"Partant pour la Syrie" (Departing for Syria) is a French song, the music of which was written by Hortense de Beauharnais and the text by Alexandre de Laborde in or about 1807.
The song was inspired by Napoleon's Egypt campaign. It represents a chivalric composition of the aspirations of a crusader knight in a style typical for the First French Empire. Hortense indicated in her Memoires that she wrote the music when she lived at Malmaison. During its popularity in the nineteenth century the song was arranged for numerous instruments by various composers.
The poem by Labarde was originally titled Le beau Dunois telling the story of the handsome crusader Dunois. Prior to his departure to Syria he prays to the Virgin Mary that he will love the most beautiful woman and that he himself may be the bravest. His prayers are answered. On his return the brave warrior wins the hand of Isabelle. Love and honor prevail.

Phalangist Legion Not quite. Napoleon III did not actively take part in the military operations of Sedan, he left that to Mac Mahon. Solferino is different in that the monarchs from all sides present at the time actually directly commanded their troops during battle, something that has never occurred again in warfare.

Fun Fact: Napoleon's step daughter (Hortense de Beauharnais) composed this song for Napoleon's army. Years later, during Hortense's son rule as Emperor (Napoleon III), this song become the unofficial national anthem.

I had no idea that Hortense de Beauharnais wrote this. It makes sense why Napoleon III would choose this as the anthem of the restored empire as it's both a reminder of the glory of Napoleon and the first empire and was written by his mother. I live in Owen Sound Ontario Canada and there's a small town called Eugenia that's named after Napoleon III wife, so is its waterfall. There's also a Napoleon street there. Vive l’empereur! Vive l'France!

Translation: Leaving for Syria, The young and handsome Dunois, Went to ask the Virgin Mary To bless his holy deeds. "Make it so, immortal Queen," He said upon leaving: "That I love the most beautiful [woman] And be the bravest." He wrote upon a stone, His oath of honor. And went to war, following The Count, his lord. Faithful to his noble vow, He cried out, while fighting: "Love be to the most beautiful, Honor to the bravest!" "My son, we owe you victory, For me," said his lord. "Since you have established my glory, I will reward you with happiness. My daughter, Isabelle, Will instantly be your wife, For she is the most beautiful, And you are the bravest." At the altar of Mary, They pledged themselves to each other, This dear union, Which only brings happiness. Everyone in the chapel, Said upon seeing them: "Love be to the most beautiful, Honor to the bravest."

The revolution very much was about the monarchy though First off the 7 years' war and the intervention in the american independence war which ruined France and all the while they were still heavily taxing the peasants with a shit ton of taxes (capitation, gabelle, taille and so on...) the nobles and clergy were grooving ruining the state even more. And even after the king tried to raise yet another tax on the peasants and the third estate rebelled and turned France into a constitutional monarchy, French people were still on board the monarchy train and screamed "Vive le roi" at the top of their lungs. Louis XVI was incompetent and indecisive and wanted a return to the old monarchy. He tried to stomp the revolution several times, by encircling Paris, by trying to flee to Versailles and then to Austria etc...Only after he made several kingdoms gang up on France and his anti-revolution views were revealed was he finally trialed for high treason but it took a long long while to make the people want to kill the king. So the Revolution was about the king and all the stages of the revolution from 1789 to 1792 were in some way started by the monarchy

Napoleon III was a fraud. Only the true Napoleon is Napoleon I. No France for me but that one of Napoleon I ♡

Napoleon III reputation suffered a lot from third Republic propaganda, but he is arguably the greatest administrative and diplomatic ruler in the history of France.

Napoleon III will always be controversial to some extent (partially due to his infamous Mexico campaign and the Franco-Prussian War), but he is literally the reason France is a modern industrial state with good schools and workers rights. Heck, he had Queen Victoria as his guest of honor. A BRITISH monarch.

Napoleon I may have brought eternal glory to France but on the pragmatic front his wars destroyed the country, this allowed Great Britain and Germany to take its place. Without all the waste of life France could have had a much larger population which would have allowed it to stay the dominant power in Europe. France only has half the population per square meter than that of Germany and one quarter that of Great Britain. Imagine if France had something like 150 Millions inhabitants? It would be the third largest power in the world probably. Before the Napoleonic wars France was a demographic giant. After that the country lost all its population edge.
