I remember riding one of these as my school district had one as a spare for the 1995 Thomas International 3800 and 1998 Thomas International 3800 both with the 7.3 litre T444E Powerstroke engine. They also used one with a Thomas body as spare for the ‘98. I miss the old Ford school buses.

You can definitely tell the step treads were repaired. They appear to be slip resistant as the rest of the floor isnt. I can see a system getting black step treads with a different floor color as Baltimore County got their Thomas Freightliner FS65s with the black step treads and green floor. And the Blue Bird Handicaps as well as 99 Amtrans and all IC CEs from 02 and up with the green step treads and green floor. Baltimore County stopped the black floor after 98 due to children being left on buses.

So how long did they make the short steps optional on school buses? I know my school system where I grew up switched to them in 93 from the high steps. And since then they always got the short steps.
