I want to see Asshai by the shadowlands on the screen that would be amazing. The place sounds so dark and dangerous.
@Detheroc420
@Detheroc420 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah GRRM said it will never be shown or expanded on. Asshai and the Stygai at the heart of darkness are meant to be a mystery and left as an imposing and dangerous place with no real clue about what's going on there. Especially the Stygai, does some ancient evil live there? Is there a portal to the seven hells itself? We will never know
@factbeaglesarebest
@factbeaglesarebest 3 жыл бұрын
Well you won’t. It’s specifically shrouded in mystery because it’s so far from any POV char. Remember, GRRM specifically writes in a way that shows any exposition or context is tied to the POV characters biases and ignorance/knowledge. I doubt we will see a POV from Quaithe and the concept Asshai is likely just a simple place of what could be called “heathland” and unconventional culture that is left as what we here due to distance and lack of first hand knowledge: EVEN “Fire and Blood” is WRITTEN FROM A MAESTER- a Targaryen supporter even.

Fire & Blood revealed a new island chain far west of the Summer Islands - even west of Lonely Light's longitude. Three small uninhabited islands, the largest only a third the size of Dragonstone. The seas between them and other lands were filled with terrible storms (and possibly sea monsters), but the isles themselves were pleasant enough - albeit small. Plenty of clean water, edible fruits and nuts (previously unknown), wild pigs to hunt for food. There were some lizards the size of deer with poisonous bites, but they were pretty slow (think Komodo dragons from real life). There's a moratorium on wiki updates for them until December 20th, however. I don't know if you want to do a future short update video on the Farman expedition.

What's most interesting is that a few decades later, Corlys Velaryon visited Asshai as part of a grand series of voyages of exploration. He saw what he thought was Elissa Farman's ship the Sun Chaser in the harbor. If it was indeed the Sun Chaser, then it means that Elissa managed to cut through the unknown opposite side of the world and loop back into known lands.

And again, with regard to budget, there are make-up artists, costumes, actors, filming sites, writing a coherent script(can’t just tour the location in a show), etc. Here’s an example: a lot easier to talk about or write about people eating sailors who are in their midst than to run episodes about it. You guys are letting your imagination interfere with practical aspects of a program.

It' s just my thought. But the way westerossi ot essosi describe far east continent sounds to me more like they don't know much about that region. Like European people in middle age who said that there are dragons in Asia. I think it is possible that there are more great civilizations over the Asshai but they may just don't know about them thus it became some sort of myth.
@hexkobold9814
@hexkobold9814 5 жыл бұрын
True... I remember reading "Germania" by the Roman ethnographer Tacitus, which was a compendium of information about the Germanic peoples beyond the northern borders of the Roman Empire. At one point, he gets to the areas beyond the Finns in northeastern Europe (around modern northern Russia) and says the people there are said to be animal-human hybrids, but dismisses it as rumors. The reality is probably that the hunter-gatherer people there wore animal skins to keep warm in the harsh, cold environment, and paired with neighboring peoples considering them uncivilized and savage, the tall tales of "animal people" spread to distort the truth. Maester Yandel makes a similar hypothesis about the scary lizard-men called the Shrykes living beyond Yi Ti's Five Forts - Are they really just humans wearing lizard skins? A lot of these places in the far east of Westeros - Nefer, Mussovy, K'Dath, Carcosa, Bonetown, the Cities of the Bloodless Men, the City of Winged Men, the Shadowlands... They're all described as having necromancers and sorcerers and blood mages and demon hunters. These lands are almost the equivalent of Siberia in our world, though - a vast, bleak landscape beyond the "known world" that, like eastern Essos, no one in the "known world" seems to know or care much about - The ancient Chinese didn't seem interested in determining the northern limits of Asia. We do know that Siberia was and is inhabited by animist tribes, though. What if all the talk about scary wizards beyond the Grey Waste are actually just normal people practicing animism, perhaps with some fantasy magic thrown in, whose mostly harmless shamans have been sensationalized by fearful neighbors who are frightened and appalled by their cultural differences?
@theprogram863
@theprogram863 3 жыл бұрын
Quite right... but in this one case there may be more to it than that. The Septons are working from holy books written when the Andals were living in Andalos, having just left the Axe. If the Seven Pointed Star is going to give us informed commentary on anything, it should be the region it was written in. Plus, look at the geography of Essos. You've got a realm of dark magic (Nefer), then a dark wasteland where monsters live (Mossovy and the Thousand Islands), and then a realm of mist, then darkness, then chaos. The interior of the continent (east of the Bleeding Sea and the Five Forts) is unknown. Coming from the south, you get a realm of dark magic (Asshai), then a dark wasteland where monsters live (shrykes, bloodless men, and winged men), and then a realm of darkness (The Shadow and Stygai). Note also the linguistic similarities among peoples otherwise separated by great distance and formidable geographic obstacles. It seems like some magical cataclysm wrapped the whole far, far east of Essos in darkness. The wild magic (and the promise of loot from a fallen civilization) lures experts in dark magic to study there. People living too close for too long become sick and if they settle too close, their descendants develop mutations. The immediate vicinity of the disaster itself is totally uninhabitable. If this sounds familiar, it's because something similar happened with the Doom of Valyria. There as well the place is uninhabitable, and people who live too close become mutated (Mantarys, for example, or people who spend too much time on the Demon Road). So my guess is that some insane magical calamity hit that whole part of the world. Something much much worse than the Doom of Valyria. Probably there's some kind of epicenter to the east of Mossovy. It's either very similar to the same phenomenon near Asshai, or it's actually the northmost portion of a gigantic blasted region that reaches all the way down the continent.

Can you please make a video comparing the size of Westros to Europe or any place on Earth just to have a relative expectation for Westros size.

Has anyone ever thought about the actual globe of this world? I mean if you really look at it North of the wall has to the Northern Pole. and the arctic circle would come down to about the top of Essos. With Westeros being about the size of South America and Sothoryos being as big as it is and being like the Rain Forests this Planet has to be 2 to 3 times bigger than the Earth.

All of these other lands just make westeros seem smaller and smaller- as well as the most mundane.

I think they got the map upside down. With how it's being described, the island of Ib should be called Ibstraulia.

How many hominid species do you think exists in Planetos?? Two races of giants, children of the forest, humans (more than one? normal people, the green people and the dwarves)... I'm curious if GRRM has a list of the different species...

Interesting ... When I was reading it I always assumed the Ibbennese were more like eskimos ? Not just Caucasian dwarfs... more ethnic. I just imagined a lot of short folk wearing furs and living in an icy place, weird
