Just wanted you share, I was like 12 when I started warhammer. My uncle had me use a exacto knife to clean the flashing off a chaos back pack and I had fun. I said I wanted to play and I was given orks. I start collecting them because I think they are fun. I do more research and find a lot of colors have meanings. This is great how ever I am color blind. I am restricted to 25 colors. So it always felt like a chore to paint but I could get over it because I like ork lootas but around the speed buggie Era I realize I'm never gonna get my ork shooting to work i don't like painting I think I just need to move on. So I did. I moved on to adeptus mechanicus. I liked skiitari, so I got them and put them together with a start collecting box with the crab tank. But I didn't have fun painting them either, but when they revealed the robo horse calvary I realized the model line wasn't going down the castellan road so I moved on to space marines. I was using logic of I want the model releases of a space Marine player. I buy the black Templar box I enjoy painting I enjoy basing I get the box done but I was staying in a trailer. And when I moved my grandmother sold it before I was able to get any of my models. It really took the wind out of my sails because not only did I loose my fully painted box of Templar but I lost my grimaldis as well as a chaplain on bike. So instead of trying to rebuild I moved on too sisters of battle. And I've kept them till this day I have 1000 points painted. And I just started collecting Emperos children and plans on buying farsight and making a full mech tau army.

I used to test the guys at the local GW store, like bringing old Heroquest miniatures to paint at the store. Never worked they always knew It wasn't miniatures from other companies.

Disagree with first hobby nightmare. In some cases people need to learn to speak up and tell people sooner rather than later. Granted you should be aware of yourself but if you're not as versed or experienced (as was the case with this guy) sometimes that talk needs to happen from the vets or the elders of any circle. I do this with 5's and 7's. If someone is going full out they will be told early doors to chill out. So the onus is not completely on the person - some guys need to grow a pair.
