Me playing Norwegian Wood at a fundraiser concert. My bass was tuned low to high: Ab Db Gb B. I get a lot of questions asking for tabs for this tune. I don't use or associate with tab at all, I use standard notation. When I learnt this tune I used neither. So please don't ask me for tabs because I don't have any. I like how you learnt the song just by ear. I play saxophone and when I want to learn something I also just listen, try to repeat, sometimes write it down.. listen again.. and repeat the whole process until I am satisfied. And, in my opinion, you did this song really, really, really good! Cheers from holland!

I wouldn't say I've perfected it either. But I'm humbled by your comment. The man himself can afford to make mistakes and it's a good thing to see people at that level make mistakes because we can see how they handle it and it also validates themselves to show that they actually are human. Thanks for the comment

Hey thanks for the comment. When Victor Wooten plays tune he uses his tenor bass which is tuned A D G C. You can play this on a normal tuned bass but because it's lower, alot of the notes will be muddied out thus creating a low end mess. So I had my bass restrung like a tenor bass but tuned it half a step down to give a different sound and feeling to the song. So have a go and tell me how you got on. Cheers

You can make any 4 string a tenor bass. It doesn't have to be made specifically. The only difference your doing is putting different gauge strings on it that accommodate that tuning. To make tapping easier it depends on the strength of your fingers and the setup on your bass.
@BassWithBenjamin
@BassWithBenjamin 16 жыл бұрын
I used light guage strings. Well I used the A string and put it where the E was put the D where the A was etc.

Hey man. The song is in 3/4 and the reason why I hold it a bit is because i'm puttin in some rubato. I do this so the audience can get a good listen to each note and it also pulls them perfectly into the next phrase, I don't like the idea of just playing straight off to get it over and done with, I like to put some emotion into it and also let the audience listen to the sound of the bass otherwise they just won't understand it.

That sounded great. I'm glad you didn't just clone Wooten's version. You did your own thing. It makes me laugh at some of the comments such as yours sounds echoey etc. When they fail to realize Wooten has the sound engineers and equipment to give him that crisp sound. Good job.

Oh nah don't worry man its all good. I started learning this version from that DVD 4 years ago just as a little side thing to explore as I am a Jazz Bassist really. So at some stage I was determand to perform this infront of an audience. So what you saw is the best that I ever played it and the 1st and last time I played it. I would an arrangement if I wanted to but I don't really venture into that solo bass stuff really. That performance was done about 2 years ago and I've moved from then. Ben
