Social resistance by the civilian population to the Nazi occupation of Norway offered great risk in a country where the occupation leader’s name- Quisling- became a synonym for Nazi collaboration. Still, resistance came from Norway’s teachers, who refused to abide by rules set by the Nazi government.

One of my most cherished memories of childhood is the hours I spent with my great uncle. As a teenagers, he had lived in my grandfather's home, along with my mother and her siblings. After earning a teaching degree in the US, he had returned to Norway, and had been teaching for several years when the Nazis invaded. He was not only part of the resistance of the teachers, but become active in organizing the local underground in his area, becoming the regional commander. I had been under orders not to ask him about his war experiences, my parents fearing that I would stir painful memories. However, he volunteered several stories. The most dramatic one was of a time when he and his men set off explosives at each end of a highway tunnel, timed it so that a German convoy was trapped inside. About half of his men escaped arrest by the Nazis during the occupation, considered a very good record. We have a photo of him marching at the head of a column of surviving underground fighters in the victory parade held in their city when the king visited after the war. My uncle's proudest memory was of the moment the king presented him with a medal commemorating his contribution to the resistance movement.

My dad was one of the last guys out of Oslo, he was laying demolition charges on docks infrastructure as the Germans entered the city. Jumped on a tender, and was firing over the fantail with a STEN gun, which proceeded to double feed and blew up in his hands. I can see the tracery of scars on the back of his left hand, still. Got The Military Medal in that action.

My fourth grade teacher was among those arrested, and he ended up in the Oranienburg consentration camp in Germany. He was rescued by "The White Buses", a rescue effort led by Swedish red cross all over the disintegrating Nazi Germany in the spring of 1945. He told us about his ordeals, in that lead to a lifelong interest in war history for me. The white buses operation is in itself history that deserves to be remembered.

During the occupation of Norway, Sweden harbored many Norwegian that had fled. If you look into communist ideology, they always attack the minds of young people through the schools and universities. On 20. april 1943, Hitler's birthday, a paper printed under the title Words For Today, these words: "Den som lyg og veit at han lyg, og veit at andre veit at han lyg, og likevel lyg, han har den onde sjøl til førar." (Johanna Hiorth) "He who lies and knows that he lies, and knows that other know that he lies, and even then still lies, has the Evil one himself as his leader" (Johanna Hiorth) This did not sit well with the Germans or their puppets in Government.

Teachers are very brave entering a classroom to educate young minds How important they are and this story is a prime example of the courage of teachers identifying evil and not bowing to force. many comments here see parallels in current politics to the history lesson of this tale a very good presentation worth everyone to listen and think of the message being conveyed .

Carl Gustav Fleischer KCB (28 December 1883 - 19 December 1942[2]) was a Norwegian general and the first land commander to win a major victory against the Germans in the Second World War. Even through favor by the Norwegian crown he was dislike by the Norwegian political leadership and was exiled to Washington instead of being named Commander of Exiled Norwegian forces.

I read a biography about Vidkun Quisling a number of years ago. He was a former officer in the Norwegian army. And he took a leave to help starving Ukrainians during the Holodomor, back in the nineteentwenties. He was promised this would not affect his career in the Norwegian army, but it did. And that even when he was the officer student with the highest score anytime, from the Norwegian officers academy. Like their West Point. I mean, all time high! He had a very high IQ, I think in the top 1 percent or so. So I guess he was upset about not getting back on track after a humanitarian mission. And boy, did he know how to hold a grudge... Also, there was a comic oneliner here in Sweden during the war, just the one picture showing Vidkun Quisling outside the German government building in Berlin, trying to get past the guards to meet with Adolf. Saying "I'm Quisling!" And the German guard asking back "Okay, I can see you are one, but what is your name?"

If you sit among two or more warring powers, being a neutral party allows you to present a place of calm and civility. A place where the law and not chaos rules, and most importantly, a place where the combatants, when tired of fighting, can go to discuss peace and reconciliation. Eventually, the survivors of war will have to do what the survivors of every war before them have had to do--sit down and talk.
