Why do you think people are drawn to new "nostalgia consoles"? And what are you essential PC Engine games? I'd love to hear them!

Nostalgia mostly, I'm not sure anyone I know who's picked up something similar used it for more than a few days, people who actually want to play these old games properly and don't want to use an emulator are quite rare I suspect.

Pat, what is your view on the Evercade? It's a UK handheld that takes cartridges made by Blaze Entertainment. There is a cult like following for it as well, whose followers won't accept that there are any faults with the system, even though there are numerous reported issues with it. They've recently signed a deal with Tommy T to bring Amico games to it such as Frog Bog 😂

I mean it's the same reason why I buy the classic or mini consoles. Because I think they look cool. If they have the games to back them up, that makes it even better for me. So far I haven't had a bad purchase yet. Mainly because I look to see what I can do with a console first.

Nostalgia is a powerful thing and it has become a money train. Since the real moneymaking brands (Nintendo, Sega, etc) are accounted for, people latch on to older pre-NES brands. There is also a generation of people who are desperate to prove that the pre-NES brands have "just as much or more value" than Nintendo and Sega. They're kind of like gaming hipsters. Part contrarian and part "I was there first"

Super Castlevanias soundtrack was legendary. It was the first time I had ever heard game music that seemed to have identifiable “genres”. It and F-Zero were the first games I ever played that had definable instrument parts that I could recognize. F-zero, for instance, has hammer-on and pull offs for its baselines. Maybe even slides. That was mind blowing when it was new.

I remember the day that “Great Grape Ape” was WPIX’s “Character of the Day,” which was what you had to do, in order to play “PIX,” which was controlling modded Intellivision games-basketball was best-by saying “PIX.” I also remember when Rosanna Rosannadanna was the Character of the Day, and my Gram-whose house I went to, after school, until one of my parents picked me up, on their way home from work-didn’t know who the hell she was, either. My Dad, on the other hand, laughed his ass off, that WPIX used Gilda Radner’s _SNL_ character, as a password during the after-school cartoons block, on the infamous, independent channel, out of NYC, which was shown in various places around the lower Northeast... I have good memory.

Silverhawks, for the uninitiated, was brought to us by the people who gave us Thundercats, and essentially was Thundercats, except the heroes were alien cyborg bird-like humanoids instead of cats. And their archnemesis was essentially Mumm-ra if he were an evil Thundercat, and even had the same voice as Mumm-ra. So if you liked Thundercats, but wished there was an evil one who acted like Mumm-ra, and the heroes were birds instead of cats, and it all took place in space instead of mostly on Earth, you would dig the show.

Ditto on getting a 360 for just 1 game. For me it was Rez HD, but then I "burned out" for a while after binging on 360 games. Got back into games when Game Pass came out, plus for some new NES games. I'd love to see stuff like the VCS and Amico succeed, but realistically I see the odds against them among other factors. I don't see anything wrong with mild Nostalgium poisoning, but it's easy to overdo it and end up letting run your life or worse.

NBA Jam 99 and 2000 had a Jam mode and a Sim mode. The Jam modes were still 2 on 2 but I was never much of a fan of the Jam modes on those games. I loved the Sim 5 on 5 modes on those games as a kid but now that I’m older and constantly playing old sports games there were better options for even 5 on 5 basketball games. The NBA Jam on PS2 was 3 on 3 and so were the Street games. Personally I loved Jam, Hangtime, and Showtime but they are all different and I don’t know if I can really call one of the better than another, personally. There was also an NBA Hoopz in the same style that was released after Showtime but I never played that one.

Vice: Project doom really impressed me. I probably would have never discovered it if not for the switch. If anyone else has beaten that game and also astral chain, the plots are really similar, right? Or is it just me? I tried to see if any of the developers worked on both games. But maybe someone at platinum is a fan. Even some of the game design was similar on a very high level.

My favorite Hanna-Barbera cartoons were Speed Buggy & The CB Bears. You don’t know how big CB radios became in the late ‘70s...they were such a huge part of American culture...I remember getting the “10-calls” & their corresponding meanings from the back of a box of cereal. And my siblings & I were able to use them in my Dad’s 1979 Oldsmobile Regency Diesel luxury sedan...that included from the factory a Delco radio w/CB. We all had handles and we talked to truckers/anyone with a CB radio while going on trips...just too fun/funny. Obviously...the most asked question was if there were any “Smokey Bears” spotted. I didn’t see The Banana Splits & all the Sid & Marty crazy shows...missed them by some years...except for Land Of The Lost. I hated that show...it meant Saturday morning cartoons were over...and it was the dumbest/most boring show ever made. I also hated M.A.S.H.(especially the intro-song) because it meant...bedtime. For Hanna-Barbera...I should also say The Super Friends...and Godzilla + Godzooky cartoons. Nobody knew about any X-Men characters...it was Superman, Batman & Robin, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, and The Wonder Twins*. *When are The Wonder Twins going to get their “dark”(always has to be brooding/super serious/super dark now...for DC characters) feature film? Joking...ahhhh half-joking.

To answer some of the questions brought up. 1. Underrated great cartoon Freakazoid. Just as funny as the Animaniacs, Pinky and the Brain, and Tiny Toons. 2. The best video game soundtrack to listen to is Streets of Rage 2. That soundtrack holds up to this day. 3. People love nostalgic consoles because of the idea of reliving the fun they had as a child. People are exciited for the amico & VCS because lots of retro gamers feel modern games are too complicated they want a simplier time in gaming when they could play like legends. Some, not all don't want to adjust to modern gaming.

That wasn't an FPS - that was a maze similar to a dungeon crawler.

... You realize that’s what Pat was talking about, right? The official name of the game is Top Secret Episode, featuring Golgo 13.

@@JazGalaxy never knew that. I think I played it just a couple of times at my buddies house (who was also a damn Kevin...though his name is actually Brett). So, my knowledge is limited but I remember walking left and right and then snipers got some things. Though, what about that SWAT. Embassy Mission game? Does that count?

Everytime when Ian says „sure“ i never know if he agrees with Pat or just understands his opinion. As a non-native speaker of english, i often struggle with the word sure.

I don’t think it’s really either. “Sure” in that context tends to mean “go on...” or “continue”. It’s not the word that matters in that context. It’s more the tone of voice which communicates agreeableness. “Please continue”.

How do you talk about sound tracks and not mention Tempest 2000 or ALL of the Megaman's? The Megaman level music is right up there with fucking Ducktales.
