Thinking about "do not try to buy miniatures from other players" I was playing another Tau Player - and fell in love with his Crisis suit squad - which was even painted in my colour sheme (The white tau one) - not fitting into his - the old one. He told me he wanted to try the "new" white sheme but did not like it. I offered to buy it - for the price of a new set + his time spent in hours *14€ (which was 2 hours) - he was pretty happy. I think the problem is not trying to buy models - but to not respect the effort of the other person.
@bobdole8830
@bobdole8830 4 ай бұрын
Because it doesnt work like that, unless you are selling painting as a professional service or are EXTREMLY good and time efficient, it simply becomes too expensive to pay those prices for a hobby paint job. 2h for a Crisis squad is pretty fast, many people easily spend 3-4 hours on one suit without it looking significantly better than the same suit someone will paint in 30 minutes, so you simply cant go by that alone and people with that expectation usually will end up salty or disapointed. Unless a paintscheme is significantly better than TTR or happens to be EXACTLY what you are looking for, the paint usually is a factor that depreciates value. ebay is full of modells with a shitty to mediocre paint job offered as "pro painted" or "well painted" sitting there at 3-4 times MSRP and not being bought EVER.

Independent game shops I've known usually prohibit people making deals to sell things in product lines they sell while on the premises. Given GW's reputation I'd expect them to have policies that would allow managers to expel anyone trying to buy their products from anyone who isn't them while on GW premises.

Never seen anyone put up signs like that, but I do wish gaming conventions would enforce such rules. Most people are good at taking care of themselves, but entering certain rooms and feeling the stench almost felt like a punch to the face, it was that bad. Tightly packed MTG rooms were especially unbearable, and sure, pack that many people together and things will get stinky, but they should not get "that" stinky...

I remember seeing this happen once when I was a teenager. A mum walked into the store and up to a staff member and said "where is my son" he replied "which one is your son?" She says "Jimmy (or whatever it was)" without missing a beat the staff member said "I don't know this isn't a crèche it's a shop". She actually looked shocked. We had this problem in our FLGS as well, including in GW on busy Saturdays back in the day. I think the main thing is these kids weren't even given any spending money by the parents or didn't bring any hobby stuff like trading cards or miniatures or anything, so they were just vaguely wandering around the store for an hour or so looking at the boxes of stuff they won't be allowed to buy or peered over other people's games, hobby tables and the painted models displayed in glass cabinets like a kid in a sweet shop. I felt bad for the staff, they shouldn't have a duty of care for these kids, its not part of the job description and yet here they are finding themselves in a situation where they are expected to watch over and entertain these bored 12 year old lads.

Same here at an FLGS here in AZ. This kid would come by, to young to really have enough money buy GW stuff, but we would all kind of take turns watching him. We'd even buy him some drinks and snacks, and I know we had him sit at the paint bar and, hopefully, got him hooked onto GW stuff. I think his family moved, because after a couple years, we never saw him again. 😢

That's one of my pet peeves: someone with a disability--whether it be physical or other--using it to get away with abhorrent behavior. I am totally blind--yes yes, I know, a totally blind table-top wargamer, I know, I'm a novelty--and my life is difficult enough as is. When another blind person does something awful and hides behind their disability, it makes the rest of our lives that much more difficult. The same holds true with any other form of disability. We can be accommodated to without setting expectations for what is considered good behavior lower than the rest of society. To put it differently North, your approach is is a good one and I wish that more people would adopt it.

