Going through some words that sound the same but have different TONES. Hope this helps!
Explanation of the U sound.
The difference between Y and I.
And as promised, some spesial words for some of you! (sorry it was late).
I know this may not be hard for all of you, but it is for some! Hey all Norwegian learners!
The language I'm teaching is not Bokmål nor Nynorsk. It's an east dialect and I don't think you will have much problem with bokmål after this. :) And everyone will understand this.
I am Norwegian, from Norway. Born and raised. I live in Oslo, with my husband and son.

I started filming with my webcam. Then i moved on to a Flip, then a Flip Mino HD. Then followed my iPhone, and Now I have a Panasonic HC-V210 :)

The best way I´ve ever found of having the tones explained in practice! Thank you so much for this and, though I will keep finding tones as (suprasegmental) phonemes not for me, it was so refreshing to really notice the difference between (at least) two linguistic tones for the first time ever, lol!

Thank you for taking the time to post this video. I'm learning from a book right now, and it seems that the author never takes the time to explain the whole tone thing properly, even with the accompanying CDs. I think this video has really helped my understanding of how tones work in much the same way that the rest of the videos in this series have helped me. Please keep up the good work!

You are doing a great job there, your explanations are really useful. Kinda had to smile at the "light and "braid"". "Broad" is "breit" in german and is pronounced nearly the way you accendantly did it.

1-syllable words have tone 1, and 2-syllable words tone 2 (and when you add the article to the word, the tone is kept). Tone1 is falling in W. Norway, and raising in SE Norway/Oslo; Tone2 is raising+falling in W. Norway (raising in the stressed syllable, and falling in the next one), while it is falling-raising in SE Norway/Oslo) [falling in the stressed syllable, and raising in the next, the unstressed syllable]...bil: bìlen in Bergen, bílen is Oslo; kvinne: kvínnèn in Bergen, kvìnnén in Oslo.

Difficult at first to notice it, but it's basically the tone for one word going high to low and the other low to high. At least that's what I got from it as well as learning new words and phrases :D

And were you born there and grew up there or did you move?

hi kairn =) thanks xD..i got it almost inmediatly because spanish has the same problem xD for example the words "como" and "como"..one is used fot "it" and another is used foe compare somehint. Ex: "Ella es COMO tú" (she is like you) "Yo COMO una manzana" (i eat an apple) But this has no "tune" it depends of the concept of the sentence. Thank you karin =)

Thank You for norsk-lesson!

Actually, I think I might have noticed a trend. It seems like when a word is a verb, it has a different tonal inflection than when the word is a noun or object. Although Aandan would still be the odd one out, regardless.

Hmm... For pitch, it seems that with suffixes, the side (stem/suffix) owning the 'e' gets the high pitch; that is, a suffix of -en owns the 'e' but a suffix of -n doesn't. Except the plural of bonde (bønder), which gave the high pitch to the suffix (maybe the stem lost it because of the vowel shift?). Also, this seems to apply even when there isn't a suffix as in være.

Despite learning Norwegian for a number of years, I've always ignored the different tones. Would you say that, as a rule, verbs have a falling tone and nouns have a rising tone? If so that would be pretty easy to remember.

Karin, the tones are not all that difficult to explain. People need to remember almost all Norwegian words bear stress on the first syllable, and that it is that syllable that determines the tone. For tone 1 words (like hender = hands), the first (stressed) syllable starts low. For tone 2 words (hender = happens), the first syllable starts high. Now, the tendency for Norwegian words is to end on a high tone, so tone 1 simply goes up, whereas tone 2 has a sort of dip in the middle. Not too hard.

Hi. I don't know if you've been asked this before, but there is an NHL player with what appears to be a Norwegian last name. His name is Dustin Byfuglien. Thanks.

as for me, it isn't so hard. Every language has this type of rule. Just follow the context people speak. and what about tones, it needs to live in a country you learn language and in time everybody acquires accent and right pronunciation. P.S I know it from my experience.
