From my understanding the big popularity of this tune stems from the fact it was the last record played at the Wigan Cassino. On the Casino's last night the DJ played the traditional "3 before 8" (Dean Parrish 'I am on my way', 'Time Will Pass You by Tobi Legend and Tony Radcliffe 'Long After the Night is All Over') the Crowd would not budge and demanded an encore. The DJ complied and played them again but still the crowd would not go, It was an All nighter but it was now passed closing time, sensing that the crowd was in delirium it he needed to break the spell of the "3 before 8" so he randomly put his hand in the record box and played what ever record was selected, this was to be the Last Record played at the Legendary Wigan Cassino and that record was Frank Wilson's 'Do I Love You."

It seems like it was a very cool thing. I'm just glad they got to hear such great music-kinda' keeping the torch alive. Besides, Motown was my first love.

Hey Greg long time no see. My bad. This song is so good and was HUGE among kids here in the 70s. Copies were sold, and still are, for big money. Poor guy never saw a cent and ended his days as a janitor, unsung, by and large. He had no idea thousands of British kids were dancing all night to him.

Hey Dawn, it's good to hear from you. I just love this kind of music but I grew up on Motown so it's kind of embedded in my blood..

How nice to see someone react to rare northern soul. Would love you to react to gloria jones original 1964 version of tainted love. Discovered by a british northern soul d.j in the states looking for obscure records to play over here. It became the biggest record on the scene. A young mark almond heard another d.j playing it and covered it . Gloria is virtually unheard of but hers wipes the floor with soft cell. She later married marc bolan of T. Rex.

Loved your northern soul reaction. Try suspicion by the originals. Do I love was part of the Wigan stomper style.

Interesting! If there were 250 copies pressed up then 247 were "disposed" of and so one of the remaining three sold to a devoted northern soul fan for £100,000 (about 128,000 US dollars) in 2020.Northern soul records go for big money nowadays and I have spent big money myself on them but the line for most of us collectors would be drawn much before any such amount was ever invested

in the 1940s the biggest american airbase was built in the northwest of England in the 50s and 60s the the Americans who where based there brought there soul records took them to the local clubs and the locals loved it and adopted it creating northern soul the reason it sounds like Motown is because Motown bought up many small record labels and cherry picked the artist and song writers to create the Motown sound in America at the time small independent record labels where in different states so it only got played on local radio depending what state you lived depended on what you would hear on the local stations and many did not get national air time so when the troops brought their records here we got the collective from all over the states Motown was born out of this music and along the same idea but they could give it national coverage hence Motown's success web search the Motown artist you will find many where signed to independent labels before Motown northern soul lives on here with many clubs who have a northern soul night my favorite club as a teenager Wigan casino but i also went to the twisted wheel and the torch clubs so seeing somebody reacting to it now and enjoying it like i do is wonderful to end with i will use the northern soul motto KEEP THE FAITH

I love this song so much I wrote a novel about it - Palace Records. No sales links - but if you read it I hope you enjoy it. From the publisher: In the heart of the city, Izzy Cranshaw faces a crossroads. As the owner of Palace Records in Manchester, she's struggling to keep her beloved vinyl haven alive after the tumultuous past few years. With her team by her side and personal challenges weighing on her, Izzy's life takes an unexpected turn. Amidst family drama and financial worries, a proposal to buy Palace Records emerges, forcing Izzy to make a life-altering choice. In a desperate bid to save her shop, Izzy delves into the world of house clearances and car boot sales. There, she discovers the remarkable legacy of Alan Hunt, a music enthusiast whose story mirrors her own. She embarks on a search for a rare Northern Soul record but will she find the soundtrack to her life? As Izzy and her friends unravel Alan's mysterious past, they embark on a journey of self-discovery, love, and the enduring magic of music. Secrets are unveiled, truths confronted, and unexpected love blooms. Just when it seems all is lost, a hidden treasure offers hope. But Izzy's personal battles are far from over. She must mend her fractured relationships, facing revelations that could reshape her family dynamics forever. "Palace Records" is an uplifting story of resilience, music's transformative power, and the importance of embracing the truth. Discover a story of love, truth, Northern Soul and the enduring magic of vinyl records in this heart-warming novel.
