I'm playing on Chess.com -- these aren't sponsored videos but the site seems pretty cool.
Chess has been having a resurgence in popularity this year so I have finally acquiesced to semi-popular demand and started to play a bit. First, let's hone our skills and get a little more warmed up and then let's conquer chess dot com one board gamer at a time.
If you enjoyed the video, please consider hitting the Like button. It helps me out a lot!

Pretty sure NL's poking fun at the fact his own chat started saying all trades are bad in response to Levi's advice, he mentioned that in like the previous video or so, that it was double edged in that the comments became like that. Might be wrong and he genuinely believes the extreme was the advice, though. Agreed, some good matches.

All jokes aside, when it comes to game time IMO the 10 minute videos are by far the most enjoyable ones, if anything you should consider giving a try to the even longer options, being able to relax and turn more talkative really changes the experience for us viewers. This! The longer games, with more consideration, more outward dialogue about your choices and why you're choosing and thinking what you're choosing and thinking. That's the pog right there. Watching you do better over time is pog as fuck. The speed chess is testing your ability to be good *faster*, which is a much less interesting set of considerations.

Him "doing" bad is just how to you learn chess. One day you have opponents that just don't really know what to do in certain situations and get totally stomped by you and then there is you being totally stomped. You lose, you learn and that's what makes Chess so good in my opinion and after seeing your mistake 20-30 times you'll become accustomed to do better in the future.

Northernlion, generally you don't want to play e6 in the caro kann until you get your light squared bishop out. The main idea of the caro is that it's slower than the french (e6 then d5, where you can then play c5 without first playing c6) but you're able to get your bishop out. If you like the line with c5, as you said, you should play the french. You'll get the same position but be an entire move ahead.

Hey NL, I really enjoy these 10 minute games. A suggestion for during the post-game analysis: you seem to ask great questions after the game ("what if the opponent had done this" or "I thought he had that"). But I notice you then look at the first move of the engine line, say "ok, computer thinks this is best", are satisfied and move on. It might be interesting to sometimes explore some lines deeper, try to understand the reason of the engine line and why your idea wouldn't work. That's incredibily hard, and not always aas obvious, especially in the opening stage when the advantage can just be positional. But it definitely helps, especially with missed tactics and recognizing potential tactics. A habit I took over from a chess youtuber IM John Bartholomew is before looking at the computer analysis, first trying to analyse the game yourself without any engine.Making up your own mind of how the opening went, where you (and also your opponent) made a mistake, what you (or your opponent) could have done differently, recall the tactics you think you used... Only after that, look with the engine and see where you were wrong and what you missed. I don't know how well this translates into youtube content, but it will help improve your chess.

NL an alternative response to white moving there pawn to e5 is to just get the light square bishop developed to f5 white should respond by developing one of their knights (if they don't you should be able to punish one way or another) then close the pawn structure with e6. Honestly whether you go with the engine line or an alternative it is just be a matter of preference depending on if you want a closed or open game. One advantage to the line I gave is that if white decides to try to trap your light square bishop it results the kingside pawns being overextended making a kingside castle risky for them while making them under developed on the queen side.

@8:29, the reason you take his knight on d4 is because that's a good knight and your bishop on e3 is not so good. That's the reason the trade is good. Now, not every "good trade" is a move you want to make. You still have to see the follow on Nb5 then the forced Re8 (because you unblocked your rook) followed by the crushing Nc7 winning the exchange. However, my point isn't that there is an engine line following the trade. It's just that you should have considered the trade more because you exchange a bad piece for a good one. Overall, fantastic game though. You took your advantage and smothered him with it.

I play the Caro Kann as my main opening for black and like to go 3. e5 Bf5 in response to the advance variation. It ends up in a very similar position and similar ideas to what you got in this game, but after an h6, you can tuck your light squared bishop away on h7 so it has a bit more of a say in the game. But then again if stockfish prefers an instant c5 then who am I to argue!

Hey NL, doubt you'll see this but in case you do: playing bishop to f5 on move 2 is another way to play the advance Caro-Kann that might be slightly easier to play. The whole point of the Caro-Kann compared to the French Defence is to play your light square bishop out early and THEN play e6, so if you play e6, you're just playing the French Defence but down a tempo (you played c6-c5 instead of c5 right away).

When you asked the name of that line, and the computer didn't give one - there is a reason: basically, you are playing the advanced French with an extra tempo for white, the one you lost by playing c7-c6-c5. The normal response to 3.e5 is either that rather spicy 3..c5 line, or (what most people play) 3..Bf5. Closing the centre later with c5-c4 is generally problematic in the French, because it makes your counterplay on the queen's side too slow, against accurate play, and white can pawn-storm you on the king's side.
