Walk around the island village Northern Tsushima Island (Nagasaki Prefecture) / A village with art-like stone walls and huts
A border island lying on the sea 138km from Fukuoka City via Iki. It is located 49.5km from Busan, South Korea, across the Western Channel from the Western Channel. Originally it was a connected island, but it is now divided into two islands, north and south, by digging the Ofunakoshi Strait in the Edo period and the Manzeki Isthmus in the Meiji period. Approximately 90% of the entire island is mountainous with an altitude of 300 to 500 m, and is covered with mountainous areas including primeval forest. Tsushima means the island of Tsu (port), and has been a transportation hub as a window to convey the culture of the continent since primitive and ancient times. In the ancient ritual system, one country was formed, and Kokufu and Kokubunji were also set up. After the Muromachi period, Mr. Sou became the island owner and worked to establish a diplomatic and trade system with Korea. It became a fortified area from the middle of the Meiji era, and artillery batteries were built in various parts of the island, and freedom of access was restricted until after World War II. Since the Great Showa Consolidation, Kamitsushima, Kamiagata, and the northern three towns of Mine have formed Kamiagata-gun, and Izuhara, Mitsushima, and Toyoda's southern three towns have formed Shimoagata-gun. As a result, 2 counties and 6 towns merged to form Tsushima City, 1 island and 1 city. In addition to being selected as a Japanese heritage "Iki, Tsushima, Goshima on the border", materials related to the Joseon Tongsinsa who headed to Edo via Tsushima were registered in the UNESCO "World Record", and from South Korea in 2018. The number of tourists in Japan has exceeded 400,000 annually, and the island is attracting attention as a border island, with the start of a "mixed flight" in which domestic passengers also synergize with international passenger ships. Efforts are also underway to expand the exchange population, such as regional academic collaboration that makes use of local resources such as nature and culture, and promotion of hands-on vacation rentals. (See "Shimadas")
This time, we will visit the villages on the northern west coast of the island. The warehouses that are characteristic of the Tsushima village can also be seen here. The villages of Tsushima often experience big fires, and it is customary to store important things necessary for living to protect the property of the house in a warehouse built away from the residence where there is a risk of shipping. be. This warehouse is used properly according to what is stored, such as clothes, vessels, and farm tools. The characteristic of the north is that there is no stone roof as seen in the south, the eaves are not large, and it is a very simple form. In addition, small buildings such as algae huts (funaya) that store seaweed used as fertilizer for agriculture can be seen in Qinghai and Kisaka in the old Minemachi. On the other hand, for those who live, all the places are characterized by stone walls, the upper private houses are equipped with a covered gate, and the main house is equipped with a ceremonial entrance to welcome guests, as if it were a strict source. It is interesting to see the townscape of the samurai residence, which looks like it was brought into a rural area.

Love the stone walls especially at 9:36! And the cactus on top of the wall at 14:17 looks great! Very interesting to see all the different storage huts. What is that on top of the mountain at 18:25? 👍😊

Thank you for your comment 😊 Villages where you can see such warehouses are rare in Japan. The building on the last hill is the observatory.
