had expected and which explains a lot.
For this review I'll use my medium slalom board (Starboard iSonic 107L 2015) and 37cm Sonntag SL-PRO.

I,ve had also the pleasure to test a North Sails, only the Freerace 7.7, mast 490 with a Fanatic JAG 125. Really magic, stable as concrete, plane insane! Had a little issue with the cambers when rigging, but will be solved with the production series. Looking forward to the freespeed!! Thanx for this video, keep it up!

Hi Tim (aka: the biggest North fan in the world), Thank you, great to hear. I've been told that the proto types didn't have the velcro yet to keep them in place. The production and some of the proto types do have the velcro which solved the problem. I had no problems whatsoever with the (inflatable) cambers system. Really interesting new direction.... I used a north x-over. Sooooo Light and so much control. Really amazing

I love the ease of the sail. I also noticed plaining quicker then other surfers.

But the price, including new mast and extension, is a big investment.

Hi @@wilcootte7408, It's exactly the same with the North Race. I have a feeling that new material and the 3D design make it really efficient especially in light to medium gusty wind conditions. See you on the water.

@@wilcootte7408 very true...... But I don't blame them. What North did with the new and innovative sails in windsurfing and foiling was a bold and daring move. They have heavily invested in a relatively small market. The price you pay is probably very close to the cost price.... I'm afraid they don't make any money on it right now. Hopefully in he future if they can generate bigger production numbers so the price may go down and they can get some return on investment. See you on the water.

How did you attached the Severne boom on MDM mast ? That would be interesting to see as well

Hi Marko, attaching a Severne race boom is a non issue as Severne has the tapered mast for quite a few years. The Severne mast is at the bottom a SDM mast then immediately transforms into MDM just above the extension up to the boom and above the boom the Severne APEX mast transforms from MDM to RDM. Besides that the Severne booms have a big rubber pad on the inside so no problem at all there. See you on the water.

@@Windsurfcoach Thanks for explanation. I see this to me, as main problem, having 5 Probooms with S2 Maui Sails boom heads.. They are not so flexible. Will you try North foil sail as well ?

Hi @@markocernic8659, you are welcome. I don't know if it's easy to swap boom heads on the S2 booms? Otherwise that might be a quick and cheap fix. If I can get my hands on a North Foil sail I will most definitively do a review on that as well. See you on the water!!!

Its 2024 and they are letting normal sailors loose on a prototype sail? Really? This sail was launched in Spring 2023.

Hi Phil, thanks for your input. I agree. If you really want to give a realistic picture of how the sail performs to the people you need to provide the latest models for testing. I had been provided with a North Race 7.7 and a Freerace 6.8 for testing. I knew the Freerace was an older proto type, but I didn't know any better than that the Race 7.7 would be the production version. Only after all the testing had been done and after returning the sail I learned that the 7.7 was also an older proto type...... I could also hardly believe that North had released a sail for production with still room for improvement and those silly little issues. What I know from North in the old days is that only the highest standards are good enough and nothing less. I hope I can get my hands on the production 7.7 soon so I can do an update on the Race for the channel. See you on the water!!
