Doug, what the hell?
The Nostalgia Critic, also known as Doug Walker, recently made a video "reviewing" Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl. Why say that in quotations? Because his "review" is one of the worst pieces of garbage I have seen on this platform. Stay tuned, because I will also be responding to his Dead Man's Chest review, and his At World's End review.

You know, i feel like there are a lot of more things to criticize the NC than this video. But there's something inherently funny about you complaining about what people think is boring is subjective and going "not funny didn't laugh" for the rest of the video. Also, you really didn't know that the random black screens were so that the KZfaq ads didn't interrupt the video? I know Doug is incopetent in certain areas but even Red Letter Media does that.
@Kira_Official_

I agree with this. Just like beauty, comedy is also subjective. He's allowed to not find something funny, but I find it odd how he sees Doug make a joke, and assumes that's him making a point of criticism. Sometimes it's just him making a joke and nothing else. I'm not gonna pretend Doug makes the best videos or all of his criticism is valid or correct. Because he has been wrong on multiple occasions. *Cough Guardians Of The Galaxy 3 Cough* Also, yes, the black screens are for injected ad brakes. Idk how this guy didn't know what they were for.

12:35 The cursed pirates can feel things. They primarily feel pain. They can't die from the pain and the injuries they sustained, but they can still feel them, even if it's just briefly. As established by Barbossa, he, along with his crew, feels nothing. But he was mainly referring to positive feelings, like the wind on his face, the splash of the sea, or the warmth of a woman's flesh. Plus, a possible argument is based on a reactionary type of pain. That they can remember what pain feels like, as pain is easier to remember, as once you get hurt by something, you will remember the pain. But the feeling of pleasure only last so long.

That doesn't make any sense either, because when Pintel is shot, and Barbossa is stabbed and shot, they show no reaction. It's just inconsistency.
@OmnicidalClown1992
@OmnicidalClown1992 3 ай бұрын
@jacksondavies3595 It makes more sense compared to the scene where Elizabeth was planning to drop the amulet into the ocean. For context, when Barbossa and his pirates weren't accepting Elizabeth's deals, she threatened to drop the amulet so that they couldn't get their hands on it. Barbossa tried to call her bluff, but when she almost dropped it, the pirates flinched. The problem with this scene is what happens later on. As it was established, the crew of the Black Pearl were cursed and couldn't die. This includes their inability to drown. So, even if Elizabeth did drop the amulet, all Barbossa has to do is send his men into the ocean and search for it. The amulet wouldn't go that far, and they could've found the amulet within a few hours, if not a few days.
@NotMe6044
@NotMe6044 29 күн бұрын
This exactly. Also them not feeling anything is information we get solely from Barbosa, the mutineer clearly doing a bit for intimidation purposes. I feel like the audience is supposed to go "he was bending the truth" not "the movie's got a flaw there"
@OmnicidalClown1992
@OmnicidalClown1992 29 күн бұрын
@jacksondavies3595 Also, I just realized that all the injuries that the Pirates didn't react to were one that were fatal. Every other time when Barbossa and his crew react in pain from their injuries is because they were survivable. This includes to when they get shot. When Pintel and Barbossa got shot in the heart, they barely reacted, as it would've killed them if they weren't immortal. But when they sustained an injury that was survivable, they would react in pain.

Thank you for defending Will’s character! I have heard from a few people how boring will and Elizabeth are and I whole heartedly disagree. I love Will and it’s fun to see this dorky character who is out of his element without being played over the top. Orlando bloom is very charming and has this down to earth energy, so when he’s thrown in these over the top scenarios I actually find it to be very hilarious and relatable. I feel like casting someone like Tom Holland it wouldn’t be the same kind of funny. Also they were building up Elizabeth’s character form the beginning from this damsel in distress to someone who took charge of the situation. These two need more love lol Also I loved At World’s End! I don’t care what anyone thinks- I love the dark turn this franchise took. With that said (and I’m sorry for the long essay), I do think you are being a little harsh on Doug. He has stated in many of his personal videos that he is only sharing his perspective and has encouraged people to watch these movies and make their own opinion. As much as I am a fan of NC, he has ripped apart some of my favourite films (aka moulin rouge). However, he has made some good analysis- he defended films that needed defending and criticized films that needed criticism. So I don’t think it’s very fair to call him a “moron” or get angry at him for having an opinion. Also as you mentioned, art is subjective, well so is humour. I don’t laugh at all his jokes and personally I do prefer his older content, but there were a couple moments I chuckled when you put “not funny”. I thought some of it was funny. You gotta remember NC is a character, and he is a KZfaqr like yourself who is trying to make a living. I do like this review and you make some solid points but it would be nice if you could tone down the anger a bit. 😊

Yeah, this seems a bit way too harsh on Doug's review. Ironically, as I felt Doug was a bit too harsh with these films, so too was this review too harsh on Doug. Nothing's above criticism, but it's possible to go too far into needless critique and picking apart anything that even seems remotely wrong, no matter how tiny or subjective it is.