That's a fair question. By touch, memory and decent situational awareness. Before a game starts, I carefully feel where all of the terrain has been placed, and during deployment phase, my opponent tells me where he is placing each of his units in relation to that terrain. I have to try and keep all of that information straight in my head, but I do manage. Also, trusting my opponent is another aspect. I can "read" my dice with my fingers--a little like reading Braille. I also use a tactile measuring tape. The only bit I am still working on--and keep in mind that I've been doing this for twenty years--is an efficient way to access my army lists during a game.
@tonygoold
@tonygoold 4 ай бұрын
@@justinjones7506 that's fascinating, thank you for sharing your process. I'm really glad to hear you have opponents who are willing to accommodate your disability by declaring their unit placements. I play a lot of different table tops game, and to be honest I am not a big wargamer, but I usually go into Games workshop and buy paints and stuff like that for whatever game I may be painting at the time. I used to go to the Thurrock lakeside to do painting classes, which were really good and taught me a lot. Shame Lakeside shop closed down as the Romford one is quite far away from me, in terms of just popping in, the Romford manager looks like hes on the ball as well and wont put up with any nonsense, he knows I am not in there to buy the games (I do own space hulk and my son and I bought a copy each Legion imperialis though) When I go in there he always go well out of his way to help me with paints, top man. Unfortunately there are Patrick's of this world, and for those that have to deal with them, have my sympathies. The worst person I had to face in a games workshop was one guy who for some reason proceeded to explain his WH40K ultramarine army bit by bit blow by blow, to me, it went on for so long I started to zone out and my eye balls started to shrink into the back of my head.

That's because we're on friendly terms with them, and we only discuss such things and alternatives when no one else is in the store. If someone asks after something that's not there in a hurry, we might suggest some other local stores that give 10% off, because we know the manager does the same and is fine with such things, because the way they see it all the money circles back to GW in the end in some way or another.

As a professional mental health worker, counsellor and life coach, I totally understand that dealing with individuals, on the spectrum can be challenging when you are not trained, mental health disorders are often hidden by individuals and masked so that they can fit in, communicating and understanding responses is also hard work for some. The idea of the chain wallet was basically so if your wallet fell out you didn’t totally lose it, Harley also did it as when riding its was a lot easier at that angle for you to have your wallet fall out. Some people use it for keys or wallets. It’s basically became a goth fashion statement at one point. I used to get people at one point asking me if I had a Harley as I had the chain and the tshirts, and were horrified I actually did. I have a few of my portfolio that attend GW as part of the Battle Honours programme and also play DnD as part of a community group social support initiative. My GW shop always has at least two people on site and if they have a specific group in they have a social worker or support worker attending. All participants have an agreement on behaviour that they sign with their parents or caregivers as well as support staff on appropriate social behaviour and boundaries they have to sign it.

Exactly this. I internalised early the idea that if something went wrong for me socially I was exclusively to blame because I knew I lacked social skills. It took me decades to unlearn that, even to the extent of being able to articulate that I didn't understand what I'd done wrong: I'd just passively accept that - whatever it was - not understanding what I'd done was itself a fault on my part that I couldn't admit for fear for coming across as either stupid or insensitive as it was evidently obvious to other people. I spent years living with intense feelings of guilt about things that years later I realised were either trivial and/or not something I could have avoided with the way I understood the world at the time. The ideas that other people might have misunderstood me, or been prejudiced, or that there may have been faults on both sides, were concepts I eventually had drilled into me by a couple of harsh experiences that I ultimately couldn't rationalise as being my fault. That said, I concur with everyone who's pointed out that this isn't at all what happened in this case - the guy was told repeatedly what he was doing wrong and seemingly made no effort to adjust his behaviour. With all the stuff I now understand about the way I behaved in my youth, there's plenty that's inexcusable on the basis of either autism or anything else.

Things are usually on a spectrum, but I wonder if there are two types: the more common type knows they lack interpersonal skills, so they try to be cautious to stay well clear if the boundaries. Maybe the other type knows it too but their "strategy" is to always push the boundaries until someone pushes back. Then they assume) they are told exactly where the boundary is so they maximize getting what they want. But they fail to account for how pissed off people get having to constantly stand up for their boundaries.

I am always so suprised, how different the whole gaming culture is in UK. Both in what is considered good and the worse. Also the idea being able to afford GW games is mind blowing too. Our problems are of the military and police dudes get drunk and start to fight, having a store where members from two different hooligan clans could come in to contact.this bideo was very Informative and interesting to watch.

I have so many nightmares to share but i am not a writer. I have tried and tried to type a letter but it just turns into a long rambling mess that goes on for 40 pages or more. 30 years in the hobby is a lot to document. Ive tried to break it up but there is so much cross referencing and call backs to different stories that it's near impossible. I dont want to change elements and facts just to make a more cohesive narrative. A lot of the humor comes from repeat offenders and running jokes. If i just trim down to the basics they turn into lame three sentence anecdotes.

