I know for a fact that a lot of dentists do recommend deep cleaning not because of the patient's need but because they have a big pocket. Its a shame. I am a dentist myself and you have no idea how many of my patients tell me that they have been told they need deep cleaning which in fact they did not. Yes the patients must be informed and always get a second opinion. Thanks for the video.

I was told I need a deep cleaning. And then after I'll need cleanings every quarter. Does this sound legit to you?
@ramindavani
@ramindavani 7 күн бұрын
@@ColeighColeWee Ok, not every patient needs deep cleaning, however if you have not had a regular cleaning for a long time and you are not good with oral hygiene you may qualify for deep cleaning. Moreover, some dental offices are being greedy and tell the patients they need deep cleaning for the sake of more money. So, if you have periodontal disease which is the defined as deep pockets with inflamed gums and lots of dental plaque (calculus) you are a candidate for deep cleaning. yes, if you do a deep cleaning then you need to visit the office every 4 months for cleaning to maintain (periodontal maintance) the oral health of your gums and teeth. Good luck.

I have no swelling, bleeding, pain or inflamed gums and I brush and floss all the time. The last two dentists thought I had dental insurance and said I had gum disease and needed surgery. They didn't know my medical policy only covers two teeth cleanings per year. NOTHING else. They are both crooks. I didn't know until I watched this video that scaling and planing can cause damage. WOW. Thank you.

Most dentist are crooks. And it doesn't matter how prestigious the facility. I went to a very prestigious dental institution and my wallet was cleaner than my teeth. The insurance company was kicking back a lot of procedures due to it being unnecessary. "Plan Frequency Limitation" it is called. I had to pay that and trusted the dentist and turned out my dentist and his students were practicing unnecessary procedures for educational purposes at my expense.

Highly recommend a second opinion- I was told I had periodontitis and needed a deep cleaning. Got a second opinion and was told my gums look good and I only needed a standard cleaning- mind you it was only 8 months after my last cleaning which made me question the first dentist telling me I needed a deep cleaning and also my wisdom teeth(which doesn’t bother me) pulled. I don’t recommend chain dentist.

I went to one of those dental chain places for 3 years before I realized they were only ripping me off . Every 6 months I would go in for the cleaning and was told I needed the deep cleaning again. I’m not a dentist so I didn’t know. But they knew. They kept showing me x-rays to verify me needing a deep cleaning…but I didn’t know what the hell I was looking at. It’s amazing to me that they expect a lay person to understand and interpret a dental x-ray. Recently found out from a private practice dentist that the infection I had was lower than the level that they were cleaning, so all it did was make my teeth feel clean but the infection was still there. Never once was I offered any antibiotics or even an extraction or a root canal. Just every 6 months I was called in to help a dentist pay for his new Mercedes.

I have similar situation. One month ago I did exams at a dental clinic, the doc said I need deep cleaning and then referred me to a specialist. I had consolation appointment with the specialist, she examed my mouth and measured the "pockets", it turned out the pockets have become much deeper than the first exam one month ago, changed from 5 to 8 which surprised me! I was taking good care of my teeth cleaning during the month, how come they became such worse? I asked which teeth are pockets 8, she let me look at the computer screen my self! she also answered other questions impatiently. And She's not gently when did the exam, I was in pain and my teeth were bleeding. Not good experience. I'm hesitate if go ahead do the deep cleaning.

Despite of what some dentists say, scaling and root planning is one of more painful procedures and I had 2 done so far, spaced out about 15 years apart. I think the initial one caused receding gumlines for one tooth, so there is definitely risk that the gum doesn't reattach optimally. For younger generations, there is ZERO excuse not to do an excellent job with daily home dental care. When I was a kid, they didn't even invent Sonicare yet. Nowadays, you can get a Sonicare and good water flosser for less than $100 combined.

