MQ-8C Fire Scout, the U.S. Navy’s next generation ship-based autonomous helicopter system deployed operationally Dec. 14, 2021. Deployed with Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron 22, Detachment 5 (HSC-22 DET 5) aboard USS Milwaukee (LCS-5), Fire Scout provides greater organic intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance and targeting (ISR&T) capabilities for the U.S. Navy.

What are the pros and cons of re-using an existing airframe to develop a drone? I'd think designers would at least give it distinct fuselage panels. Just looks funny.

Guessing they are going through various funding stages and need to hit benchmarks before getting more money to advance in testing and design.

It’s unmanned so you don’t need windshield at all. Operated via camera under the cockpit

Yes - seriously, it can be flown both ways, though launching and recovering aboard ship is strictly Operator commanded with selected automated steps.

I wouldn't want to be standing under an experimental drone helicopter as it hovers for the first time

I'm sure it has hovered before they decided to put it on a boat and fly it over open water... a lot of testing has been done before they send it out to try in its actual work environment.

This is not your average DJI drone with a wifi connection which decides to take a bath as soona as you fly it over a pond. :)

1st flight of the 8C was in 2013, with 1st ops from a LCS class ship first performed in 2017. lots of hours ashore and shipboard before this 1st OPERATIONAL deployment.