Not very fair to make people play their army lore accurate when you play Ultramarines. One of the most objective focused chapters out there. So you are allowed to play the game the way it's meant to be played cause your faction identity supports that, but everyone else has to just play like it's just a kill game without points? Man I like my lore accuracy too, but the point of the game is to win(And have fun of course). Reminds me of some bad gamers who get genuinely angry when you beat them and insult you for using a good strategy or move(As long as it's not an entirely broken strat or glitched thing). I recently played a really funny and surprisingly effective Guard army that was entirely infantry with three scout walkers and was sort of designed to kill power armour factions. Rekted my ass cause I am also ultramarines. It was fun just to see an odd ball idea. And besides, if you are claiming you want lore accurate fights then you better know your lore. How do you forget that the tyranids have a hivemind that is intelligent. Yes they use horde tactics, but it's usually suplimented by intelligent ideas. Artillery behind the massive waves, larger boiforms finding weaknesses in the lines to exploit. Lictors sneaking around to asssinate commanders. Attacking and disrupting key structures when it can. Or filling the air with spores to clog up aircrafts engines. Everything has a purpose. Just sounds like someone being sore that they are being beaten and use lore as an excuse. Or he genuinely wants lore accuracy cause he wants to be in the fantasy. If that's true then you need to communicate and prepare for lore accurate games. My store has a discord you can plan ahead on the game night to find a match instead of walking in and hoping for a game. But there's no excuse for being so mad at players just playing the game with an interesting build or idea or what just works well. And especially no reason to call her a bitch when she makes a point that proves the tyranids can be smart. The more I listen the more I am leaning to the side that he was just a sore loser. Oh.... and he's probably a piece of sh*t. Ya, he's got to go.

The impression I had is that he was fixated on his specific interpretation of the lore, quite probably genuinely - I do the same myself, but as I'm more competitively-focused when actually playing the game myself (and my area of interest in the lore isn't particularly on how the factions fight their battles) it's not something I would try to 'enforce'. I can certainly conceive of people who would, particularly if that's a treasured special interest for someone with some form of autism. He does sound something of a misogynist, so he could well have got especially worked up about losing to a girl.

Have about 100k points (5th ed points values) in various chaos armies but work and life have kept my Traitor guard, demons chaos marines and titans in the display cabinet. I have not been in a GW affiliated store in at least 12 years. But I still love the hobby. Got to say though, listening to you describe the goings on in your store(deviates excluded) really makes me miss it. I will have to go and have a visit. Would love to visit your store, but I am on the other side of the world.

Also, wow, nice job Patrick. Only a moron would say "GW is overpriced, go to eBay!" in an actual GW store! Even if you're an evil bastard with no conscience and don't care if someone gets kicked onto the street because you've ruined their business, you should still have enough intelligence to know not to shit where you eat.

Not to grant them special treatment or to single them out. They all are diagnosed as high funtional. I treated them and judge them just like i would any one. They sometimes tries to use their diagnosis as a "get out of jail" free card, but they never do.

I used to attach my keys and wallet to my chain. I think most people did. No other reason to wear it other than trying to look "metal" I guess. I remember the staff from when I used to play (25 years ago now). I was one of the odd social ducks with lets say a quirky sense of humour. I had a few 10-15 minute time-outs for things i said. But even I would have expected to be perma-banned for calling anyone a bitch. That's just not how it worked. Yeah they all knew me. I was called "The Frog" in the store and they knew I was odd, but odd doesn't equate to getting off with that kind of behaviour.

That shop could be selling them 10% cheaper, but those people in your store are there because of the parts that 10% cheaper doesn't fill.