I have 4,5,6 pockets 4 months ago. I go a scaling and planing done the first week of March on all 4 quadrants. I'm at 1s/2s now except one pocket near a crown that is a 3 due to a bit of gum damage. For those of you needing this done, I would recommend going to a periodontist rather than having it done at a regular clinic. It's more expensive. (1300 for me vs. 1080 at my reg dentist for all 4 quadrants), but they are specialists that do this on a daily basis and have far more experience and yield far better results than a general dentist. I did a good bit of research trying to figure out if I needed this, and came across a lot of people saying if you have 5s/6s general dentists will do it, but that it was still preferred to just make the jump to a Perio specialist. It's a bit brutal the first day few days after. Your gums will be tender as hell, and you'll be very sensitive to cold, heat, etc, but after having both sides done thurs and fri, and brushing/rinsing gently with my waterpick before swishing chlorohexidine for a couple days, I was good as new by the following monday. The biggest contributor to my recovery imo besides the deep cleaning is using a waterpick EVERY SINGLE night on 4-6 (I started low because my gums were bleeding) and also swapping to a better Electric tooth brush rather than flossing and a manual toothbrush. The waterpick is amazing, and cleans far better than flossing alone (though I still floss as needed to get stubborn stuck bits. I cannot recommend it more highly. I got a 40 dollar Oral B pro 1000 and a Waterpick Aquarius for 49 dollars on Amazon. 100% worth making the investment and taking the time to do this nightly. The Waterpick only needs to be done just before bed so that your plaque doesn't have time to harden and stick to your teeth, so it's literally 90 seconds a night to prevent ever needing to have this procedure done.

Totally agree. I recently bought a water flosser to augment my Sonicare and daily flossing. I regret not getting one sooner, it's amazing how much little bit of food debris it can flush out. I end up buying one for my parents and another for my suitcase. The only thing is water flosser takes up a lot of room in one's suitcase and the portable ones aren't as powerful. Also, Waterpik has a cheap battery power flosser that vibrates up and down, and it's amazing at dislodging stuck food debris.

I need to get an SRP! I went to a private office, and the hygienist who recommended it was great! She and the dentist went above and beyond and showed me my X-rays, and took the time to educate me and explain the reasonings why! If your provider isn’t explaining the reasonings and showing you your X-rays as proof as to why you need something done, that’s a red flag whether you’re at a private of corporate office!

One of the upsides to having Medicaid dental insurance, if you go to a county dental office (as opposed to the corporate offices that take Medicaid), is that the dentists are never going to recommend procedures you really don't need, because there's no profit in it for them, and the dentists are just on salary and not pressured to up sell. Unfortunately, going to a private practice, even if it isn't a corporate office, it usually feels like walking onto a used car sales lot.

My English is ESL so be patient. Thanks My father who is 92 years old and I believe he went dentist may be less than 10 times during his life? However, I know for sure he never had regular cleaning his teeth and never done deep cleanings. I do remember when he was around he was around 58years old one of dentist told him, he need deep cleanings and it need clowns for few teeth. Guess what, he didn't take that dentist advice and he treated his own instinct. He brushed almost twice or three times a day and flushed and gaggled with hydrozoan proxied. How do I know it? Because he force me to do as he dose. Anyway. How he is 92 years his teeth has coffee stained and few teethes have fillings. I m start to wondering you guys (dentists) recommending people regular teeth cleaning and deep cleaning stuff really do keep teeth healthy? What about my father? He is 92 years old, his teeth is in good condition. When his dentist told him he need to deep cleaning that was 34 years ago. According to his dentist my father should lost all the teeth by the time now. But I still see his teeth in his mouth. Is it some kind of miracle? Guess what? I am 55 years old now and I follow my father's way. I brush 3 to 4 minuets two three times every day and gaggle with hydrazone peroxide for whitening teeth. My teeth feel health and strong. Last year I went a dentist for regular cleaning, my dentist told me I need to deep cleaning. So, I came home and looking at my teeth through mirror carefully, I don't really see the serious level of for doing deep cleanings. I asked him, how much will coast and he told me $1,400 . Guess what. At this point, I can not trust any one of dentist in the world and even you guys. I will repost when I become 92 years from now and show you how many teeth I lost. Just wait here! 😁

I don’t think that gun disease is something subjective. Bleeding upon probing, deep pocking and bone loss are the indications of periodontal disease. Bone loss and tartar buildup can be seen on x-rays, deep picking can be measured by prob and bleeding can be seen visually. There can be disagreement on the severity of periodontal disease, but it can definitely be diagnosed by dental professionals.

Went to a "chain" dental office for prophy, during the pandemic, and the hygienist - let me tell you - all he did was a few swipes here and there, ignoring the hard to reach spots, and then he just brushed my teeth with an electric toothbrush. To be fair, my teeth are well taken care of but there are still areas of visible plaque accumulation in tight crevices between the teeth. How do you know which locations have good hygienists and dentists that do detailed prophylaxis? I've always had a hard time finding a good practice for my cleanings. It's so frustrating. And it's even more frustrating because I cannot come to admit in their face that they did a lousy job with their cleaning and would like them to keep cleaning the spots they missed because I fear that they may end up damaging my teeth if they are vindictive at all, which, while probably rare, I really don't want to take any chances on. Are there some sort of secret club that dentists and hygienists know of to connect each other to highly rated prophy experts?

