Northern Soul and Wigan Casino The One Show BBC1 May 2nd 2011

A short film about Wigan Casino and the popularity of Northern Soul in the 1970s. All these little featurettes are beginning to look/sound the same to me. I've yet to see a film about Northern Soul that makes it look cool - I'm desperate to convince my kids that it was very cool! Maybe you had to be there at the time...On the plus side though, I had no idea that Christopher Eccleston was a Northern Soul fan and cited '7 days too long' as a favourite. (It may be the lighting, but the 45 that Russ plays at the beginning looks like it hasn't seen a cleaning cloth in years.)

I was a member of the Catacombs in Wolverhampton which preceded the Casino and ran from 1968 to 1974. Amazing club KTF

We are a week from 2020 and am pleased to report Northernsoul events are of plenty all over the world. What a music scene it is definitely great music great dancing and great people KTF David from Scotland

As a 67yr old veteran of the Wheel and the mecca (could never get in the casino) northern soul is not only national,its global! A mate in new york said an event was arranged and tickets sold out in 40minutes for a 3,000+ venue. Same in Stuttgart,Germany and Newquay in Cornwall (the best one imo) Its bigger than ever.

Did the wigan council regret knocking it down. It would have been a landmark tourist destination and brought revenue to Wigan. My opinion.

There was lots of northern soul clubs Besides the twisted wheel we went to There was one in Oldham called the top Twenty club that was 15 years before Wigan casino

I was playing some of the tracks you call northern soul well before Wigan Casino at the Winford civic hall. I heard a lot of this at the Golden Torch in Tunstall.so it didn't start at Wigan. Just saying .

You're right, in fact it ended at Wigan in about '75. That's when the cat got out of the bag and all the divs turned up to dance to pop and fall asleep when the Pro Plus wore off. Shame.

Wigan is 13 miles from Little Hulton where Christopher Eccleston was brought up, he went to the same school as me. I now have a pub in Wigan and pass what used to be the casino pretty much every day.

@andychatt23 Yes, Gerry Marshall and Russ Winstanley always did put "fame" and profit before the actual music, hence the endless tabloid newspaper articles, Top of the Pops appearance, TV documentary etc. etc. The only pity is that so many punters went along with it all and saw nothing wrong with selling out the Northern scene's long-held principles for a namecheck in some cheap rag. This toe curling embarrassment is the end result!

You've got to feel a bit sorry for Russ, He is asked that classic - almost impossible to answer to everybody's satisfaction - question, "What is Northern Soul?" His explanation is complete in 20 seconds flat. In reality, his response probably lasted for several minutes, but it was edited down so heavily that any casual One Show viewers would have been left completely mystified (assuming that they were even vaguely interested)

Don't forget Tony Blackburn Doc, not only did he visit there with other knobs such as, Marc Almond and Mick Hucknell, but they even played that Tony Blackburn shite (can't remember the cover up name, but who cares!) Let's not mention all of the pop crap played there either!

For clarity it's actually Dave Carne rather than Pete - can't be bothered to change the account. Must say this IS about the most awful TV pieces on Northern I've seen though.

northern soul started in Stoke on Trent at the Torch and the reason it was called Northern soul was to differentiate for soul played down in London I wish they would get their facts right

He's talking complete rot. Firstly Nobody did that cross feet thing that the ktf brigade seem to do whatever the record is. Secondly Nobody thew talc all over the place in the golden era.these "facts" are held to be true because they are constantly brought up by people who weren't there Didn't Russ once say that the punters stayed awake all night by drinking Lucozade , not by taking drugs? That's a ridiculous statement.If, say there were 1000 people in the Casino and everybody who had taken some type of amphetamine was magically removed, there would have been barely 50 people left.

drwhatson please get over it Wigan Casino is the most famous northern soul club there's ever has and ever will be.Unfortunately for you there is nothing you can do about it, all your negative comments matter not one jot. It must be making you ill by now, let it go! If only the Mecca had been an allnighter and not a chicken in a basket nightclub with a small room upstairs that may have got a bit more acclaim, but alas it wasn't to be.

Let's get this absolutely CLEAR...... The "so_called" purists hate sharing it yeah ??????? So that being the case there could only be ONE ORIGINAL FAN...!!!!!!!! And that was whoever stumbled across it first...... Makes total sense yeah.... But no cos it was shared by him,her,them etc. Word of mouth grew and grew till it was (like it or not common knowledge)... I think what the purists hate is it travelling south of Birmingham.....!!!!! I myself am from Bristol, N.S hardly reached us, but from odd pocket.. So for the purists morons let's put this into perspective... Irrespective of where your from if the music touches your heart AND soul your part of the fraternity. Simple as. And don't give me any bullshit about those who NEVER WENT TO WIGAN. or anywhere else for that matter.. Some who love this music weren't even born then. Hardly their fault... So purists get your heads out of your arses, and remember SOMEONE introduced YOU to the scene..!!!!!!!

The problem is to many handbaggers. 50+ with no where else to go so they go to a Northern do. They only dance to the same 200 records the DJs play to keep the dance floor full(not blaming them)consequently the scene has gone stale. The tails wagging the dog. Yes agree everyone is welcome but now the hunger for rare and underplayed records has gone. I was queuing for the Ritz in Brighouse and many people were complaining that “last month they played records we don’t know” FFS

Whenever they make films about Wigan they get it so wrong it makes me cringe. They fill the studio up with the kind of tossers that ruined the whole thing, turning up by the coachload

@t0mme1981 I'm an upper class southener. I went from the first night 'till late 74. Nobody would have given a fig what class you were, or where you were from if you dug the whole thing and didn't behave like a sightseer. And yes, you would have loved it.The first two years were special.

Many just look at the nights of filming, not realising that most of the real regulars couldn't give a toss for anything but the music, didn't want to be there with the lights on, and buggered off to Mr M's on those nights..

I hated poxy disco - the Bee Gees and other cruds of the 70's - and I still do. At least NS had authenticity with superb tunes like "Do I love you" - real music!

"Best disco in the world" my arse! (Bloody 'Studio 54' was no competition to ANY half-decent UK Soul club in any case, as it was mere vehicle for non-Soul celebrities like Bianca Jagger, Rod Stuart etc. to show off in!) Typically this so-called "poll result" was based entirely on membership numbers - as if that had any bearing on musical quality! How much longer do we have to put up with this ludicrous Wigan-esque propaganda? It does the actual music no favours at all IMO.