The carpet ban like 'YOU MUST NOT DO THIS' is very recent. Before then it was an unwritten rule that you should discourage large games in store. That gradually morphed into only small games in store and then eventually no games at all should be allowed in the major GW stores. It sucks, I rang my local GW last year hoping for a game only to be told they don't do games in store...in GAMES Workshop. But there we are :)

@@northernexile yea it kinda sucks cos GW was a safe place for me as a kid when i got like serious homophobic bullying in high school in the 00s, it let me make friends and gave me a place to go after school and on weekends (and consumed basically all of my pocket money back when you could actually buy things for £5) but at the same time, there was a lot of drama that sometimes ended up dragging in the staff, one manager if i remember right got sacked because of a spat in a wow guild he had with some other people from the store. it was fun but also looking back some very dodgy stuff went on that i can see why a company wouldn't want the headache, im just glad i was a fat ugly kid kept the nonces away 🤣

24:20 In that instance I quite disagree. That is worthy of a s-offender-report. Especially since you know how he's behaved around the young boys in the store. Do you have any idea what the longterm psychological damages are that such people cause? It doesn't even need to come to the big event, but a permanent exposure to such a pest and the helpnessness towards that pest because nobody who could does anything undermines the ability to feel any safety and trust at all. That's the kind of looking away that destroys victims in cults as well. The psychological harm is often worse than that of the physical act. It is hard to grasp we humans have trouble understanding harm that does not leave visible bruises or broken bones, but all cases analzed and the research into it shows the same: psychological abuse is worse than physical. The brain doesn't distinguish between the wo, and what causes the deep wounds is the lack of safety and helplessness, the uncaring nature of the environment when left to the worst. What hit the topic home for me, and also allowed me to accept and process the crap in my own backstory as for what it is and thereby allow for thehealing process to even have a chance to start, was the long and arduozos court trial against a well known child-abuse cult in Australia where for once they had the children speak out. The channel Theramin Trees had a good 2part summary on that years ago. "Oh, he's just touching the kids weirdly and inappropriately and they all hate it, that's none of my business" is the attitude that enables all of these pests. What's GW supposed to do about that? "Oh, he's out of this place, it's somebody else#s problem now - some other kids' problem." Wiothout enablers, abusers would have no chance to even try. The one topic that throughout history and cultures the overwhelming majority agrees about is evil. (Evil regimes that practice this stuff are only the exception that prove the rule, for those were usually not held in high regard) I will also add that Markus Aurelius's constant repetition about retreating into his own head is equivalent to how trauma-victims of narcissistic and s-abuse dissociate, he was still on the good side of that part of it, for he did not engage completely in magical escapism, but half his books are suffused with lines of nihilism and apathy, with a denial of malice and flickers of its acknowledgment. . Especially the earlier the book, the more negative lines they contain. A repulsion for the flesh, a disdain for existence, a projection, desperate need for meaning in the universe, for what was done to him - he even phrases it directly as such. His meditations (in German: "Self-reflections) are not wholly a therapeutic manual or healthy philsophy. They are that in part, while the other half is self-destructive in its constant yearning for the end in this mortal coil and dimishing of value and importance of the fleeting life in an infinite universe and time. All of that is coping., We cannot fault for Markus not having a good therapist with the knowledge and capabilities of today (at least if you're lucky enough to find a good one)- and Rome was certainly not known for being kind to children in all the relevant ways.. A product of its time. For someone battling alone he did a decent job, but also consider that his rule was the last good one, and the next heir was a failure - a lack of planning for the future, because it was dismissed so much as - he was almost obsessed with retreaing into the moment, the here and now. Planning is impeded by the constant stress, the hypervigilance, the mental assault of persistant trauma, the haunting memories and flashbacks of emotional recordings. Markus is a man who figured out how to survive, but sadly not how to heal. Denial and dismissal lkeep you locked in that state. Self-blame, deserving everything happening to him, any bad deed, any malicious one, is excused and justified in his texts. How he can speak of virtue and justice seems almost like double-think, but those are the sane lines inbetween the coping mechanisms. Those negative aspects are even the very things abusers today are known for instilling in their targets so that they will not complain, report, and just take it. In PTSD, the prefrontal cortex is impeded, any high-stress-situation does that, because those higher brainfunctions are distracting the brain what it deems important in the very most now: Survival. It's late and I could have probably written this better, and that was the plan in the long run, but after hearing this story, this needs out - especially since you advertise Markus's writings (and they are not entirely bad and are recommended for a good reason first and foremost), but here they show their negative impact, their very fatal flaws.