While I think Barbossa's line "I feel cold" is fantastic and incredibly poignant (BTW great job explaining why the line works so well!), I can understand what Doug means by thinking the dialogue he thought he heard was better than what was actually said. When I was a child watching At World's End, when Will stabs Davy Jones in the chest, I thought Jones said "Missed" as in Will missed the mark of killing Jones so incredibly hard he wasn't even close. But I only found out a couple years ago that what Jones actually said was "Mister..." and then he proceeds to ask if Will forgot he was heartless. It kind of upsets me a little bit because as a kid, I thought the idea of Jones getting stabbed in the chest and then cheekily saying "Missed" just gave him another level of sass and felt very in-character for Jones. So I can understand where Doug is coming from in this situation, but I think the actual line Barbossa says before he dies works way better.

I thought it was obvious that Jack saying "It would never have worked between us, darling" to Elizabeth was a joke that stemmed from him having a "crush" on her because she's a pretty girl. He never seemed like someone who was ever interested in any actual romantic relationship, not even with her. So, it's weird for NC to count that as a "tease" when it doesn't seem like one.

That’s still entirely subjective, and thus has no place in a discussion of objective flaws, which criticism falls under. Yes the goal of a film is to entertain, but being entertaining cannot be quantified at all, so it should not be uttered in the same review where he’s trying (and failing) to bring up flaws in a piece of media.

@@TheSEAempire I get what you mean but criticism (in the artistic field) isnt about objectivity but rather about using objectivity to explain your own subjective judgement of whether or not you think a movie is good or bad. If you find a movie boring then there's a clear disconnect and that can be perceived as a flaw by someone but there's also the fact that someone else might see something else in it and enjoy the film. The point of criticism is to use analysis to explain your personal point of view, not about "finding objective flaws" because theres no such thing.

Great video! I agree with your points,but there are a few flaws in the video imo. First of all, I think you took it a bit too personally, nostalgia critic is mainly playing a "Daffy duck like character" who's focused on making jokes reather than actual critique. This does NOT mean he's immune to all criticism,but the problem is that some people take his reviews seriously regardless,be they fans or haters. You seem to be reather angered by his reviews and that can cause some problems, you're reather condescending and (i feel like I used this words a million times already) angry. Considering that you accused NC's reviews of spreading misinformation and you want to correct the mistakes he made in them acting like this isn't ideal as it gives people the impression that you're taking these too seriously, hating him just because he doesn't share the same opinion,or,if they see NC as a legitimate critic,they might find the video too condescending to see the well made points. There are also a few unnecessary parts. The "not funny didn't laugh" bit was done too much,imo. You've said quite a few times that you didn't find NC funny, that's perfectly fine,but saying that every time he makes a joke is really unnecessary, humour is subjective,so saying that you don't find him funny doesn't really add anything to the video and could've been cut out. As for a way to fix this, I'd recommend being a bit nicer and respectful (as hard as it may be) and not calling NC unfunny every time a joke is made. Sorry if this was a long comment btw 😅

Oh I know Doug plays a character in his videos, and I can see how well he translates his inspirations of Daffy Duck and the Queen of Hearts into his persona. And while I can accept that he is playing a character in order to present his arguments in an entertaining fashion, we also have to admit that his points are still very poorly crafted. His other review shows where he is out of character have him bringing up similar points to other films. Hell, he even made a Disneycember video way back, and even in that he used the same criticisms here. So in this case, we know how he *actually* feels about them, and as such, it should be discussed since he is absolutely spreading misinformation. I caught him multiple times outright editing a scene to remove context, which is deciet either way you spin it. Is he doing it for the sake of comedy? Yes. Will people treat it as such? Most likely not. I have seen people parrot his points through the years, even if they are illogical or outright false. We can’t just defend these kinds of KZfaqrs with the same excuse of “parody” or “opinions”, because now we have an internet film discussion culture that is riddled with CinemaSins criticisms, Patrick Willems criticisms, Cosmonaut Variety Hour criticisms, and RedLetterMedia criticisms. Not to say that people aren’t allowed to enjoy their content, but if they have poor arguments then we shouldn’t ignore that. A spade is a spade. And yeah, it is fair that you didn’t like my jokes. It is a bit of an inside joke my friends and I use all the time but I don’t expect that everybody would take a liking to it. At the very least though it was an additive for my video, not the substance itself. All that being said, I really appreciate the constructive criticisms, and I will make it more clear in the next video that I mean no ill will towards Doug or his channel. In retrospect I should have done that here, but the flow of the video worked better in my eyes with the intro I made, though I can see how others would disagree 👍

While I would agree with this, it’s something that is an inconsistency within the narrative. If this boat can be held underwater, how can ships float? Now, admittedly it’s an extremely small flaw that is basically a nitpick, and I wouldn’t even bother bringing it up in conversation about the film otherwise, but I pointed it out in this video since it’s technically a valid flaw but Doug brushed it off, while he made up fake flaws and claimed they were true.

