Finally, after many hints to this video, he's one of the winch in action. And if you can't stand my complaining about log quality, I've got a rant about that too! Thanks for watching!

Jeff that winch is pretty slick works nicely. Hopefully you will get better quality logs going forward take care brother.

The rest of the logs I buy from him are much better quality, spruce here is more of a waste product, he normally sells it for biofuel, I’m happy with more than 1/2 of the logs, but in the future, I’ll look at them before I pay a truck to haul them. Thanks for watching! Jeff

A capstan winch... interesting setup. Yes, a valve to stop the winch would be helpful. Thanks for sharing.

It’s works fine, it spins all the time the engine is running... I can see a valve in my future! Thanks for watching!

Nice operation! I'm going to purchase the winch, looks like a great tool.

It certainly makes hauling wood less like work and more like fun! Thanks for watching! All the best, Jeff

Hello there Jeff!!! The winch works pretty good except for the wrapping issue eh!!! I guess it needs to be started and stopped from the back of the tractor. You'll have to come up with that solution!!! LOL Like the guy says, for every solution there is a problem!!! Thanks for sharing and take care!!

It’s likely more operational inexperience! I’ll get better with it the more I use it. :) thanks again for watching Mike!

Hi I used capstan winch’s from when I was a kid as a commercial fisherman and then as an adult I started farming and logging and made a capstan for my tractor because it’s what I knew I would suggest when you need to pull off the top of the pile like that to feed the rope under the front roller before wrapping it around the capstan that may keep it from tangling around the capstan
@thelogfather50023 жыл бұрын
I tried that, it definitely works better, but if the rope does ball up in a mess, It's a bit bigger pain to undo it. The trick so far is to keep the tail up higher than the live end of the rope. I'm getting the hang of it, not as much of a rooky as I was in the video, thanks for watching! Jeff

Hi Jeff, I'm new to your channel and really enjoying it. Last year I purchased a new Norwood HD36V2 and am looking into the capstan winch they sell for pulling logs on my property. Are you still using it and would you recommend it ?. I live in Pacific Northwest Washington state and mostly am running Doug Fir up to 30"butts. any insight is appreciated. Thanks, Craig

Nice setup! I use s 10k lbs electric winch but it is slow. I like the Norwood winch.
@thelogfather50023 жыл бұрын
But your winch has way more power than this one I bet! Thanks for watching. All the best, Jeff.

Thanks for the video. I am thinking of buying one for skidding firewood logs to the road. Does the weight and speed of the winch vary with the size of the tractor hydraulics?
@thelogfather50023 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching. I can only assume that the bigger the tractor and hydraulics, the more weight you could handle. My little John Deere seems to be a great balance of power to weight. It’ll haul 3000 pounds on level ground. It has the same power idling or at higher rpm. Thanks again, all the best, Jeff.

IMHO maybe add a fairlead/eye (in the shape of a donut, not oval like a typical 4x4 one, about a foot in front of the capstan roller. Maybe made from 3/4" round bar). That way the capstan roller is only ever seeing rope from one angle, and the smooth fairlead is taking all the angle. Now that I edited it to say "fairlead/eye", makes me think maybe could use a large eye bolt as the fairlead. *dunno if I explained it right or not

Not quite sure I get what you’re saying, I’ve got it figured out now. It was mainly a learning curve on my end.

Too many wraps, I've been heisting lobster crates up with these winches all my life....Wrap the winch once and pull, if you have to pull hard wrap it again...Don't wrap it 3 times on a light load, you have to adjust to the strain that you need, plus angling your three point hitch adjacent to the load might help a bit too...I just bought one, been checking out videos of them

Many thanks! I’ll remember the tip!

We have this winch, the Tractor has to be higher than the log, the rope must ride on the roller, dangerous when the rope binds up, I would recommend a shut off valve close in case it would grab something 🚜🇺🇸👍🏼🪵
@thelogfather50022 жыл бұрын
I used it for pulling logs off my log pile for milling before I got my trailer with a grapple- it sure likes the rope to feed over itself. I can switch it off in a hurry, but I’d have to have a bypassing valve to shut the winch off or the tractor will stall on it’s own hydraulic pressure. Thanks fro stopping by! I enjoy your videos as well! Cheers, Jeff

@@thelogfather5002 the tractor should have a pressure relief valve that will open up if you deadhead the hydraulic remotes.

The 16 footers I do, but anything shorter is a waste of timber.

What is the diameter of the rope ? What is the diameter of the drum where the rope wraps around ? Is the drum made of aluminum or steel? thanks

It’s a 5/8” rope and a 4” stainless spool. Thanks for watching! Jeff

@@thelogfather5002 Thanks Jeff! I'm considering making my own capstan winch. 2 reasons: one is that I already have a log skid I made out of a 3 point bale fork that has worked out very well so far, so I don't need to replace it, and just want to add the winch as a removable accessory. The other reason is that I have a couple different engineer friends who have looked at the Norwood design and both pointed out a design issue. They call it "overhung load" . Mounting the drum directly on the hyd motor in this situation puts excess stress on the motor bearings. The torque is not the issue, but the load is, and also the drum being longer than the shaft, if that makes sense. That being said tho, I haven't run across anyone who has had one fail yet so it must be more of a longevity issue.