I went to two dentists in the last 4 months both had good reviews on google and one of them had 5 star reviewS, (I’m sure now that those reviews are fake)the first one did a very poor job in cleaning my teeth and left tartar in the back teeth, the dentist spent a minute with me and didn’t say anything that is useful .. same BS. So I looked for another dentist to get those teeth cleaned again and again she did a poor job and didn’t clean the area I told her about, the last dentist was a chain dental office. I got frustrated. My gum is receding in back, I don’t have any bleeding and I don’t have red gum like I see online, it’s just a dark yellow line going black around the tooth and I now have pain in one of those teeth. I use an electric tooth brush, I brush my teeth multiple times a day depending on where I am, if I’m in the house all day I try to brush after each meal and if I’m outside I brush twice or thrice a day, I use a hydrogen peroxide mouth wash, I floss at night.. I don’t eat sweets or candy cuz I don’t like sugary food.... but when the dentist does a poor job on that 6 month routine cleaning and that tartar keeps building up it starts to cause problems and the dentist-who didn’t do his job initially- will start “milking” you for more money. Now I have to look for another dentist and I’m thinking about going to my old dentist in a different State that I used to live in which is an hour flight.. he was top notch, honest and caring, I want to see him and take care of everything there and be done. Dentists are like other professionals they want to make money, the run a business and unfortunately very few actually care about their patients.. some are good but the majority are thieves. My old dentist that I used to go to when I lived in a different State had his own private practice, he takes the time to listen, he doesn’t rush, he works with his patients and only recommends what you really need, I have never heard of a single person who complained about him and almost all of his patients were referrals because of his great reputation, everyone at my old job and their families used his services. That’s the kind of dentists we want, not those thieves who work with their staff to rip you off by doing poor work to get you to come back and recommend what you don’t need.

Hi, I'm a hygienist (from the UK tho), you definitely should voice your concerns to whoever is doing your cleaning, they wont be able to be vindictive and damage your teeth. I often hear from patients I see for the first time that it was the most thorough clean they've had. If you feel odd about saying smth to the hygienists face, maybe make a comment like 'that was quick', or 'you're finished already' so they dont think it's okay to do a lousy job in the hard to reach areas. Also make a comment before they start of how you've noticed build up in certain areas. :)

Don't know what to do: I've been told repeatedly that my teeth and gums and "very healthy". I have been told I've got "some recession" but not to worry just yet. Went in for a cleaning today and they sprung the "Scaling and Root Planing" on me just for my back molars. They said there's been some bone loss since last year and the gums are pulling away from the tooth creating deeper pockets. And with probing (sticking the metal tip on my gum) there was bleeding. The numbers - just back by my molars are like 4 or 5 or something like that. So they did NOT clean any of my teeth but instead told me they'd submit to my insurance to get me set up for this deep cleaning. Feels fishy. I mean, I know there's some deeper pocketing back there by the molars but I just never heard of this before until I just walked in for a routine cleaning after being told several appointments ago that I really take good care of my teeth. ?? Any thoughts?

Same here. We moved so just had our first visit with our new dentist and suddenly I've went from good healthy teeth to "early periodontic gum disease." I've never been diagnosed with gingivitis, which supposedly happens before this. 🤔 They want to do root planing and scaling on my teeth and then see me every 3-4 months instead of 6-8 months in order to "checkup" on it. If little to no improvement they will keep doing the process or recommend surgery (cut the gum into flaps - expose the full root for cleaning) to go deeper to "fix" it. Maybe this issue is legit and came up out of the blue, but I'm not feeling any pain and not seeing swelling either.. I faithfully clean my teeth and haven't changed the way I clean my teeth. Seems sketchy. 🧐🤔🤔🤔 I'm definitely going to get a second opinion before I agree to root planing and scaling!

can we get some kind of regulation vs these dentists that do permanent damage to healthy teeth? Something has to happen because a very high amount of dentists do this. When I chipped the filling one of my teeth, I went to a dentist nearby to fix it. This dentist told me that the tooth had severe decay and needed to be pulled and replaced with a bridge. I went to get a 2nd opinion and the 2nd dentist said they can fix it with a filling, which they did. However, they recommended a list of other things including deep cleaning, crowns and fillings on every other upper tooth. The other thing is, the filling that chipped was from a visit I had 3 years ago when that dentist told me I needed a few fillings. I found out after that he thinned out some other teeth which would appear a bit darker on the X-Ray. Why he did this? Likely to try and scam me by saying that the teeth showed dark areas on an xray and that they needed crowns or extractions. A lot of dentists will try to pull some scam thing and drill teeth they aren't supposed to. You have to be more upfront with these frauds. We need stricter government regulations on them.