I love your videos and Doug’s… Parlay? Seriously though, I feel like he’s been pretty harsh on these films. Most of the time I enjoy his takes, and I can agree to disagree. The Pirates films are my Star Wars, and honestly they’re much more enjoyable than Star Wars 😅. The fifth movie I feel like misunderstands the characters, especially after everything Jack and Barbosa had gone through, and they remove so much of the mystique of Jack’s character and turn Barbosa into “Argh, Me Treasure!” But 1-4 are great. I watch On Stranger Tides more than the original trilogy even, it’s a nice self sufficient adventure with incredible set pieces and character work.

I've been a fan since 2013, Yes he helped create the Movie Hate KZfaq Trend. I watch him with a pinch of objective salt, I rarely agree with him, and sometimes he makes a follow up review where he expresses his actual views on a film, he does try to distinguish the difference between Doug Walker and Doug The Nostalgia Critic. . He has openly admitted that his Nostalgia Critic Reviews are often full of hyperbole and opinions are over inflated and intended to fit the narrative of The Nostalgia Critic. Basically he exaggerates his criticisms and is nitpicky to be "comedic". . I definitely disagree with his reviews of the first three POTC films. I'm with the minority opinion of having At Worlds End as my favorite Pirate's film. . I love mythology and lore, I love it when a film series goes dark and attempts to grow the franchise. I can't believe just how dark and violent A.W.E. is, it is the closest that Disney (Under the Brand) has ever gotten towards an R-Rated film. . Disney has never made anything that is so graphic in its violence, themes and overall design of the film. From the dirt and grime on the Pirates to the awesome, impressive and gooey effects and designs for the crew of The Flying Dutchman and Davey Jones, the aesthetics of the film are beautiful in all of its GORE Verbinski madness. . The sequels are closely approaching their 20th anniversaries and every frame of the films hold up so well, they could be released today. Davey Jones's design alone is comparable to any CGI character in any movie that's been released in the past decade. Well maybe not against Avatar 2, but he looks as good as Thanos, Caesar in the Planet of the Apes Trilogy, and miles better than She-Hulk, Thanos's henchmen or Darkseid and Steppenwolf (Josstice League or Znyder Cut). . Stranger Tides and Dead Men Tell No Tales (to a lesser extent) lost their artistic creativity that Gore brought to the franchise. They at least tired to bring back creative effects for the latter film, but the original trilogy feels more tangible, substantial and consistent. . I like Doug and The Nostalgia Critic for who they are, understanding that he's reaching for criticisms from a perspective of making jokes. But I much more enjoy the episodes where he just talks about something that he likes and appreciates, i feel like those episodes are more honest and authentic, but because of the algorithm, his positive review episodes get less engagement.

I am very indifferent to Doug and his work. On one hand there are many things that he has said in the past about films that are true and make a whole lot of sense, and back in his hay day I used to really like his work. But after like 2019 I started to really hate him. I just reached 18 at the time and I really started to resent a lot of the ignorant and idiotic things he said about a lot of films I hold dear. Like sometimes he would state things that were flat-out wrong if you pay attention for like five seconds or could be debunked by using the little device in your head called your brain. I hold some sort of nostalgic feeling for his work because I watched it while growing up but at the same time, his work has gone from being funny and sometimes providing good criticism to just boring, unfunny, and VERY poorly researched. Doug says he thinks a critic should be entertaining and funny and offer an interesting point of view. But Doug ONLY ever goes for being funny and he fails at that. Every now and then he will bring up a good point but they are very few and far between. I am very indifferent about his work now because I hold some enjoyment when I watch his reviews but at the same time all these problems start arising whenever he mentions something that is flat-out wrong. It is so infuriating when he does things like that. These pirates of the Caribbean videos that I watched were fine, at the absolute most and HORRIBLE at the absolute worst. Some things he says are true, like Barbosa having a serious hatred towards Jack and some other certain things but damn this video did piss me off when I watched it for the first time. It really annoyed me. I think after these reviews I am done watching new videos by him. I think I will either stop watching his videos altogether or just watch old videos of him. Oh and sorry I barely talked about your video itself XD. I guess I just had a lot of irritation to get off my chance and this was a good way to get it out there. This video you made is very good and very truthful. More truthful than any of Doug's videos anyway. Also, it is funny to me that you are far more truthful than Doug despite LITERALLY HAVING LESS SUBSCRIBERS. Very odd to say the least. Anyway, good video and I can't wait for part 2. :) Also sorry long as shit comment. :)

Something that I've never understood is why critics say the fourth and fifth films are convoluted. Sure, Dead Man's Chest and At World's End were a bit layered, but how can those be convoluted when they got more simple? I'm beginning to think they didn't even try to focus and just blame the movies for it. That would be an explanation for Doug's lack of understanding of the whole franchise.

And 2, he also at least to me, represent us viewers in a way that we also much like will dont know the world of pirates, their norms or rules or how they act. So yeah will could be eyecandy if you see the movie as an older aurdiens or dont care much for the story, okay.
