Using the Skeena kit from Diypackraft.com to make my first packraft. As a diyer myself, I looked into doing my own build, but soon found the cost of design, sourcing of materials and all the rest was way more than I want to take on. Matt at diypackraft has done an amazing job bringing many designs and making fantastic kits.
So this if more of a primer, rather than a how to.

Great video. I'm putting my DIY packraft together right now. I'm taking the class through the Folks School in Fairbanks (Alaska).

That is awesome. I think what I have found out later is I needed to heat longer. I have had a few leaks and it look mainly that it wasn't quite bonded enough. I got the ultralight and think the iron that I used will be fine, but I did get a hotter iron if I do a fabric thickness like this raft again. Good luck.

I've only done one tube, but I've noticed there is a fine line between too much heat (and for too long) and not enough. Fortunately, the process and the materials appear to be somewhat forgiving.

I wonder what kind of packraft would make a good tent/bed? Could save a lot of space if using it for sleeping somehow.

Great video! How long did it take you to make? And what temperature did you use on your item? Ordered my Skeena kit from Matt this week, so just waiting for it to arrive. Great idea pinning it down.

Hi Barbara, I had my iron at maximum the whole time. For the thicker material this barely did the job. I will be getting a different iron in the future if I do a raft with the thick material again. USPLastic has a sealing iron I think will work. I think you can get away with the iron I have, but really take you time to get the seal. It took me a month really as I wasn't in a rush but did go at a nice pace. It is real easy to think you have it going good though and not pay attention as much to get that seal. Plus some of the "moves" are short lived but need the night or a couple hours to cool before you move on. Good luck! Make a ton of molds to use. One helper that I love is a Lacrosse ball .

I'm super interested in doing one of these. Is it pretty stinky once you start heating up the fabric?

Thanks for the Video. But Matt sealed the tubes touching in the inside. 14:25 You have a lot bottom layer visible in the inside of the tube. What is the difference?

Depends on what raft and what version. The videos that are available to everyone on KZfaq are a much earlier version. This latest version is way different in construction.

Great video! I've got two of Matt's kits, but have yet to start work on them. How long would you say your total build time was?

Hi Ben, I took about 2 weeks as an est. For a couple days I inventoried and cut out the parts, watched the instructionals a bunch, made some forms and got used to the iron. Then it was a r and l tube section per night. If I needed to seam seal that pretty well ended the day as it needed to dry. It then took a few days of leak finding. Little buggers would show up everyday. Had about 20 of them. Probably due to ironing lack really, but I thought I was taking my time. If you are doing the heavier models take a bit longer on the iron than you think. Or get a better iron, I will be doing that soon. Good luck, reach out, happy sailing.

@@naturecallsoutdoors I have the same iron as you and went for the Sheena model in blue too! I got a red version for my girl friend. Having watched your video I will spend a bit more time on flattening the bottom of the iron. This weekend will be the start of raft one, I may pick your brains as I go if that is OK?

The one I a using came from Alibaba, do a search for Thermostat Mini Leather Iron. It seemed to do the job, but I did have to stay on it quite a while, and when I got a little lazy in places the leaks showed up. The iron I will get, as I am making a few more, will be this one, www.usplastic.com/catalog/item.aspx?itemid=119450. Quite a bit more expensive, but I feel it is worth it.

You may have used your iron on 110V? It could explain why you turned the temperature setting all the way up and still were complaining that it wasn't hot enough. This iron is designed to work at 220V, so use a transformer to convert 110V to 220V and it will work perfectly fine. No need to get that expensive iron from usplastic.

Painful to see you put holes in there too pin that down. I realize that the TPU will fill it in theory, but just doesn't seem like the best method to me.
