Story number two person, I would agree with all North's advice, but I would also add this: if you want to see your minis painted, but haven't got the motivation or will to do it, the only solution is that you have to MAKE YOURSELF sit down and paint. There will come an evening when you're at a loss of what to do - the series you were watching is over, or you've finished your video game, and you're scratching around for a new thing. Even if your brain argues "I could paint?" "NO, I CANT BE BOTHERED. DO THAT TOMORROW MAYBE", just make yourself do it. If it helps, set out all your painting stuff ready to go when you ARE motivated, then when that point comes, you've got no excuse. Once you've started, you'll most likely get into it and carry on. If you don't, at least you tried. Ice had many painting slumps where I do nothing for a month or more, and forcing myself back into it always works. Hope this works for you, too!

So, not quite a 40k story since I don't play it, but the Jensen stories reminded me of someone I've played Battletech with a few times. So to start things out, let me say that this person isn't a full on Jensen but has a few qualities of one. Namely, they have a bad habit of "forgetting" a few rules for very specific modes of play, specifically the ones that they like to use the most. See, in Battletech you can either focus on just playing with the iconic mechs of the series, or you can go for a total war scenario with full compliments of support armor, ground troops and air assets. I've mostly played with just mechs but this person just always has to field their platoons of troops, five or six tanks and a couple of air units with just their two light mechs. Now, I don't mind someone wanting to expand on how they play, my problem is the fact they didn't mention or left vague little rules that would've made their army manageable and given me a fair fight and maybe even an edge. For example: mechs can occupy the same hex as one non-mech unit. Once you are neither unit can fire their weapons at the other but your mech can mech melee attacks on them, IE stomp a mud hole! They neglected to tell me that weapons that can deal damage to multiple areas of a target have the potential to cripple a vehicle. And they sure as heck didn't mention that MG's wipe out ground troops like a fat man with a tray of cupcakes. All of this is stuff I had to learn on my own and threw back in their face when I was able to roll over their platoons and tank column.

He reminds me of that one you had a few months back where the guy said he was a "being of pure logic" before he went nuts at a Catan table. Sadly some of the most awkward and difficult nerds you'll see are the least equipped people- mentally- to handle these combative nerdy tabletop hobbies and sometimes an explosive resentment comes out and shocks everyone around them. It's not common but I've seen these people snapping before.

Even though I had a friend to help me out with painting tips when I first got into 40k, the way I got more comfortable with putting paint on models was to paint old bits of terrain first. It was old pieces of wrecked buildings that my friend didn’t care about.

Nuln oil is literally cheaters wash lol. I LOVE it, I paint base colors on my guardsmen and slap nuln oil on them and even without dry brushing they genuinely look great. I can do a single guardsmen in 15 minutes still to good quality.

Knights can be taken in any imperial army 1 titanic knight, or 3 armigers max though

Had a tiny hobby nightmare this week - bought a massive haul of stuff off a local lad selling his 40K/30k bits. Lovely lad, gave me amazing prices but a couple of the models on sprue were incomplete and I had to decline those ones. I also got a couple of partially assembled vehicles and didn't realise till I got home that he'd literally clipped stuff off the sprue badly then stuck it together with an ocean of poly cement. One of them I'm just going to have to green stuff over the gaps because I'll not be able to disassemble it without destroying it. Not a huge hobby nightmare, and even with that got some bargains, but I was just amazed this dude claimed he had been in the hobby for over 2 decades and didn't have a clue how to clean his models up.

Necron Player- Read 'The Infinite and the Divine' probably the best Necron lore there is, I still use Trazyn in my list despite him being crap, on the back of that book. Tip for drybrushing, use a makeup brush. you can get these cheap from Home Bargains or anywhere like that. They're way softer and you'll get a nicer finish

To be a bit less intense, I think Jensen is a man who got used to taking shortcuts. At the expense of his standards. That includes rules, tactics and social situations. That makes people mad.

A noob question: i like my models outright assembled so...how do you paint areas unacessible by the brush. Like the zone between a necron immortal and its gauss cannon? Or zoned under marines capes and trenchcoats?

You know, in honesty, I get kicking Jensen out for the cheating and poor sportsmanship, but some of this stuff kinda feels like we were creeping into bullying territory. I can get it if all he did was complain and just be a sore loser, but some of the complaints feel really clique-ish with the "God, this guy is annoying" and "His jokes suck and his laugh is obnoxious" comments that the organizer was getting, almost like he wasn't "cool enough" to be part of their group. As a person with a genuine diagnosed anxiety disorder, I get how hard it can be with functioning while trying to make friends in group settings in a hobby you enjoy with people who are obviously better and more experienced than you, so maybe I'm coming at it with a tad bit more sympathy. His poor sportsmanship def deserved reprisal and I do thinking kicking him out was a net positive for the group, but hounding him to another store - where he may have fit in better with a new group and no reputation - felt like a bit much.

Honestly I feel awful for Jensen. He definitely seems like he has some social issues and probably has little to no friends outside the hobby (seems like he doesn’t really have friends in the hobby either). I do not disagree that the reputation he made for himself is his own fault but I don’t think it is all his fault. He is going to the store for the same reason as you TO HAVE FUN! All he is met with their seems to be absolute hatred towards him. The first story on this is a prime example where the only real crime was bringing a badly done proxy that seemed to not have even affected the outcome of the game. You talked shit about him behind his back when it seems to me that he was just trying too have a good time with you guys and even took his loss on the chin. OP said he was just talking crap on the phone but I genuinely see it from his point of view. Then when he finds another person to play in a new store you guys go out of your way to taint his reputation in that one as well when you dont even know what is happening in that game (both Jensen and his opponent could be having a good time). I understand the parts that are actual hobby nightmares and back OP on those but I just wanted to say that I feel really bad for Jensen because id he saw this video or watches this channel it’s just another part of the hobby he isn’t allowed to enjoy

What helped me get motivated to paint was trying to tie in the lore I created to my army. The second motivator was placing the minis I painted after trying new techniques next to each other. I feel like I suck at painting but when I see my progression lined up on the shelf, it keeps the drive to paint alive.