@4:57 Why does research show gum recession happens only in normal gum/teeth without gum disease? If it happens to normal teeth then it should happen in gum/teeth with gum disease. It does not make sense. For me I feel that once I started on doing deep cleaning over the last few years, there seems no turning back with gum recession. I feel that my gums just get lesser and lesser. It is frustrating because on one hand, I have to have the plaque and tartar removed regularly, but also it seems to cause further recession. I am so frustrated. Caught between a rock and a hard place.

With no inspection, my wife was told by Gold Coast Dental in Brea, CA that recent pregnancy/child birth is a good reason to get deep cleaning. Is this true? We went ahead with it, paying upfront of $1,000, because our insurance office has closed for the day, and never got any promised reimbursements because they said the insurance company actually insisted we pay additional $330 for their rate. So cash patients only pay $1,000 and patients with my insurance has to pay $1,330 out of pocket after the insurance paid the dental office $527? How is this right? Sounds like a big scam. I already reported this to the BBB and the dental board. Nothing much I can do.

I had one deep cleaning done....NEVER again. Within 2 weeks I started getting an abscess above one tooth that had a root canal done many years earlier. My dentist told me it was a incomplete root canal and I would need to go to a periodontal specialist to have the root canal redone....I never went, that was 4 years ago. I treated the abscess myself and its never come back. I also am not returning to any dentist for cleanings, I use baking soda and peroxide to gently brush my gums and teeth, you'll never get plaque again and my gums are pink and healthy, with no bleeding. The only way I will ever return to a dentist is if I'm in excruciating pain and I will only allow an extraction.

I was pondering the methods of deep cleaning with laser tech to the standard technical methodology of mental tools that are used to remove tartar from the teeth when a server case of periodontal is present would it be a better choice if a person is told that an extraction is needed because the theeth are too loose and might fall out during a scaling and planning ?shouldn’t people with this type of problem be considered Lazer treatment considering that there still is some bone foundation and more than 3/4 of teeth that are strong enough to be maintained ? Or is it so bad off that periodontal deases is the end of being able to maintain oral and healthy blood does keeping up with a healthy heart have no chance of periodontal present in the mouth?

@1:51 Once you see pockets around 4 or 5 or 6mm, that may not be indicative of an active gum disease right? It may be the result of past gum disease where the gum recession and bone loss cannot be reversed, isn't it? Does blood during probing then confirms that there is an active gum disease? What if there is no bleeding? I hope to get some education/clarification about this question. Thanks.

Stick my gums with a probe and it bleeds 🤔 Dentists are so corrupt. I stopped going to dentist 25 years. Sick and tired of their lies. Always telling me I have cavities and that I need teeth pulled, that I have gum disease, etc. nearly 50 and I have never had a tooth pulled, not a one cavity, and any problem I've ever had usually go away in two weeks or less. I brush teeth maybe three times a week. If insurance didn't exist (and dentists were honest) we'd probably only need about 10-15% of what we have today. Same with doctors but probably closer to 25%.

I have moderate periodontitis with mostly 3 and 4 probing and some 5. My periodontis gives me appointments every 5 months and I think it is abusive because I take much care, I brush two to three times a day and floss after every meal. I am worried that deep cleaning twice a year could do more harm than good. How often do you recommend to someone with moderate periodontal disease? Also after the pandemic because I didnt visit for two years she did a very deep-deep cleaning requiring anasthesia ( not the normal cleaning maintenance but she said that two years was too long) and she did the four quadrants at once, which I think is unappropriate, all quadrant at once with many syringe anasthesia shots in the gums, it was painful. It is normally made in two appointments isn it? . I still I think I didn't need it but maybe she needed the 500 Euros she charged me. Normally maintenance cleaning for periodontal disease is 80Euros.

Why don’t you just get to the point and say that you want all your patients to get “deep cleaning” (read: more money). Deep cleaning damages your nerves and gums, so it’s a big NO. It’s so unfortunate that dental plans are privatized and people are getting ripped off. Dental plan should be controlled by government, so that way a dentist wouldn’t care about profit and they would be more honest and ethical. Also, don’t trust anyone when their first sentence in their video starts to “give them thumbs up”.
